These people checking me in and telling me safety information are incredibly young! Will they be able to save me and my family if our kayaks flip over and we fall into the lake? Wow! What a beautiful day! But I wonder how often people fall into the lake. I also wonder how deep the lake is. I also wonder if it's possible to be trapped underwater if your kayak flips over. In the end, I decided to kick it on the sandy beach and wave at my family as they happily paddled on the lake. They had a great time kayaking. I had a great time not kayaking. Like Hot Chocolate says: Everyone's a winner, baby. Kayaks are either single-person or double, and we used one of each. There are very few instructions given, which was a little alarming to me. (You mean you just assume we know what we're doing?!) But fortunately, my family knew what they were doing, so they didn't need much instruction to get themselves out on the water. As you paddle around the lake, you pass the Millennium Park beach and splash pad, plus little islands here and there. There is about four miles of shoreline to explore. I was told that the lake was nice and calm, and that it was a pleasant time on the water. We rented kayaks, but Millennium Park Boat Rentals also offers canoes, paddle boats and stand-up paddle boards to rent. Keep in mind that rentals are seasonal -- this place is only open from Memorial Day-ish to Labor Day-ish.

Friend, you've found the right review for YOU! My wife, 17-year-old son and I traveled up to Grand Haven on a whim this week, never having been here before but with the specific intent of trying out kayaking. Now, I have Kayaked before...I was about 12...so 36 years ago. My city-raised son and land-locked wife had never done such a thing in their lives. So, we started looking. After reading the reviews of a few places, I was attracted to Guys for a couple of reasons: 1. I'm a sucker for a story about a guy retiring from a life and retail and opening a kayak business on the rivers he loves. 2. Another review mentioned he had a kayak that fit a large person (I am one such person). 3. He specifically mentioned river kayaking...which is perfect for a newbie who isn't experienced keeping themselves moving. After all, if you get tired of paddling, you can just let the river take you where it will. Guy runs the business out of his house, but you'll never go in...you don't need to. We met in the yard, I PayPal'd him our fee (only $25 each) and we got back in our van to follow him to the landing spot...where we left our vehicle, climbed in his van, and he took us to the launch up river. Guy knows this town, but he really knows these rivers. We got a full briefing on what to expect, how to use the equipment, how long it should take --"the river's running about 4.5mph right now...it was 6mph last week...so it'll be a longer trip unless you really paddle". He then made sure we had a dry-box for a phone and wallet (just in case) and offered my son a ball cap since he forgot his and made sure my bald head had sunscreen, which I had forgotten. Then he launched us and away we went. The trip downstream was about 2 hours, and 15 minutes in my tech-geek son-sans-cell-phone says "We really need to do this more often" the trip was already worth it. The rest of the trip downstream was idylic and so much fun. When we got to the end (Guy put out a sign for us to land), Guy himself was there and taking photos for us. He helped us out of the boats (which I needed after two hours) and we got in our van and left. Guy has made this trip worthwhile on his own with his service and hospitality, and my family had a fantastic time. I can not recommend him and his business enough! Thank's Guy!!!

They are located on Lake Macatawa, on Ottawa Beach Road, just across from the campground for RVs and next to a small little beach. We got to the boathouse right about as it opened at 10am, and only waited a few minutes to get service, due to the large group ahead of us that was being helped. They went out in single and double kayaks, which it looked like there were plenty of at the time. No reservations were required, and we didn't make any, so I was glad to see so much equipment there. We asked for paddleboards and got a basic tutorial on their use after we mentioned we had only tried to paddleboard once before. We were asked how long we wanted the boards for, and when we responded about an hour, a beautiful route was suggested to us, and we were told it would be about an hour there and back at a leisurely pace. She was right - we hit the time mark pretty true, and the way there and back was so pretty on a pretty calm lake. The employee asked if we wanted her to put our car keys, wallets, etc. in a lockbox she had at the boathouse, so we wouldn't have to worry about them, which I thought was really nice. She also told us the parking in the lot next to the boathouse would require a beach parking pass, but there are two spots available for patrons (if you can snag them), or there's free 3 hour parallel parking on Ottawa Beach Road. Our total cost was $40 for two one hour paddleboard rentals, which was pretty reasonable and a fun way to spend a morning. Do visit Macatawa Boat House to rent paddleboards or kayaks if you're in Holland. We had a great experience.

The town of SoHa is really fun too and a great place to wine, dine, & explore. The cabins are basic and rustic with one plug in to charge your electronics. There is one light in there but it does get dark at night. Bring a nightlight. The queen bunk beds are great and comfortable. I would say more like 2-3 people could comfortably sleep in a cabin due to space and the cabins get hot at night! There's showers, there's toilets, there's cabins- oh my! The showers run on a unique token system. 1 token=$1=3 minutes of hot, private, shower. Tokens are purchased on site. the showers are game changers because they're open 24 hours with cameras outside so the owners monitor who goes in/out and your safety. As a queer person, I felt comfortable & safe at this campground.

I browsed the website beforehand and appreciated the super detailed and helpful FAQ and information. I'd never kayaked or canoed on a river before, so I didn't really know what to expect, but it was a lot of fun. You can bring food and drinks for your trip, and they sell water, ice, and small snacks. You can also buy water shoes (helpful for tubing) and koozies that you can hang around your neck (which would have been useful for kayaking). Once we were all checked in, we loaded up in the bus and they drove us to the starting point where our kayaks and canoes were waiting. The trip was mostly leisurely (a tandem kayak experience may be a test of some relationships, haha) and we saw tons of wildlife: green herons, great blue herons, turtles, and three bald eagles! It wasn't too busy or crowded on the river, which was nice. It was $66 for the double kayak rental, which includes paddles, life jackets/cushions, and transportation to the entry point. You can also bring your own kayak or canoe and they'll transport it for a charge. Fishing boats, tubes, and rafts are also available to rent. A fun summer activity!

We wanted something more relaxing with more to look at than just water and a lake shore. Lakeshore Kayak Rental gave us exactly what we wanted. The water was warm, to our surprise, and the trip was so tranquil and calm, with all kinds of close up wildlife. We saw turtles within minutes of being out, there were bullfrogs, otters, blue herons, swans (with babies!) geese, ducks, and at times, you could see fish in the water. The price was great at $45 for 3 hours, the staff was friendly and very helpful in advising us where the good places to go were and gave us accurate times on how long it would take us--we were able to stick to the plan on timing while having plenty of time to stop and watch the wildlife and relax. Spring Lake paddle boarding was the highlight of our trip and is on the top of our list for next tine we come back!
