My wife and I visited this restaurant last week on a Friday at 7:45pm. We were warmly greeted at the door by Pablo, the Manager. We were seated immediately and our server named Kevin came over with water, and offered us a wine list (which we ordered from immediately). Kevin was an outstanding server! We enjoyed Ahi Tostadas, Duck and then a delicious steak filet. We also enjoyed some tawny Port at the end. Everything was delicious. The restaurant was very romantic, dim lighting , nice music and actually there were mostly couples dining there. When we were done we stopped off at the bar on the way out and had a couple of drinks from the Bartender Salvador. He was awesome! Great conversation and the drinks were perfect. This is one of high end restaurants and most decent looking restaurant in Brownsville. I love ambiance where is a dark lighting and located nearby river. They have a great choice of wine and cocktails menu. I had a red wine by glass and had a red snapper. I loved spinach fried. It was nicely fried and not oily at all. The snapper was nicely seasoned and cooked perfectly. It was so good and I ate everything. Finalky found the great restaurant snuggled back un the Business lot, nestled adjacent to the canal. Fantastic presentation of plates, very varied menu from standard fare. Very classy, very clean Argentine-style establishment that we found a bit hard to find but was well worth the effort. (Once you're in the parking lot, drive all the way to the back and you will find the restaurant.) no reservations, but got right in and seated within 30 seconds. Our waiter was one of the best I've ever had, an older gentleman who helped my girlfriend so much throughout the entire night with his many knowledgeable suggestions, and her requests. A really nice place that has potential to be much more than what it is. Madeira has a very stylish atmosphere, where it is pleasant and appealing to the eye. However, I am not quite sure I am completely under an understanding how this place operates. It was a Wednesday night and thinking that it was a weeknight, seating availability would be easy to come by. I walk in, ask for a table for one, and was told that there were no tables available and that I could either sit at the bar or sit out on the patio. I chose the bar. Madeira is more upscale, but I was appropriately dressed with pants and a collared shirt. No jacket or tie is required here, as I checked prior to coming. As I walk around the corner, I noticed that the majority of the tables were not occupied with perhaps, maybe, five tables that were seated and about twenty open tables. One of the tables included a younger gentleman wearing a tee-shirt and I later noticed the manager walking around, also in pants and shirt, so I know for fact I wasn't under-dressed. I don't know. I was confused and so were the staff. I really couldn't get a straight answer out of them when later I asked why I was forced to sit at the bar. The whole reason why I wanted to come was for seafood. The menu has some pretty interesting things that sounded really good. But I started with the ceviche de halibut where the fish is marinated in lime and served with chili habanero on the side. My chilis are never on the side of anything for too long, as I love spicy things, and into the ceviche it went. What an incredible dish. Perhaps some of the best ceviche I've ever had. Next, I tried the Ensalada Con Queso Brie. From the menu, Crispy Brie Cheese, Boston Lettuce, Spinach, Dried Fruits And Honey Mustard Vinaigrette. While the presentation and taste were good, it didn't knock my socks off. For the main entree, I solicited my server, Veronica, for some suggestions and I almost opted for a red snapper dish, where she indicated one of Madeira's Chilean Sea Bass dishes called, Merluz al Azafran, was delicious and recommended giving it a try. For those of you who are not Spanish speaking, Azafran, is what Americans call saffron. The sea bass was perfectly cooked and served over a small bed of sauteed spinach, a few pieces of squash, which were all placed over a saffron cream sauce. Fantastic! A great piece of fish! I flaked off small bites at a time to prolong the pleasure of eating this tasty dish. During my earlier view of the menu, I did look over the steak items and nothing really stood out that I found enticing and Veronica suggested that I come back for a future visit to give one of them a try. I noticed only one prime cut on the menu and it doesn't mention if the cut was subjected to an aging process. I did inquire and a few of the staff asked amongst themselves and a couple didn't even know about what the aging process of select steak cuts were. Hmmmmmmm... Even though I had to sit at the bar, I still had a pretty good dining experience. The staff are very attentive and Veronica was great. A few of them I found to be a little cold and short on information, but still friendly. There is room for improvement. The first being an explanation of why they cannot seat customers when there are available tables. And second, staff not being completely educated about the menu they represent. It does not make my fuzzy warm enough to risk spending the money charged on a cut that really could be severely over-priced. While food can be an art, here at Madeira, I am certain they would want the art to come from the finest ingredients if they intend to uphold a reputation and cater to a particular dining class. read more

I have enjoyed Madeira twice and this is a fantastic restaurant. We had great service, great food and good wine. The ceviche was crisp and fresh. They use halibut, very expensive for ceviche but it is awesome with lots o lime and avocado goodness. Lovely! The snapper and filet were perfectly prepared and delicious. The cream brûlée was simple straightforward lusiousness. Consider some coconut in the brûlée chef? My only criticism is it is HARD to get in touch with this place- it is hard to find and almost impossible to get a phone number (not on yelp and hard to find online). This is like a secret spot? i was pleasantly surprised to find such a nice restaurant in Brownsville. I was a little sad I was the only person there, maybe people in Brownsville eat later than 6pm. I ordered the scallops and they were cooked really well but the flavors were confusing to me. From the menu I assumed the flavors would be latin inspired but the dish turned out to be more asian fusion. personally, the sweet hosin sauce was a little too much with the delicate scallops but the presentation was beautiful. i will come back again to try some other things on the menu, this dish wasnt my favorite but the restaurant itself definitely has promise. This an unusual 5 star review for me but it is all about perspective. For Brownsville, this is a 5 star joint. The menu is diverse (relatively speaking) and everything I have tasted has been well prepared. It is at least my tenth time here. Their Napoleon pastry dessert is the best I've ever tasted. My wife and I celebrated our 48th anniversary here tonight and it was truly an unforgettable experience! Christian, our server, was there any time we needed him without being in the way. We started our meal with a brie and prosciutto appetizer and we each had a salad with brie and bacon, along with greens. She had tenderloin medallions and I had the beef tenderloin. This has to be the best restaurant in Brownsville - the service, the food, the atmosphere makes you think you're no where near the RGV. (Which might be the best aspect of this restaurant). The food is what I'd consider Fusion - everything from European, Latin American, Asian, American. The Good: -Ceviche: both the Madeira and the Halibut are good, but I prefer the scallops. -Tacos: Both the Shrimp and Pork Shank are small little tacos but tasty. -Petites de Longosta: small and again...tasty -Miso/Sake Sea Bass: delicious - if a bit too sweet -ChateauBriand: a fun presentation. Serves 2 The Not-so-bad: -Terrine of Foie Gras: I love foie gras, but I thought this terrine was just ok -Filete Ladrillo: different, with a very spicy sauce. I thought the filet was a bit tough, but my husband liked it. -Filete des Res Madeira: tenderloin was tender but not amazing. The Ugly: Nothing! We've always had great service, but just know that this experience comes with a $$$ price tag. When I requested more chips waiter told me there will be an extra charge added for 6 more chips :-( ridiculous especially for how pricey the appetizer was. You would think that they would like their customers to come back. When this restaurant initially started the appetizer was exquisite. 3 years later the app.. does not have the same texture or flavor. My main dish consisted of seared tuna which was 2 strips instead of the initial 3 I had years ago..on a bed of greens and that plate was $35.00.plus the service was not good. Depending on your taste in food, and tolerance for spending $50+ per person on dinner, you'll either love or hate Madeira. I wasn't particularly impressed with the scallop dish I tried. The scallops themselves were phenomenal, but the soy sauce they were covered in overpowered the subtle buttery flavor of the scallops. I don't know about some of the negative reviews being posted on here. I question their taste buds. I love in Houston and being in outside sales I get to experience the most extravagant restaurants in Houston and across the globe. This place definitely knows what they are doing and deserve 5 stars.
