We treated ourselves to a date night down in Newcastle and we weren't disappointed. The service was very attentive and friendly, making recommendations and not overbearing rushing us through our dinner. We started with a couple of cocktails, a Juniper Orchid and a prosecco and passion fruit sorbet float. I would happily have sat here all night and just drank the cocktails! I had to start chicken liver parfait with brioche and Chutney, rich and flavoursome, and my bf had soup, I can't remember what type but there were little crispy bits of bacon, he devoured it! My mains Oven Roasted Chicken withSmoked Corn and Roast Garlic mash, I think chicken dinners can get a bit samey, but this was amazing, delicious and just the right size. We opted to stare then chocolate fondant and a few more cocktails. Although it was on the prices side it was absolutely work it and we are already talking about when we are going back!!

The place looks like your typical cafeteria from the outside. Don't let that fool you. Way better than cafe food is served here. Even has gained the attention of Michelin reviewers. I ordered the Roast Turkey Breast & Baked Ham, parsley & onion stuffing, creamy mash potato, seasonal vegetables, & roast gravy. It was absolutely delicious and the best meal I had in Northern Ireland. The Turkey Breast and Baked Ham were cooked perfectly. Living in America and coming home to Ireland I notice how different the meat will taste, since the cows are grass fed and they cook their meat well done. You're not able to order meat rare or medium like in America. I was a happy camper with my meal and I finished my whole plate, which never happens. Everyone else had Maginns Speciality Beef Burger: toasted brioche bun, bacon & cheddar melt, tomato relish, crisp onion ring with fresh cut chips. Chicken Stack-crispy breaded chicken fillet, scallion mash, bacon & cheddar melt, crisp onion ring, black peppercorn sauce. Roast Silverside of Beef-Yorkshire pudding, roast gravy, creamy mashed potato, seasonal vegetables, roast gravy. A custom vegan salad especially made for my friend. Last but not least dessert. Warm Chocolate Fudge Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream. Fresh Fruit Pavlova with fresh cream, fruit coulis. Deep Dish Apple & Rhubarb Crumble and custard. I would recommend coming here for a good wholesome meal.

The tables by the entrance are the best but don't be fooled by the small appearance its like Dr who's tardis as the space through the next set of doors there's a massive room for dining or dancing. You have to park in a car park on the opposite side of the road which is a bit inconvenient but its just added character and the food was nice too. We'd love to go back sometime soon .

As for the food, we have eaten in a lot of places in a number of countries but this was as good as anything we have come acrooss. And the finishing touch was dining beside the huge log fire on a freezing winter night. It was so good that we went back another couple of times during our week's stay. We are going ti Ireland again shortly on holiday and Saltwater Brig will be our number one priority for another visit. We were back in Ireland for another holiday in November. The Saltwater Brig was top of our agenda for a return visit.......and we weren't disappointed. Once again everything about it was superb - the beautiful location beside Strangford Lough, the cosy surroundings and the welcoming staff (especially Olive who is the friendliest waitress you could meet). Then there is the food. The extensive menu is fantastic and we cannot speak highly enough of its quality, and all very reasonably priced. If you enjoy "a taste of Ulster" put The Saltwater Brig on your MUST VISIT list. We guarantee you will love it.

We were there a few nights ago to celebrate our youngest son's birthday. This restaurant is a…read morefavourite of ours. We had booked and arrived as booked. We didn't say it was a birthday. We waited to be seated but there wasn't anyone to seat us. We waited far too long and when the waitress - the older of the only two waitresses serving/ arrived. The greeting was flat and almost felt like she was being put out. She arrived just in time as the barman was about to seat us. I've eaten here hundreds of times over the years. I ordered oysters as a starter only for the waitress to return a few moments later to confirm they had none. Well that's a first. Carlingford Oyster company is a few miles away. So my order became seafood chowder and fillet steak medium. My side dish tobacco onions. My son also ordered the chowder which for the half lifetime I've been eating it here has been superb but not this time. We each knew it wasn't as rich and deep flavoured as before and we were really disappointed. This is one of their finest dishes and we really hope this is a one off. If it happens again we'll send it back and have it off the bill. The price charged means it must be ace every time. I asked for white pepper for my chowder the availability of which was uncertain and when it arrived the younger waitress said I was lucky. If white pepper isn't always available just close. It's not as important as salt is to cooking but it's great for seasoning. I often choose it over black pepper almost always. My fillet was requested medium and it came with a pepper sauce that didn't pour but moved sludge like in lumps in short it was gloop; if it had cream it wasn't discernible nor had it evidence of butter. It tasted factory made. One of the corner stones of the success of Fitzpatrick's was cooking based on classic French cooking (Escoffier) and sauces. It elevates their chowder and onion soups and makes sauces moreish - this pepper sauce is far away from this and it's not and nowhere near good enough. If Danny was still there this sauce wouldn't be and no chef would have had the nerve to put it before him. My fillet was well done, medium to well and medium as I proceeded through it. I'm not precious about it and it was tasty good quality meat which I enjoyed. I only draw a line at bloody meat. My son always opts for rare. The tobacco onions were superbly flavoured stand out 5 stars. I asked for English mustard for my steak but it never arrived and the two overworked waitresses were nowhere to be seen. As desserts weren't offered due to their invisibility I got up to pay. There were five or six guests in the doorway waiting to be seated just as we were earlier that evening and no waitress around. The barman took our payment and I didn't tip which I didn't like but I was not happy. I told the barman some of the issues lousy pepper sauce, non delivery of mustard and poor tasting chowder: he said he'd pass it on. Next time I will return food that's not up to the standard I'm used to at the prices charged.
