Before 1848, this was done with a trip on a rowboat or ferry; after 1848 a train suspension bridge was the preferred highway to freedom. The museum takes 30-60 minutes to explore, and it's beautifully done in multimedia. The gift shop is worth a look too: Volumes of history, and T-shirts. As I was driving away, I looked over Whirlpool Drive to the gorge, and saw the ruins of the old suspension bridge. It made the heart ache: So much human drama happened there, and now it's incognito.

Before and after your visit, the gift shop is worth exploring, it's filled with meaningful items. I picked up a Black History Matters shirt and was very pleased with the quality. For the tour itself, I had a young guide who was both knowledgeable and engaging. As a local, he tied the history to personal experiences, which made the stories even more impactful. The tour was very informative and offered insight into another side of the Underground Railroad routes that many people don't often hear about. The location is also convenient--if you're traveling by Amtrak to Canada, the museum is in the same building, making it a great activity before your train. The cost is a small fee, and absolutely worth every bit for the experience and knowledge gained. A must-visit if you're in the area.

I somewhat knew what to…read moreexpect because I have been to several butterfly farms before, so I was expecting the usual enclosed environment with butterflies flying freely around. However, this conservatory was even prettier than some of the other butterfly attractions I have visited. The environment itself is beautiful and peaceful. There are numerous butterflies flying around, along with lovely greenery, waterfalls, and water features that make the space feel calm and relaxing. It is a very nice attraction for anyone who enjoys nature, photography, or simply wants a peaceful place to explore. One part that really stood out to me was the interactive activity at the end of the experience. Guests are given a coloring sheet with a butterfly, hummingbird, or another design to color. Once finished, the attraction attendant scans the artwork, and then your colored image appears on a screen. I thought that was such a cool and creative feature. It added something extra and memorable to the visit. Overall, the Butterfly Conservatory was a beautiful and enjoyable attraction. The butterflies, scenery, water features, and interactive activity made it a relaxing and fun experience. I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

This attraction doesn't require an appointment, but it is a longer bus ride from the other Niagara Parks attractions, so be sure to plan for that. We used our passes to take the WEGO bus from Niagara Takes Flight to the butterfly conservatory. Rain was in the forecast, so this is a nice, indoor option. The conservatory itself houses so many butterflies, and they tell you upon entry that it is thought to be lucky if a blue one lands on you, so everyone inside is doing their best to attract a blue butterfly. Several landed on us, and while you don't want to move for fear of them flying away, you also want to get your companion's attention to snap that perfect pic! We had lots of fun even though the temperature is kept very warm and the space was crowded. Clearly, everyone had the same rainy-day activity planned. My only complaint comes from when I asked about re-entry. I was told that we could leave the conservatory, but not the building. We wanted to visit the cafe and grab a bite to eat or something to drink and perhaps return once the crowd had thinned out a bit, but that is not permitted. We were told that we could step out to cool down in the gift shop or lobby area and then return through the same entrance that we used when we arrived. The volunteer got on her walkie to tell someone that we'd be coming back in, so I'm not even sure that this is normally permitted. Overall, it was a fun and new experience for us. The staff was kind and the conservatory is beautiful. There's also a botanical garden and at least one beehive there, but we didn't get to explore the outdoor areas due to the rain.

I would definitely skip this museum!…read more I was expecting a lot more from this museum considering the name. It could have had more about the history of the falls, it's significance to the residents, more indigenous history, some underground railroad history, maybe some scientific facts about the falls. They had a random tattoo exhibit. They went into a war that I didn't even know happened so I did learn something but I was disappointed. The highlight was the gift shop. They have awesome soaps, magnets and eclipse watching glasses. The bug artwork and taxidermy dog were creepy but cool. If you are a local I would come to support. If you're visiting don't bother. Hate to be hard on a museum but this was disappointing! Staff was friendly as usual.

Also it was amazing to put on the replica uniform from the War of 1812 and carrying a riffle.. The kids enjoyed it the most. In the 2nd floor there are another exhibition that will get you immersed in the history of the iconic City of Niagara Falls. We enjoyed the most three interactive stations in this gallery that allow us to touch mother nature, span the gorge and become a daredevil. There are 4 places to park infront of the museum on the main street. And I think there is parking lot on the back ( we didn't try that as we parked infront of the museum ). There is a gift shop where you can buy souvenirs. The visit may take around one hour.
