Your kids aren't blonde haired, blue eyed, very skinny, and rich they will be brutally bullied and if your family doesn't have money the school will do nothing about it and brush it off. Lunches are free, but if your kid is in middle or high school and dares eat the main dish instead of getting a salad they will be looked down upon by their peers. There's a huge eating disorder culture here - the school store doesn't sell uniforms above an adult medium. If your family happens not to be white or white passing, you will be outcast and treated different. If you don't have a boatload of money and are on scholarship - you will be treated differently. Report any bullying or abuse from other students and they will sweep it under the rug to save face. The religion portion of the education is also extremely dated and extreme - very conservative - in 8th grade your child will watch every 70s abstinence video on the planet and be compared to a wrapped present. They have a pro-life club that actively campaigns at lunch to k-12 students. Class trips start happening in middle school and cost anywhere from $2000-20,000 and are anywhere from Chicago to China. Don't get me wrong, the education is spectacular and your student will be 2-3 grade levels ahead of public school students but if you don't fit the mold their mental health will suffer. The harsh reality is that there is a specific look and cadence to the type of student that fits in and is most welcomed here.

We have been sending our toddler to this center for 1.5 years (since she was 4 months) and have been really happy with the center, leadership and it's staff. We've been especially impressed with the communication - between the weekly emails, daily pictures and updates via app, periodic phone calls and in person conversations when warranted. Equally impressive is how they navigated the unprecedented circumstances of COVID-19 - including over communicating, providing flexibility to families and taking nearly every precaution possible early and often to be able to keep center open. Our daughter loves going to daycare everyday, gives us a confident "bye bye!!" before marching into the class ready to start her day. We are amazed at everything she learns and how busy they keep all the kids. Kids are either doing group activities, reading, doing art (many of the times we get a lamenartwork sent home), playing of the playground, napping or eating. Most importantly, we've been so comforted by the quality of staff and the bonds our daughter has developed with them over the years. It's obvious they know and genuinely care about each child. If I could give a 4.5/5, I would. As you would expect with any center, there are small things that aren't always perfect (communications here and there, some teacher turnover and some that aren't as engaged). We love supporting local talent and feel that our money goes to a great cause as every participant in the show is a student (sometimes they do have guests to help fill certain roles or parts). Overall, your money goes to helping students build confidence, community and collaboration at circus. By attending shows or purchasing merchandise, the money gets put back into the circus school. Each year, the theme of the show is different and students weave in and out of the program. Once they are a senior, students move on. My family has been attending for so long that I recognize many of the former talent now being volunteers or riggers on set. I am always amazed at the talent and even more, how it's local and in our own community. Skills range from silks, tumbling, roller skating, trampoline jumps, aerial, acrobatics, juggling and more. Each show typically runs about 3 hours with a 20-minute intermission. There are small vendors onsite that serve the standard hot dogs, chips, sodas, candy bars and even Cold Stone creamery has had a both the past couple years serving up ice cream. Blizzard was a culmination of several Christmas stories using the setting of Santa's Workshop. Christmas play meets Cirque du Soleil. These kids are no joke! In-person classes are taught by instructors who are engaged and passionate about the curriculum. I have not run into "no-call/no-show" situations from teachers. My advice - know what your plan is before you get started. Talk to advisors at your preferred transfer university to find out what they expect you to bring to their school from MCTC. Then get started.
