This was our second afternoon tea of the trip. I wanted to do a fun themed one. It is located inside the hotel and staff is friendly. We visited mid April and it was a little chilly weather. The tea is served in the garden area but is enclosed in a tent with heaters. Everyone receives a welcome butterfly pea tea drink. They pour the tea from a teapot that has dry ice in it. Butterfly pea tea changes color with increasing pH, this certainly adds to the whimsical experience. The teas are refillable and you can try different ones. I visited The Sanderson for the Alice and Wonderland Tea while on a mother and daughter trip to London. I'm a member of a "tea club" so I've been to many afternoon teas, but this one is a favorite. The Alice and Wonderland Tea was a unique tea experience. The tea was whimsical and fun. The theme was carried out through every detail from the plates and teacups to the ballerina music box that the sugar cubes were placed in. The food presentation was great. The food itself was delicious and very filling. We were also pleased with the service. The servers were attentive, and kind. We spent around three hours here and never felt rushed. I had pretty high expectations for the Mad Hatter Tea as it was touted as one of London's best themed teas but it was just okay. The theme was shown on the alice in wonderland plates, the cute sugar box but not too much else. I also felt the service was rather lackluster - even the check in was rather cold. We also had to constantly track down our waitress when we needed something - she barely checked on us. I was a little bummed as this tea was a gift for my friend's birthday and they did bring her a nice lighted dessert. The food was good but the scones were depressing and more like biscuits than scones. The tea sandwiches were cutely displayed with colored bread sandwiches, but the taste was just okay. They also had gluten free sandwiches for my friend with no colored bread and she said they were a little bland. The best parts were prolly the desserts which were very creative, fun and tasty. This was so much fun! I looked up themed teas in London when my friend and I had an afternoon to spare before heading back home from Manchester. I booked online with no problems. They were accommodating to food allergies (nuts) and requests (no raisin scones). The food and tea were fantastic! It is all you can eat, so you can come hungry if you really want to. I thoroughly enjoyed this whimsical and delightful London afternoon tea experience. The Sanderson is a peaceful oasis centrally located between Fitzrovia and Soho. The tea area is intimate and wonderfully Alice in Wonderland themed, with a pink Cheshire cat and pink flamingos adorning a verdant fountain area. Absolutely all the plateware and sweet treats are on theme. The experience starts off with a fun, frothing, color changing butterfly pea tea pour. I adored the sugar lump container, which was a sweet and nostalgic ballerina music box. The menu has versions that accommodate virtually any dietary restriction, and I appreciated how endless refills of tea as well as all tea treats served are included in the comparatively reasonable set price (£65, before tax/tip, alcohol extra). The variety of treats was good, with fun items like a mini Boba tea, cotton candy, and a scrumptious savory truffle mushroom-shaped pastry. I'm not usually a fan of savory tea sandwiches, and that remained the case here, but the fact that I could get multiple orders of the treats that I did like at no extra cost more than made up for it. I was determined to experience a high tea during my trip and was able to easily book the night before. This tea is located in the Sanderson hotel restaurant. After staff member I ran into was very helpful and friendly as I was visiting with my toddler. You have the option between set menu and vegetarian. The sandwiches were ok, my favorites were the cucumber and chicken. The salmon was a little thick on the cream and ham wasn't very good. As others have said set your expectations, the Alice in wonderland theme is with the cutlery, decor and some pastries. The staff do not dress up and it is not an immersive experience. When you walk in there is a set of dress up options for kids and a tired looking Cheshire cat. I was seated at a table with space for my buggy and the servers were very kind in offering help. They do have high chairs here if you bring children. My toddler was the youngest there when I went but it does seem kid friendly and was not overly fancy where you worry about a toddler chattering in the corner. The tea was so so. My favorite was the guava mango green tea. The white rabbit white tea was rather plain but the server didn give some good recommendations on what each one would taste like. The pastries were sweating a bit even when they were first brought out. The boba tea was way to sweet, although to be fair is advertised as a syrup. The popping boba was disgusting and I didn't expect it. The heart shaped raspberry pastry was tasty and had a nice crust. I really liked the service for which they tack on 13% service charge fyi. You get to revisit sandwich options so no need to worry about leaving hungry. I forgot to mention the scones with clotted cream and jams were delicious, the scones were kept warm in their napkin blanket and were so flaky and perfect. Overall I don't think this experience is worth the cost but it is a nice spot you can take your kids. I only wish they had more Alice in wonderland things and would'bt have minded getting booted out by the queen of hearts or something. My family and I had a wonderful time a the Mad Hatters Afternoon tea! I will preference this review and say none of us had experienced afternoon tea before, so I can't compare it to what a "normal" afternoon is like but as a stand alone afternoon experience I had a great time. The hotel is slightly off the beaten path and we booked our afternoon tea for during the week on a Thursday, so while we had reservations the restaurant was no where near full. There were 4 or 5 teas to choose from, each based on a different character and it was fun trying all of them. The savory food was absolutely delicious! We ordered more of most of the savory bites. The sweets were also good, although some were a bit rich for my liking. The theming of the tea was amazing! As a huge Alice in Wonderland fan I could not have been happier with the decor and the themed foods. It is very whimsical and not subtle so you will have no doubt you are at an Alice in Wonderland themed tea! The service was okay. This spot in London is located in a unique hotel next to Oxford Circus and I saw many great reviews and decided to take the leap. The courtyard area is beautiful and the decor from the plates to teacups is wonderland themed. The staff were really nice but there seemed to be quite a bit of confusion on the menu and it was hard to get their attention even though it was not busy. Food and tea also took way too long to come out compared to some customers that came when I was getting the bill. It is not worth paying the extra for the rare teas. You end up getting less tea overall and less to choose from. The food was a good amount but apart from the biscuits the deserts and sandwiches were very underwhelming in regards to taste. My bill ended up being over $100 with no champagne. I was really excited to try the Mad Hatters Tea Party but left disappointed. First off, we were not dressed appropriately for this tea experience because we had been walking around Hyde Park all day, but the host was welcoming, explained afternoon tea, and seated us at a nice table. We chose this place because they offered a kid's tea menu, and it was on the way back to our hotel. My husband and I enjoyed the snacks, but honestly, our 5 year American son could have cared less, but he loved the cocoon chair and fountain in the courtyard area. I really wanted to do afternoon tea while in london. I decided to go with mad hatters. Made my reservation before my trip. We arrived a few minutes late due to traffic but got seated when we arrived. It's located in a courtyard inside a hotel. There isn't really any signage. So after we sat down. No one came up to us at all. My friend went up to ask the host what was going on. We didn't know who was suppose to be our server. There was a woman who was around some of the tables near us but we were ignored. There was a server serving another section that did come up to us after noticing we weren't being attended. I'm not sure if the servers get assigned tables in London. Anyway I think this guy tried to help us cause he felt sorry for us. He was trying to manage his section along with coming over to just wait on us. We ordered our teas and got our tea sandwiches. I went with the Alice tea which was a black tea. When our tea sandwiches were brought out, the lady explained what each one was to us which was really nice. Our teas were good. Some of the sandwiches were a hit or miss. Breads were stale. The whole experience was 48 pounds per person. We didn't choose the champagne option. You can have more of whatever you'd like on the menu. We were brought out some scones at the end which were warm. When I got there, the place was beautiful. I especially loved the fact that the menu was inside the pages of an actual book. However, nothing else about the room seemed to be inspired by Alice in Wonderland. When it comes to the food, I had very mixed feelings. First let me talk about the savory menu. The cucumber sandwich was delicious. However, the eggs were not good at all. I found that I either loved or hated the food. Then for sweet, it was soo sweet. Usually I love sugar, but some of this was even too much for me. However, visually they were beautiful. Lastly, the tea. I got the Mad Hatter tea and it was easily the best tea I've ever had. It was a citrus green tea and I could have have endless tea all day. Overall, the ambiance and tea were great, and the food was so fancy but not all of it actually tasted good. If you are a Disney fanatic like myself, you are likely to find yourself falling down the rabbit hole and chasing the cuteness out of sheer curiosity. Unfortunately, this falls drastically short of expectations. Let's start with the presentation - which is beautiful! There are different sets of plates but I really enjoyed the clock and the birdcage and how they connect from the larger one to a smaller one. The menu is within a book and the teas are themed after the characters. They even put a little paper crown on the teapot for the queen! They definitely pay attention to a few of the details on the actual tiered platter. There is a pocket watch, a carrot, and a chess board chocolate. However, I feel like they could've done much more with the decor within the building and even more of the food. So why only one star? The tea itself is tasty but does not have any type of strainer to prevent the tea leaves from going into your cup. The service is really slow and all of the towers are pre-prepared and the food isn't actually tasty. The sandwiches are stale and I could make a tastier pb&j in my sleep. Really nice tea spot. I came here around February but I imagine it's nicer (read warmer) during the summer. It felt very chilly. They had blankets available on each of the chairs and I'm not sure if that was for decor or for a more efficient purpose. Regardless, the place is still very beautiful. Although it's an Alice in Wonderland theme, I think the theme really comes more from the tablesetting as opposed to the overall ambience. I enjoyed the various selections of tea to choose from. The ones we selected were the Mad Hatters tea and the White Rabbit tea and the Mad Hatter signature tea is probably similar to English breakfast tea. I really like the flavor of the White Rabbit Tea and I wish I bought some home with me. It's definitely a lot of food. My tip would be to skip breakfast and treat this as a brunch. My favorites were the sandwiches and macaron. They had a bunch of other sweets too but I was already too full and sweet toothed out to try any more. So naturally I doggy bagged it, or in their case, I PURSE bagged it. Lol! Yes, their doggy bag is in the form of a purse. So cute! On a side note I also like their bathrooms; each stall had its own individual sink for you to wash your hands. Very posh! Total cost was about 44 pounds or US$54. Yeah, it is a lot of food but a lot more than what I would pay for a series of sweets and sandwiches (and ok tea). I don't think the average Brit is doing afternoon tea every day. I was visiting London for the first time and the afternoon tea was something I wanted to try out while visiting. I chose this restaurant as it had a vegetarian menu. The atmosphere was beautiful with a gorgeous garden. The ambiance of the indoor restaurant was nice. You can see the kitchen where they prepare the afternoon tea snacks. My mom and I were seated indoors. Our server was intermittently attentive and provided us with a sample of bottles of the 5 teas in their selection. Tea: I got the Mad Hatter (green tea with passion fruit, guava and mango) and my mom ordered the rose infused tea. Both were simply delicious! They provide a generous serving of both teas; we did not finish the complete pot of our respective teas. The Mad Hatter's Afternoon Tea was a lovely experience albeit very expensive. The intricate design of all the cakes and desserts was amazing, and the tea was sublime. My favourite tea was Queen of hearts with a vanilla flavour, and the Cheshire Cat one which tasted sweet like marmalade was also pretty nice. The cute little "drink me" potions which was fruit juice, chess style chocolate cake bites and mini sandwiches were so cute. My favourite treat was the bottle shaped macaroons! The service was top notch, although there was a 10% service charge despite it being only two if us, adding £5 to the bill. It is one of the very high end expensive places of Afternoon tea (Including service charge we paid a total of £110.40 for the two of us (55.20 pp). But for that special occasion and for those who love Alice, it's a lovely treat. They also have some pretty cocktails as well as coffees and regular tea. The atmosphere is very lovely as it's in the conservatory-like space, so it feels like a a garden. They have heaters as well, so there is no worries about the cold! They ask about allergies which was nice. I have an allergy to cheese and they specially catered for it making my sandwich portions without cheese or cream cheese. Also be sure to mention if you are vegan/ vegetarian as there is ham, egg etc. in the sandwiches also. However, I would discourage anyone who does not eat or like sweets, as it's 80% sweet sugary stuff and only a small bit is savoury. Here's what you need to know: while it is pricey, the food is excellent and the Alice in Wonderland theme details are very well done. The service is par excellence. Outstanding. Good for kids and adults, as the demographic in the restaurant displayed. About £55/person which is about $72/person (including service tax - aka gratuity - of 15%) with USD exchange rate in Dec 2017. Unlimited food and tea is offered in that price. I understand why some people have given it a low rating owing to the high pricing, but London is generally expensive, especially in hotels. The tea has Alice in Wonderland themes down to the last pastry, but it's not a theatrical show so you won't find servers dressed up as white rabbits checking their pocket watches. That shouldn't be your expectation. The cakes, tea selection, pastries, sandwiches, scones, hazelnut ice cream with dried honeycomb (dressed up as a flower pot full of fresh aerated dirt), and accoutrements were all excellent. I can't agree with even one reviewer so said the food was bad (at least based on our Dec 2017 experience). Our server was as pleasant as could be, and gave us the option of buying 2 adult tea services, and did not charge for our 4 year old. Considering that a nice afternoon tea Stateside (e.g. a Langham Chicago) costs about $75/person, this is not that shocking a price to pay in London. Overall, we loved our experience. While I can't say I'll be headed back there any time soon because there are so many other great afternoon teas to explore in London, I will say that we were satisfied with our experience. Gets very busy as the afternoon continues so if I were to do it again I would make the first reservation of the day. This was the first afternoon tea of our trip to London. It was easily the most visibly beautiful of all the teas we had and the most creative. I love how the tea menu was in a book and the teas in "drink me" type jars. The best part of the tea was definitely the savory sandwiches; they were the best we had our whole trip for afternoon tea. They have such a variety but are also very filling. The desserts were cute and yummy but I really wasn't a fan of the scones. They were too sweet tasting. While I liked the tea flavors we chose, I also wish there was a more bitter/strong option like an Earl Grey. The ones they had were very flowery but this also isn't your traditional afternoon tea. I don't know if I should even be complaining about this either but they bring out an extra ice cream dessert which at that point I couldn't even consider because I was so stuffed. You get your money's worth in food but I felt like I wasted it because I couldn't eat it all. The hotel itself is pretty plain on the outside but inside it is fun and has pops of color everywhere. Our first waiter was very accommodating and let us change the table. He is the only 5 stars I would give to this place. Too bad he shift ended in the middle of our tea time. Desserts: they were nothing like you would expect from looking at all the Instagram photos or food blogs. All the desserts were poorly placed (thrown) on the tray. Didn't look appetizing at all. I have seen photos of what they were supposed to look like so I knew you didn't do your job well. Plus they did NOT taste good. They were so dry, hard and sad. When going to London, I wanted an afternoon tea experience, and the Sanderson Mad Hatter's Tea definitely did not disappoint. I'm an English teacher, so I was intrigued by the mad hatter theme. The details of the menu and decor gave you the whimsical feeling you would expect from an Alice in Wonderland theme. It was a little pricey, but the food and tea were delicious. Also, the outside atmosphere had a tropical and relaxing feel. Although I would probably not return again (due to the cost), unless a friend really wanted to go, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and I am glad I went. In short, the atmosphere and tea selection are amazing! However, both the sweet and savory snacks are disappointing. Comes at an expensive price of about 50 pound per person (more if you add champagne). The theme of Mad Hatters is absolutely adorable. They provide the most aesthetic experience down to the core -- everything is Alice in Wonderland themed, from the walls, snacks, and utensils down to even the sugar box. The outdoor seating is gorgeous -- a garden scene with flowers decorated everywhere. It's tented and heated for the winter. The indoor seating is also beautiful. There are 5 tea selections and you can enjoy unlimited servings of however many teas (or coffees) you'd like. They come in small bottles for you to sniff and then request. They were all amazing, no complaints there! The bad part is the food. The sweets were overwhelmingly sugary. Everything from The mini cakes to the macarons. It was diabetes in small bites. The top tier of the afternoon tea delectable was quite literally mushroom themed MARSHMALLOWS. Not worth at all. The savory snacks were disappointing as well. The ham and cheese sandwiches left a poor aftertaste that was quite strong. The other mini sandwiches were not too appetizing. The quail egg was mediocre. Everything had a bit of an off putting or disappointing taste. The kitchen forgot to place the crab rolls on our tier (we almost didn't notice until we overheard the table next to us mentioned it to their server!) Be sure to check that you received all your items, especially for the high price you are paying! Servers are really kind and attentive. They walk around to check up on you quite often and are pleasant to retrieve you more tea or anything else you'd like. The restrooms deserve a mention of itself. They're individual stalls with special kelp hand wash and lotion. Super clean and the mirrors are also elegantly in theme! I loved the attention to detail. Overall, I enjoyed my experience here mostly due to the atmosphere. They were so intricate in how they designed their environment that you truly receive a great experience despite the subpar food options. Prior to arriving in London I made an online reservations for one at the Mad Hatters Afternoon Tea. I checked in to the restaurant and quickly used to the restroom to wash up. I opted for a table inside since it was still a little chilly outside. My server welcomed me and presented me with cards and bottles of the various types of teas I could order. Tip: you are able to order a pot of tea in one flavor and when finished try another flavor. I ordered my tea along with a glass of champagne. I was happy to see that the restaurant offered a vegan menu (no need for Lactaid today) but unfortunately I was slightly disappointed. The atmosphere is lovely, the place settings adorable, the service professional and the food appearance is whimsical. My disappointment was in the flavors of the food. For the savory dishes the scotch egg was very good but the rest of the sandwiches were overwhelmed by avocado. The sweet items were mixed. The meringues were too soft and ended up being chewy (Meringue cookies should have a crunchy exterior while the inside is tender), the marshmallows were too sticky but the cakes were very good. My time at the restaurant was relaxing afternoon and even though it wasn't perfect, I would go back and try their regular menu. read more

THE GOOD: - The staff was very sweet and attentive. I'm a vegetarian and they seemed very accommodating, although I'm curious how they'd manage if someone came in who was gluten free or vegan. - The ambience is very nice. The garden is pretty and the hotel it resides in is pretty cool. - The deserts were pretty tasty. I did a package, not A La Carte, and I really dug getting my own tray of little finger sandwiches and cakes and things. I like getting little bits of lots of different things, and the presentation was really lovely (very faux posh, but in a cute way) THE BAD: - The non-desert based foods were not great. It was a lot of variations of cheese and bread. Which I normally don't complain about, but I would have liked something a bit more fresh as well. - Expensive. Everything in London is expensive. But I'll go ahead and label this as overpriced. You're paying for the experience, but it isn't that immersive. It's like it can't decide if it's a fancy tea room or if it's themed the way Rainforest's Café is themed. Which ends with the consumer feeling a bit like they just paid A LOT for something that, in the end, was probably at the bare minimum of what it needed to be in order to not be considered a disappointment. - I'm putting EXPENSIVE down here twice in case you missed that the first time. If you're with someone who loves Alice and Wonderland, or with kids who are into that kind of thing (I don't want to gender it by saying "little girls would be all over this), I think it's probably worth the money. But if you're two dead-eyed millennials who're trying to just do something cute on your trip to London, you can probably find something else. TLDR: Probably good for kids, or for your mom who loves Alice and Wonderland. Maybe pass if you're a tourist on a budget. read more
