I randomly came across Lighthouse while doing an internet search for renting a Glidecam camera rig and my interest was peaked by their low rates. Naturally, having never heard of or rented from them before, I gave a call just to get a lay of the land, see how they work. I was somewhat dumbfounded when the guy who spoke to me was belligerent almost from the get go (turns out, unbelievably, he was one of the owners of the place, his name was Thibault.) Asking normal professional questions - I was either cut off or spoken over, the guy telling me multiple times that he "didn't need to explain how he did business". Umm, not the best way to address a potential client. These are all very bad signs and despite all the other reviews here I would steer very clear. I wanted to write this as a warning for others. A rental house that is not professional will bite you in the behind in the long run. AVOID.

When I was shopping around to look for a 5D Mark II to rent back in September, I couldn't believe…read moreat how much some outfits were charging for a 4 year old camera body. I went and checked out all the usual big names (Adorama, CSI, foto care), but I felt as though I should be able to get more for my money. That, combined with the motivation from having a tight production budget (understatement of the century) lead me to stumbling upon Lighthouse. I will admit that I was initially skeptical about getting a 5D (from a shop I've never heard of) with a 32GB CF card when other companies were charging the same, or much more, for only a 8GB card. But in the end, I had no choice. All the other outfits had either rented out the 5D already, or the cost was too hard to justify. So I went ahead and set up an account with them, and came in the next day to pick up the 5D along with a shotgun mic, tripod, light, and light stand. I could not have been happier with the customer service. Thibaut was very patient with me as I threw a ton of questions at him on how to maximize the production quality on such a small budget. I think I actually like that Lighthouse is still relatively unknown amongst the other camera rental shops since I would have never been able to get a 5D on such short notice otherwise. But all good things come to an end I suppose. If you're reading this, then you're most likely debating to rent from them or not, but with their competitive prices and their healthy supply of equipment, how could you not?** ** Unless, of course, you're a Nikon fanboy like I am :). Unfortunately, this is purely a Canon shop as far as DSLRs go.

The production staff were very communicative and very on top of things. I didn't have to worry once with them. After doing an extensive search on AV companies around New York, we settled on 1 Way Audio Visual. Miguel was the most responsive and most proactive person to provide a timely quote that fit our budget. He was willing to work with the demands of our CEO to integrate with the in-house AV team at the conference venue. The day of the event, his team arrived and setup on-time. During the event, they needed a little more hand-holding than my preferred vendor back home, which is probably standard for AV companies and definitely something I take for granted. I could have been more organized in giving more specific direction about what we expected from the technicians during the program, so that's just a reminder to anyone who reads this review. To my knowledge, 1 Way AV hires contractors to work their gigs instead of having the own in-house crew. Our sound technician was Peter, and he was phenomenal. He stood out above the rest of the staff members in providing professional service to our speakers and staying on top of the schedule provided. I didn't interact too much with the rest of the 1 Way AV crew. After a few hiccups in the beginning of our program and a screen resolution mishap throughout the day, everything operationally was smooth sailing.

The booking experience was pretty easy over email and AV NYC seemed responsive. Price was more affordable than a vendor I had used previously in the city so I thought I would give it a shot. However when I arrived to the venue I realized the AV never arrived even though they were supposed to be set up an hour prior. When I called the number to inquire where the equipment and labor we booked was, Dane from AV NYC said we hadn't paid. I knew this wasn't right so forwarded him on the paid statement we received. Somehow even with their own document he didn't know what we ordered. After multiple phone calls, he indicated they would 'try' to arrive in time for our event. That was a point of unnecessary stress for me for an important event. They did eventually arrive in time, set up only for me to tell them they had set up in the wrong room. Post-event it took three weeks and multiple follow up emails to finally get a response that they apologize for their own issues. I would not use them again. Coordinating events is hard enough but having this amount of confusion for something pretty simple was incredibly stressful and unnecessary.

After explaining budgetary restrictions (because we were shooting a low budget short film), they agreed to work with our budget which was great. For drop off, we were admittedly and unexpectedly late. I had reached out to them with updates. They then reached out to me telling me that there were going to charge me for an extra day. I would warn any low budget production from using them, as they will not give you grace. After investigating the delay, I called them and explained the situation to their team. I was met with rude and sarcastic attitudes and passive aggressive responses insinuating that I may have absconded with their equipment. The vendors while initially friendly, turned sour, passive aggressive and unkind. While I understand that the situation was not ideal for them, I would've appreciated a more customer friendly interaction than the one I was given. As a producer in the industry who has experience shooting commercials, documentaries, and films, I will unfortunately not be working with them again.

We put in a request for limited equipment, some camera filters and a car mount. My DP put in the request and I filled out our paperwork. When I sent back all documentation, Ted Clench said he had "red flags" because my New York DL address did not match my credit card billing address (I just moved). When I offered to send him my passport as a second ID to verify my identity, that was not accepted. He said there'd been a lot of fraud with rentals from abroad (my employer is abroad but I'm in NY). When I offered to rent the filters and mount as in individual and take full financial responsibility via a hold on my credit card for the value of the equipment, I was told that wouldn't be acceptable. When I offered to come in and verify my identity in person, he told me that wouldn't make a difference. When I asked to speak with Michael, the owner, to explain my situation, I was barred from that as well. For every possible means in which I could verify my identity and cover the costs of buying the equipment outright in order to rent, Ted refused each option I offered him. I understand if a company is skittish of renting due to past bad experiences, but if I'm suggesting to come in person and allow a hold on my credit card for the entire value of the equipment I'm renting (above just the rental fees), that is sufficient for any other reputable company. So be forewarned -- you too could be turned away from renting, throwing your production into chaos.
