Bridesmaid hair
Jessica C.

I recently was in a wedding and the bride hired Mack Stylist to come to our hotel room and do the bridal party's hair and makeup. I am rating 3.5 (okay 4 by default) stars as an average. I feel like I need to write two separate reviews because I had two different experiences. Here's why. Makeup: 5 stars! Lakisha was absolutely amazing. She was very professional, funny and sweet. She transformed everyone to look even more beautiful than they already were. The bride requested a "natural" look for the wedding and she delivered. I had the pleasure of getting my makeup done at 8am and the wedding ceremony wasn't even until 4pm. After getting my makeup done I hung around the hotel room with the girls, ate breakfast and then lunch. Before Lakisha left she touched up my makeup but I was surprised that I didn't really need any touch ups, just a little reapplication of my lipstick (which she just used lip liner with a gloss on top). I did not decide to use airbrush makeup because it was an additional $50. In the end I am glad I did not use the airbrush because I could not tell the difference between airbrush/non airbrush within the bridesmaids. My makeup stayed on all night and even pictures taken at midnight looked just as good as 8am. Lakisha even gave the bride a little container with the lip color she used so she could reapply throughout the night. She also used all MAC makeup which is my favorite! Hair: 2 stars. Mack styled the bridal party's hair. Again, I was the first so it was important that my hair style not only make it throughout the day, ceremony and reception, but we also had the added bonus of rain. I really had no ideas what I wanted for my hair and the bride's only request was that the bridesmaids get an updo. I spoke to Mack about styles I like in my hair (I mentioned I like a side braid or braids in general) and she suggested a sexy, romantic hairstyle with loose curls. Sounded great to me! She curled my hair and I could tell that she was playing around with it to see exactly where it would fall. In the end, my hair looked great, lasted all day and I received a ton of compliments. She even curled the few pieces in the front before she left as a touch up and applied a ton of hairspray. Unfortunately some of the other girls did not have such a pleasant experience with Mack. She did have a bit of an attitude with some of the girls and a bit of an ego. One of the clients was not happy with her hair and instead of explaining that the hairstyle the client wanted wouldn't work, she just did what she wanted to do. When confronted about the hairstyle (which in my opinion was really bad..) she had an attitude but agreed to restyle the hair. The second hairstyle was much better and the client was happier. Mack does good hair, that's obvious. I was just taken aback by the unprofessional nature. The total for my hair and makeup was $165 (lashes were an extra $20) and only cash or check was accepted.

Second time taking my boys to see Kelsey. Both times she did not disappoint taking her time and delivering the funky cute boy types of styles that few can execute as well. I'll be going back to see her myself! So nice to have a place to walk to in the 'hood!

Mackenzie also offers free bang trims which is great because I hate making a mess of them trying to do it myself.

First off, the place feels big. Has nice calming music playing in the background so it's a pleasant experience visiting and even sitting in the chair for some time. The wash was about the same length of time as a wash from other places here in Chinatown, but somehow it was significantly more enjoyable. The people here know what they're doing, and my scalp feels much better than it did before, and I didn't even know if was feeling anything before. Cut was ~30 minutes, and $28 + tip. Overall, it's on the pricier end of what I've experienced so far in Chinatown, although not by much. However, the quality of the cut was much better than others. In other places, it feels a bit more rushed or cursory, but I felt like I was getting focused attention on my cut. He spent a lot of it actually in touch up and layering, which was good attention to detail. Honestly one of the best cuts I've gotten in Chinatown. Definitely beats out in quality over other mainstays like Kevin's, but at a slightly higher price point.

It's scary to try a new hair salon, but Salon JKU put all my fears to rest with a very positive,…read morerelaxing, competent, and friendly haircut experience. After trying another high-rated salon in Philly and having a hairdresser try and fail to thin out my very thick hair for two hours, I did some research and came across Salon JKU. Even though they don't don't have an online booking platform, it was fairly easy to make an email inquiry, then book a time within the week over the phone. I booked with Amelia, and was really glad I did. She asked a lot of good questions about what I was looking for, then talked me through what she was going for. I get my hair cut every 6 months, so I was really just looking for someone to take out weight and give my hair some shape. Amelia gave me a wonderful short haircut with a lot of movement and texture. Her cut was meticulous and she took out an incredible amount of weight, yet maintained volume and body. After our discussions about my typical haircare routine, she gave me a cut that looks good without any styling. I really appreciated that, because sometimes the cut looks amazing after it's all blown out, but it's not a look that I can ever recreate at home. A few days after my appointment, someone asked me how I styled my hair, and I told them I didn't style it at all. They couldn't believe it because it visually had so much volume! The pricing is higher than other places that I have been in Philly (I paid $100 + tip), but in my opinion, it was totally worth it for one of the best haircuts I've received.

So I went on the phila queens Facebook group and posted for Asian hair stylist recommendations for both cut and color and someone kindly recommended salon JKU to me and after looking at their Instagram and their stylist personal Instagram's I decided that this was the best salon for Asian hair given a lot of the stylist are of Asian descent. I got a full head balayage done by Memmi (@coloristmemmi) and haircut done by Chris Sotos. I cannot express enough how pleased I am with the results. PLEASE note this does not mean the salon is specialized in Asian hair only. I was the only Asian client in the salon yesterday. You definitely don't HAVE to be Asian to come here lol I just really really wanted my hair done by someone of Asian descent since I've never tried that before. Anyway, Memmi did such a good job and was so pleasant to talk to while she was doing my hair she really is an interesting person with such a cool backstory. Same goes for Chris, who I had many things in common with. I cannot wait to return to the salon for my next cut and or color. PLEASE take the time to see the huge transformation my hair underwent in the photos attached to this review. And also please check out their Instagram @salonjku because you will instantly want to go there too, like me. And wow I'm glad I did. they do outstanding work here thank you so much team for making my hair look amazing for the first time in my life.

The stylist was polite enough when I was welcomed in. I told her that I wanted my hair trimmed with…read moremy hair covering my ears, and the top blended in with the sides. She smiled and agreed, and started cutting. In no time at all, she had cut the hair on one side of my head above my ear, which was the opposite of what I asked for, as I have a deformed right ear from decades of combat sports competition, and I wanted it concealed. As she had already ruined my hair on one side, I bit my tongue as she made the other side match it. I was absolutely furious, but what can a stylist do once they've taken too much off? Absolutely nothing. Now I am stuck with a haircut where my deformed ear is visible for the whole world to see because the stylist decided to give me that haircut that she wanted to give me instead of the one that I asked for. I paid for my haircut with a card and departed in a polite manner, but the moment I hit the sidewalk, I could no nothing but scream profanity as the realization that I couldn't cover my deformed ear kicked in. Now I am not only out $18, but I am stuck with a haircut which leaves me open to yet more questions along the lines of "What's wrong with your ear?" [Edit, I called the place and she offered me a refund, but this doesn't undo the damage she did to my personal appearance. I'll take the refund, but this review stands.] I grew the sides of my hair longer specifically to hide that ear, and the stylist decided that she knew better than me where my haircut was concerned, and forced her personal preferences onto my head. That stylist is very fortunate that I have superior control over my temper, because she has left me feeling disfigured with the haircut she gave me, and now that I'm home and trying to style this mess, I see that she couldn't even manage to trim my bangs straight, and the hair on one side is not symmetrical with the hair on the other side. With the mess she left me with, with my deformed ear exposed, I might just shave my head instead of putting up with this terrible thing she did to my head. I am so humiliated that I don't even want to be seen in public looking like this. I went in feeling good about myself and looking forward to the haircut I asked for, and I left with my self-esteem in the gutter. I get upset every time I catch my refection and see what she did to my appearance. I can't go out looking like this. In short, she was absolutely incompetent & unprofessional in providing a haircut according to the very simple instructions I gave her. She shouldn't be permitted to cut hair, and if she has a state license for cutting hair, it should be revoked. The only reason she's getting one star is because I can't give her zero stars. Attached to this review, you'll see two photos detailing how she couldn't even manage to cut my hair evenly. I could have gotten a better cut from a landscaper with a weed-whacker. There is absolutely no excuse for this, and no apology or refund can do undo the damage. I'll have to wear a hat until my hair covers my deformed ear again. Thanks to a stylist who doesn't listen, I get to wear a hat to cover my deformed ear now. As a craftsman and a business owner, I can tell you that this is not how a professional renders a service to a client. **Update** I spoke with the stylist on the phone a short time ago about the refund she told me she would give me, and instead of telling me when I could come down & get it, she began making all manner of excuses as to why she shouldn't refund my money. This is the kind of experience you can expect to have with this hair stylist: first she will ruin your hair, then she will justify her poor work and back-peddle out of any refund she's already offered you. I should have looked at the other 1-Star reviews of this place, because it seems that those people all had a very similar experience to mine. As a small business owner myself, I'm very enthusiastic about supporting small businesses, but not if they're run by incompetent, unprofessional people who refuse to accept accountability for the damage they do, or offer fair compensation in return for those damages.
