I was just making a quick stop in having been to the location in South End. I know they're known for their smoked meat, but I opted for a burger tonight. The NC Western Burger. They call it a 1/2 pound burger and it is every bit of that. The burger itself was very juicy and full of flavor. I had a side of Mac n cheese. Some of the bits of it were a little over cooked, but pretty good overall. I might try a different side next time. I sat at the bar since I was by myself. I wish I'd gotten the bartenders name, but she provided the nicest service I've had in a while when eating out. Across the restaurant industry, prices have gone up making it more difficult to eat out. It's nice knowing that not all people in the service industry take their role for granted. It made my rare dining trip out worthwhile. Looking forward to going back out to Mac's next time I'm craving a big juicy burger. read more

We ordered almost everything to try. The ribs, chicken, brisket, and beef sausage were all good- the ribs were our favorite. We got the beans, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, street corn, fried pickles and egg rolls as sides/starters. The fried pickles were soggy however it was a Door Dash order so that could have been the issue. The egg rolls were good. The mac and cheese and street corn were both good. The mashed potatoes were okay, but not great. We did not like the beans at all. Tried a bunch of sauces. They didn't come labeled so not sure what we liked. Would definitely go back for the ribs, egg rolls, and mac and cheese! read more

Mac's Speed Shop - Barbeque Near Me - Matthews, North Carolina

Lifelong friends from my college years and I went to Mac's Speed Shop after the funeral of one of my friend's Mom's funeral. I live near the Mac's Speed Shop at Five Points in Raleigh, and go often, so I was very happy when Mac's was suggested., It was perfect for the informal repast. Service was great. He had lots of appetizers including fried okra and Carolina Rolls. The restaurant reminds me of the former Roadhouse on Ventura Boulevard in LA. Very cool place. read more

Great eats and open air ambiance but indoor also. Great folks working there and very substantial draft beer selection. The BBQ is to die for and the sauce line-up incredible. Why don't we have these out west? read more

I visited my brother for the labor day weekend and went to lunch at Macs speed shop for lunch. We were greeted and sitted us immediately. I had the IPA beer(Little Slurp) , a light beer suggested by the waitress , for my first and second libation. My meal started with the Down south egg rolls which were to die for. The dipping sause added a zest to the mouthwatering of crispy and succulent taste. For my entree I had lemon peppers wings(flats) with a side of blue cheese. Every bite a.napkin was needed since the flavors were oh so good. Mac shop had a cantina spanish vibe and the wait staff was attentive. The egg rolls were hot and delicious. Beer and barbecue are a beautiful combination. Service and food were great. We had the pulled pork platter. Choice of sauces on the table...I liked the "western " North Carolina style. The yellow traditional Carolina style is a little too vinegary for me. The best part was the banana pudding dessert layered with nilla wafers...the ultimate in comfort food. Big enough to share. read more

Hate to say it, went there on Mother's Day and it was a terrible meal. All I wanted was brisket. We walked in and got seated. Went to order. They don't have brisket or any draft beer! No warning until we went to order. Nothing tasted right. All our meals tasted off. Beans were terrible ( inedible) burnt ends were basically fatty pieces of brisket tossed in a sauce. They were terrible and slimy! However, our server was just so lovley read more

Great customer service - we were seated pretty quickly. It was kinda cold in the area we sat but we powered through it. Food was just as you would expect - delish! Especially loved the nachos & their family style combo! Loved how we were able to mix and match different things together. Brisket was my fave too. Cheers! read more

Great food. Great service and James manager and Tristan our server. We're excellent and waited on us hand and foot no matter what you asked for. Help my 81-year-old mother in law with a different seat and also walked her to the restroom. Excellent, thank you! read more

For one I'm black I walk in they look surprised to see me the atmosphere feels racist honestly there BBQ sauce is nasty all the sauces The servers were great n friendly just gives me a cracker barrel feeling in there the brisket could of been more tender the ribs were rough but its nkt macs fault clt as a whole doesn't have any standout good restaurants like Houston clt more for pictures read more

3*= A OK 1st time here with a group of friends. Seating was fine and service was well. Drinks were not the best. Not balanced and sour mix/lime juice forward. Food was tasty and complaints were minimal. (i.e. too much salad dressing when dressing salad, and could have been hotter in temperature) read more

We shared a couple of appetizers we had the burnt ends, which were good. Also shared a side of french fries. They have an egg wash on them not my favorite style of fries. Both were good, but the Best thing we had was the hush puppies they have a hint of sweetness to them that is delicious. The only thing to improve the hush puppies would be the serve with room butter read more

Overall a great spot to eat. Food is tasty and the atmosphere is very friendly and sporty. Only catch is the food is a bit inconsistent. The hushpuppies are to die for !! But all the other sides were just mediocre. It's a hit or miss. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. read more

Great place for beers. Huge tab options. Had lunch with friends- I ordered the thunderbird salad with pulled chicken dressing chimichurri on the side: great portion and the chicken was very delicious and dark meat. The appetizers were also very flavorful- the freshly made pork rings and fried pickles. Friends ordered the Brisket and was also very good. I will return to bring my husband who lives bbq. read more

Worst customer service I got here today. I was waiting at the front for 20 minutes. I saw no workers or they were just being lazy talking to each other. This is the worst place I've ever been to McDonald's is even faster than the all. y'all should always have someone at the host stand. They should never leave. read more

We came here on a Sunday for lunch and it did not disappoint. For the price and portions Macs is your best bang for buck. The flavor is tremendous. Our only complaint were the ribs were too chewy. Seems like they didn't cook for long enough but the Briskey. Fell apart. Ridiculous. The chicken. Melted off the bone. The pulled pork, Out of bounds ridiculous. The white sauce is to die for, I wanted to dunk everything in it. Out waitress Bailey helped us navigate and choose our sides and entree and took great care of us the entire time. So far Mac's has had the best bbq we've tried in Charlotte. Don't miss out on the Matthews location as it's our new staple for BBQ. read more

After a day at Carowinds, my boyfriends and I decided to go eat somewhere. I stumbled upon Mac's speed shop on Yelp with great reviews so we went. We ordered a platter and nothing was special to me. It was just an average bbq place. I felt the food lacked a lot of flavor. Also, I tried squeezing one of the sauce bottles and it EXPLODED on me, the table, and the floor. You can imagine that it was messy. When the waitress walked to the table she informed us that the bottles have been exploding on people recently. I would think that once it has happened more than a few times you should switch the bottles... but it's not my restaurant. read more

Inconsistent food quality. Ok, so I went with 2 friends. One enjoyed her meal. Another was so excited to get the nachos, which she had previously loved. This time they were so spicy that they were inedible. She just picked around and basically ate plain chips. I ordered brisket with 2 sides. The sides were both a 10, but the brisket was super dry and had no flavor at all. So I tried to compensate by pouring sauces onto the serving dish, which has a brown paper-like thing on it. The brown paper got soggy immediately and tore all to pieces. How are they unaware of that?? Lastly, I got a banana pudding to go. It was soooo sweet, the first and only taste was of sugar that even my 15 year old son took one bite and gave it back to me. This restaurant is unloved. How can this happen with the brown paper, how can you get a classic dessert wrong when you only sell a tiny handful of desserts, and how can you make one of your top and more expensive dishes bone dry? It felt like nobody was at the helm. The only good thing was our waitress was pleasant and good at her job. She checked on us but didn't hover. The runner as per usual in this price range auctioned off the food, "who gets the...?", which I find irritating but understand at this price point. Also, a bonus for a place with a rowdy look, it wasn't loud. read more

My son and I met my daughter in law there yesterday along with my grandson. We were seated at the bar-we we served, drank and had lunch, After my grandson was served his food-the manager came up and said that my grandson had to leave the area basically. Bean said there is no minimum age requirement for patrons to sit at a bar.....It was amazing-basically kicked out because of his age--It is discrimination. She basically didnt like us i suppose. I need to inform the reader that this was the best BBQ I have ever eaten in my life. have not been able to stop talking about my experience at Mac's Speed Shop for days. I was in town briefly and called the Matthews location hoping to try pulled pork and ribs with collard greens and fried okra. Not only did Belinda (the FOH manager) assist me with getting my basic order, she also showed me the depths of true southern hospitality by packing my dinner with different flavors of BBQ sauce and even including small samples of the sides I wasn't able to order. I feasted that night the likes of which need to be studied. The meats were juicy, flavorful perfection: so much so that they stood alone without sauce. But oh boy, did I enjoy the BBQ sauces. Each sauce elevated the meats differently, and I rotated flavors the entire meal because they all had something different to offer. The collard greens, the fried okra, the hush puppies with sweet butter, the mac n cheese, mashed potatoes, and even a small slice of brisket Belinda went above and beyond to include for me were all OUT OF THIS WORLD. I didn't miss out on anything with these wonderful samples! I felt so cared for, and as a stranger in a strange land, it brought me some warmth that was sorely needed. This was my true introduction to Carolina BBQ and I believe the bar was set so high, it is unlikely to be met again. Belinda and I chatted for some time at the front of house as I was picking up. She's someone I will always remember, as I was a New Yorker far from home who really appreciated such kindness. Thank you all for giving me an experience that genuinely brings tears to my eyes: not just the amazing food, but the truly awesome folks you have staffed. My friend in Matthews was totally on the money to recommend this business. I went to food Nirvana and now get to tell everyone I know how much fun I had in North Carolina. read more

We saw that there was a super bowl special for bbq, ribs, and wings and it you spend $110 you get $20 in gift cards. I placed the order with the manager Sean, who was wonderful to work with. We also added on fries and hushpuppies and got all the sauce on the side. We asked for the order to be ready at 4:45. When we arrived there were a lot of people waiting on their food by the hostess station and our order wasn't ready. It was chaotic and unorganized. We waited over 20 minutes for our food and when our food finally came were were missing our reward cards and had to wait on those. I was irritated because I'm pregnant and didn't want to wait inside of a restaurant for that long. Welp....things turned around quick when we got back with the food. Everything was absolutely incredible and packaged extremely well. We had a Super Bowl get together with our family and everyone was raving about the food. We couldn't decide what was better the pork, ribs or bbq. We loved having the sauces on the side. The fries were incredible as well! Five stars for the food and three stars for the service at the front. read more

The atmosphere is definitely that of a sports bar. Multiple TV's, loud conversation, and tonight there was live music. Definitely no surprises there ! The food was good. The bun on my burger was tasty and flavorful. The bacon was cooked superbly and there was a nice char on the burger patty. Though, the patty was lacking in any flavor or seasoning. If the burger wasn't cooked so well, I would have been a lot more disappointed. The chili was great ! A little soupy for what I consider chili to be, but full of flavor. The drink was VERY alcoholic and bitter, even after being told that I wouldn't be able to taste the alcohol. Overall, nice place. I would come back to try more of their food. read more

Went to Macs tonight for dinner. It's one of our favorites. Someone took our drink order but we needed a little more time to decide what to order. The server never came back to the table. This place was so good few years ago . Food was fresh and delicious. Had many options. Now it became a tasteless overcooked bbq with a extremely limited menu . It's actually very sad because we used to frequent macs often... Service is slow .. even on a very empty night . Half of menu isn't available. I have loved this restaurant since I first tried it. I had never been to this location before. I do feel that this space is smaller but fully staffed. I came during peak lunch hours and the restaurant was fully staffed and prepared for the lunch rush. Parking is available but not enough since it is surrounded by different businesses. Carpooling would be ideal. Plenty of draft beer to choose from. Patio seating is also limited. read more

Food's okay but the service is terrible. My wife and I had a chance to have lunch together and she suggested we try Mac's. No one waiting and still took 5 minutes to be seated. Wait staff was slow and non-attentive so that was awesome. Food was meh and pricey. So thanks but no thanks. read more

Gave this place a try while I was in the area. So the stand out, their hush puppies were the sweetest and most delicious I've had to date. The collard greens and Mac n cheese were really tasty as well. Tried the shredded pork, and burnt ends. I enjoyed the shredded pork nothing crazy special but good none the less. I was indifferent about the burnt ends and likely skip those next time. This place had fun vibes, the food was good in a fun bar type of way, I would return for a low key experience. read more

I got the pulled pork sandwich with fries. The pulled pork was okay although it wasn't very warm. The fries on the other hand were room temperature/cold like they'd been sitting for a while. Excellent wings and service!!! I would recommend this restaurant to everyone! Good for family's and groups too!

Good place for lunch and a beer. Barbecue tasted good and their sauces are solid. I had collard greens as well which were pretty great. Not a fan of their Brunswick stew but that could be just a personal preference. I sat at the bar being that it only had a couple of people sitting there and the bartender was overall pretty decent. As bartenders do, he was having conversations with some of the patrons and may have lost track of time a tad but hey, I'm having barbecue and beers so why complain? read more

Came with a group of friends for happy hour and live music. Solo musician was great but we were 4 of 6 ppl in entire bar area. Lord. Where do I start. Long long time ago, this was a great place for food. Guess they have embraced BEER and Bikes and forgot what the BBQ and food and sides used to be. Ordered smoked chicken, they should rename it card board chicken. The baked beans used to be sweet and loads of flavor and now is nothing but ketchup. At least the ranch dressing was good. I should have remembered but gave this place a third redo. Well. 100% never coming back. The waitress was nice tho so. read more
