I started coming to this spot back when it was a quaint little 4 room service spa…read more Now it's got plentiful more rooms, enough staff to serve a kingdom and way more services I'd like to try...when I win the lotto. It's a full service spa, you get a locker with robe, slippers and sauna access. No pool. Single vanity area with hair dryer, q-tips, hair ties, etc. Bring your own brush. I'll review what I have tried: Facials - man, no one does it better. They tuck you into an electronically warmed blanket. I like my facials to really do the nitty gritty, get all my pores cleansed and tightened. This means extractions. And if you have no idea what extractions are like, well maybe you don't want to. If you do, you'll know how tedious and painful it can be. Well S.E.S has it down to an art. They have special tools for extractions that they constantly clean. I know this because they constantly spray down their tools with alcohol. I can hear it and smell it while in between being in pain. They exfoliate - steam - extract - cleanse - mask - tone. The whole shebang and they don't even charge you extra like some other places. In between waiting times while your face is soaking up the mask? They massage your hands. Body scrub - pretty neat concept and makes your whole body feel like you just came from the womb. Seriously. The only thing that stops me from getting this service more often is the fact that I have to lay there naked while two women scrub me all over while I am laying in an open capsule. After the scrub they close the capsule (head outside) and the water jets spray you down. There's a good resting period where it warms up like a sauna and you are totally encased in a good steam. There's light therapy that goes on so your body is illuminated in techno colored lights. The whole techie capsule thing is quite the experience. Weight loss - yes. I tried it. I could only bring myself to try it a handful of times. Hard to explain, they offer target area treatments, and hook a massage device up to a machine. There's light therapy added to the rolling device that they use and treat your choice of area for x amount of time. They log your measurements after every session. I effectively lost an inch (no I am not going to disclose where) but of course gained it all back in three fold. Not my fault they are across from a DQ. Massage - I've never heard of lumbar. I've never heard of pressure point massages. All I know is that it works and I always feel great afterwards. I'll leave it up to them to explain the sorcery behind all of that, but I will tell you that I can never stay away through a whole session. They won't make small talk if you don't want to. I love it. Yes, they do insurance claims. Eyelash extensions - no, they aren't advertising much of this like other places. I'm guessing because they are so extremely booked for extensions they don't need to. Natural looking, yup. Longer fuller doll looking, yup. The technician who is also the owner, Sandy has been doing this before all the lash places became a thing. Why she never got recognition as one of the first people in Calgary to be doing extensions is beyond me. She knows her stuff. Perfect set all the time. Parking is situated at the back, through the alley. It shares a small lot with the condos upstairs and another spa right next door (I don't understand this). You can enter from the back by ringing the doorbell. There's also street parking, free on the weekends. Review #4 of Yelp's 30 Day Challenge 2012

Quick summary: Sandy at European Spa performed my facial three weeks ago and I have permanent…read morescaring on my cheeks from her overly deep extractions! I would not recommend this place to anyone. I had clear, acne-free skin without any scars prior to my visit. I am deeply disappointed. My experience: I frequent a different salon on a regular basis and never experienced scarring before. My skin was clear before my facial at European Spa and now I'm waiting for a visit to my dermatologist to hopefully remove the extraction scars. I have since cancelled future appointments and informed them of the situation, where I was not offered any solutions. During the facial, I noticed it was more painful than my regular visits with my other spa. Sandy even warned me that the next couple of extractions were going to be painful since they were deep. When the facial was finished, my face had many blood spots and was very red. I thought the dark spots would go away within a couple weeks, but it has now been three weeks and my scaring is permanent. After further research, I've since learned "extractions are a good way to rid your skin of blackheads -- not whiteheads -- but don't let the aesthetician go too deep. A good practitioner will back away from anything not coming out easily." In sum, I do not recommend European Spa for facials.

I've never had a facial -unless you count the masks from the drugstore and bananas and whatnot that…read moreyou slather on your face with friends at a sleepover when you're 12. I've always had "bad" skin - acne, rosacea, eczema, allergies/hives, dryness/flakiness, oil-slicks - and I like to pick at it too (a big no-no, I'm aware, thanks). Given that my "sensitive" skin has never, and I mean never, responded well to anything I've put on it (pick any brand you can buy at Shoppers and I've tried it). I stopped buying skin care products all together about 5 years ago and have resorted to warm water + facecloth + sunscreen (zinc) when I'm outside.Oh ya, and I'm not a makeup lover - lately my coworkers are getting spoiled if I put on mascara. Fast forward to Skoah... I went in for a Facialicious, mostly on a whim because I was in Kensington at Wild& Raw and decided that with my new hair and nails (I have friends weddings coming up) that I should have "new" skin too. My "skin care trainer" greeted me promptly even though I was 5 minutes early. I was shown into the treatment room, which many other reviews go over: decent music, super cozy and warm bed, a little basket for your personal items, and a lip treatment on my pillow. She was very good with talking in calming tones, asking precise questions and explaining concisely what she was doing. I felt like there was probably 200x the amount of product on my face I have ever used. That being said, it wasn't goopy - it was really luxurious. I also like that the extractions were done thoroughly and it's my goal to not pick until my next appointment (6 weeks feels like forever - it's only been 1 day!). Because I haven't bought anything in years, I bought everything she used on me, knowing that if I needed to exchange anything I didn't feel was working right, I have the option to do that. The girls helped me come up with options for how to combine the products into different packages to maximize discounts and freebies. I got home and seriously couldn't stop looking in the mirror. No lines, no redness, no flakes, no oil-slicks. It looks like somebody Perfect365'ed my face in real time as I looked into the mirror. This morning, same thing. Thus far, I would highly recommend the facials and products. I'll do an update after my next visit in 6 weeks :D Tips: Don't be in a hurry. Ask questions. Enjoy! The only part of the Skoah experience I dislike to this point in time is the names of everything; I feel uncomfortable saying most of the names.

(Trust me...I know I'm Chinese) The room was dirty more towards the sink where all the products were located. The beautician used kleenex to wipe off the products rather than a hot towel because they do not do laundry in this spa. ALSO...they DO NOT CHANGE THE SHEETS OR TOWELS USED FROM THE PREVIOUS customer! How do I know...when I was paying the GST I saw a lady clean the room up by just making the bed so it looks good rather than ripping off the sheets and changing them. The facial was also not comfortable...the lights were left on and during the masks and heat steam session the lady left the room rather than give massages out. I personally do think it was even worth the $37 I paid for Groupon.

It was one of the poorest facials I have ever had, and I've had a lot. If I had paid full price for this, I would have been extremely upset. I addition to Mabel's comments, I will also add that the woman performing the facial, rushed though each step as though she was in a race. It was neither relaxing nor pleasant. The facial 'massage' if we can call it that, was quite weird, and she did it as though she did not want to be touching people's faces. I won't go back, obviously. Save your money.
