During our week-long trip in New Zealand, we did not have a single bad food experience except for at Mac's Steak House. We were looking for a place to eat lunch while visiting Rotorua. Eat Streat seemed like a good place to view our options. We chose poorly, and I do not recommend eating here. There was one server who had a major attitude. She spent half her time on the phone and rolled her eyes every time we interacted with her. The one male server was friendly which earns back one star on this review. The food was mediocre. The seafood chowder was extremely bland. I never salt my food, but this chowder was beyond saving. The grilled sirloin steak was below average and barely seasoned. For a place that prides itself on its steak, this ain't it. There are better steak options elsewhere. We were so disappointed with our meal that quickly paid and left, still hungry because we couldn't push ourselves to finish our flavorless food. We went across the street to a fast food joint just to quell our hunger. read more

*DO NOT EAT HERE* The menu held such promise - unfortunately the service was awful and so was the food I ordered. My friend had the lamb shank and said it was pretty decent. I had the mussels - they were fresh and meaty but the cream sauce was an odd touch and kind of reminded me of poutine gravy. I wouldn't order those unless you're brave or can ask to have them served without the sauce. The fish of the day was barely edible. It smelled really fishy when they brought it out and then there wasn't any seasoning or sauce on it. It was a generous helping of fish but really nothing to write home about. The pesto sauce on the risotto was very heavy and tasted like a "just add water" sauce packet I've gotten at the grocery store back home in the past. Yuck! The risotto was basically just your average short grain rice - perhaps risotto is not actually risotto at all restaurants in NZ - anyway it was not good. Avoid this dish if you dare to dine here. At checkout we were in a hurry to get back to our Airbnb before the dark settled in. The server had us go inside to pay to split the cheque - the girl rang me up and then rang up my friend and charged my meal to her tab as well. So the manager had to be called over...and he could have made it right by simply refunding the overage charged to my friend...but instead he looked at everything, realized there were two charges for the fish dinner (one a fish and chips and one a fish of the day - an error on the part of the servers) and forced me to pay for the fish of the day before opening the cash drawer to refund both of us for the wrongly charged items. Back home the manager would have made it right simply by apologizing for the incompetence on the part of the servers and refunding my friend who was overcharged by $30. What a nightmare. By the time it was sorted it was pitch black out. read more

We stopped here for a small lunch; we were able to sit outside on a windier day due to their wonderful heated lamps and fireplaces. The restaurant was fairly empty, but overall decent ambiance. We were practically in and out. Order, food, eat, bam done, no lingering. There wasn't that much to the place. My husband got the Eggs Benedict, and it looked like nothing special. It actually looked so small I felt bad taking a bite to try it out, so I let him devour it all. He said it was just eggs and toast...so plain. I got the tofu salad. I love tofu! This one was cooked a bit plainly, just chunks of heated tofu with arugula, chick peas, lentils, and beats. There were A LOT of chick peas. LIKE A LOT. They overwhelmed the salad. There was a good sauce, it coated the chick peas, so I didn't get bored with them, I enjoyed every bite and it made a great leftover. 3.5 stars. We enjoyed our food. The time between our appetizer and entree was over 30 mins long. My husband complained that his food was a bit cold. A family of three sat down in the restaurant 5 minutes after us, had their order taken before us (ours were taken right after), had their meals come, finished, paid and left before we even gotten our entree. Our family stopped by after checking out the menu for lunch. It seemed promising, and everything sounded good. However, once we ordered it took a quite while to revive our food, even though there were only 2-3 other parties in the restaurant. The duck in the duck salad was extremely sweet, as was the BBQ chicken. The rump steak with mushroom sauce was a good value and tasty. The French onion soup had a good onion soup base, rich and nicely seasoned, but it is served with a slice of cheesy toast on the side, not the traditional oven melted cheese over French baguette slice, baked in a crock. The seafood pasta had a nice and tender pasta base, but very few seafood pieces. Overall a decent place, but there are definitely better food and faster service in town. read more

Mac's is on a nice strip of restaurants and steps from the lake. It is a very nice atmosphere and the patio dining has a good ambiance with fire pits lit throughout. There are nearly a dozen eateries to choose from in this strip, but we were in the mood for steak and their menu looked appealing, so we decided to give it a try. Our server was polite but straight to the point. Not a fellow I would engage in conversation but alas, he was efficient. It was early afternoon, mid-week, and restaurant was not even half capacity. The food came out hot and within a reasonable time. The steak was delicious and cooked as asked. The au jus that accompanied the steak was flavorful. The kids meals were good as well. There was nothing outstanding about the cuts of meats or the flavor. This was a good steak, with plain seasonings, but filling and delicious nevertheless. Contrary to other reviews ours is overwhelmingly positive. Turned up Sunday morning about 10am for breakfast. 'All day breakfast' and 'eggs benne' and a few coffees - faultless service and food. Excellent coffee. I would return here without hesitation for breakfast. It was not so busy at the time but larger groups of 6-7 were turning up for brunch. read more

Came for dinner and ordered the catch of the day. It was a great portion size and I ended up splitting it with my husband. The fish was cooked perfect and the risotto was delicious. We also ordered the side of truffled green beans and artisan bread. I thought the green beans tasty and my husband thought they would be cooked a little more. The bread was great as well with three dips. The beer ... I'm pleasantly surprised with the tap. I've found the beer to be a bit warmer than my liking at some places; here however it was nice and cold and stayed cold even in the sun so thumbs up there. I highly recommend this place.
