There are several small lakes, one of which has a beach and other activities such as paddle boats. There are two different entrances to the park, which helps spread visitors out on really busy days like weekends. What a beautiful day! But I wonder how often people fall into the lake. I also wonder how deep the lake is. I also wonder if it's possible to be trapped underwater if your kayak flips over. In the end, I decided to kick it on the sandy beach and wave at my family as they happily paddled on the lake. They had a great time kayaking. I had a great time not kayaking. Like Hot Chocolate says: Everyone's a winner, baby. Kayaks are either single-person or double, and we used one of each. There are very few instructions given, which was a little alarming to me. (You mean you just assume we know what we're doing?!) But fortunately, my family knew what they were doing, so they didn't need much instruction to get themselves out on the water. As you paddle around the lake, you pass the Millennium Park beach and splash pad, plus little islands here and there. There is about four miles of shoreline to explore. I was told that the lake was nice and calm, and that it was a pleasant time on the water. We rented kayaks, but Millennium Park Boat Rentals also offers canoes, paddle boats and stand-up paddle boards to rent. Keep in mind that rentals are seasonal -- this place is only open from Memorial Day-ish to Labor Day-ish.

We visited Macatawa Boat House this past week while staying in Holland, MI. Their website didn't…read morelist an address for the shop, but the directions were quite clear. They are located on Lake Macatawa, on Ottawa Beach Road, just across from the campground for RVs and next to a small little beach. We got to the boathouse right about as it opened at 10am, and only waited a few minutes to get service, due to the large group ahead of us that was being helped. They went out in single and double kayaks, which it looked like there were plenty of at the time. No reservations were required, and we didn't make any, so I was glad to see so much equipment there. We asked for paddleboards and got a basic tutorial on their use after we mentioned we had only tried to paddleboard once before. We were asked how long we wanted the boards for, and when we responded about an hour, a beautiful route was suggested to us, and we were told it would be about an hour there and back at a leisurely pace. She was right - we hit the time mark pretty true, and the way there and back was so pretty on a pretty calm lake. The employee asked if we wanted her to put our car keys, wallets, etc. in a lockbox she had at the boathouse, so we wouldn't have to worry about them, which I thought was really nice. She also told us the parking in the lot next to the boathouse would require a beach parking pass, but there are two spots available for patrons (if you can snag them), or there's free 3 hour parallel parking on Ottawa Beach Road. Our total cost was $40 for two one hour paddleboard rentals, which was pretty reasonable and a fun way to spend a morning. Do visit Macatawa Boat House to rent paddleboards or kayaks if you're in Holland. We had a great experience.

This is a little gem of a campground that's pleasantly filled with comforts and modern amenities. The campground itself is very small, but it's quiet, & has a steady body of water. I will be staying here again. I spent the weekend sitting in my hammock and enjoying hearing the water. 5/6 of the cabins face the water just as an fyi, so it's like a private paradise. The town of SoHa is really fun too and a great place to wine, dine, & explore. The cabins are basic and rustic with one plug in to charge your electronics. There is one light in there but it does get dark at night. Bring a nightlight. The queen bunk beds are great and comfortable. I would say more like 2-3 people could comfortably sleep in a cabin due to space and the cabins get hot at night! There's showers, there's toilets, there's cabins- oh my! The showers run on a unique token system. 1 token=$1=3 minutes of hot, private, shower. Tokens are purchased on site. the showers are game changers because they're open 24 hours with cameras outside so the owners monitor who goes in/out and your safety. As a queer person, I felt comfortable & safe at this campground.

I am giving two stars to encourage…read morethe owners/managers/staff to be more forthcoming about the extremely hazard conditions presented at the end of the float. After our fun, relaxing trip my grandson, and I saw what we had been told to watch for when it's time to disembark. What wasn't communicated was that you will have ZERO way to steer or maneuver your tubes LEFT toward the boat launch / pickup point. * as an older woman - never floated before, I and my grandson were put in a dangerous situation when the SUPER STRONG CURRENT took us past the point where we were told to get out. The shallow, gentle river ends right where you need to be able to control or "drive the tube" to the left riverbank. We were in the middle attempting to go left when the crazy fast current grabbed our tubes and shot us out to the rough, deep water. If it hadn't been for some very brave and kind river visitors, our day might have ended very differently. One person attempted to swim to us and couldn't make it again, due to the current being so strong. I had to make the decision to jump out of my tube, hoisting one arm around it, swim while pulling the three tubes containing our cooler in one, my young grandson in the other toward the rocky shore past the exit point. Swimming against that river current released adrenaline you read about - when people lift cars off people! There is ZERO way I am strong enough or a good enough swimmer to do what I did. Two women in kayaks (angels really ) rowed to us. If they had not been there.... Right when they were I'm afraid to think what might have happened. One of them allowed me to lean on their kayak to rest. We finally were able to exit the river on someone's private property and walk back to the pickup vehicle. While one of them hauled our tubes back to the launch with their kayak. Please know that the exit point is treacherous on the 2.5 hour float. If you are not experienced, if you are not a strong swimmer - BRING A PADDLE - so you have some control of the tube when you need it. I MAY NEVER FLOAT AGAIN. but if I do, I now know the questions to ask and what to bring with me. The lady at the desk and the young man who picked us up were both very friendly. While she did impart the importance of where we needed exit the river, a stern warning to FIRST TIMERS, or older folks about the danger that lies ahead and a complete inability to "steer left" is absolutely warranted! Please be safe out there! * in response to the owners response; it absolutely has happened before. The three women who assisted us told me "always bring a paddle when tubing or, rent a kayak, so you have some control". Quite possible it has never happened to a writer before. I write - so an honest review to help others be safe felt necessary.
