The whole thing felt rather slimy. We had paid 27 euro each for two 7-day passes, and used them for two days. During those two days, the Metro served our transportation needs well. Returning to our room at the end of the second day, we were stopped by Control, who noticed that we had neither pictures nor signatures on our passes. They explained that the passes aren't valid without pictures and signatures. We explained that nobody had ever mentioned that requirement when we purchased them. They pointed out that it was written on the pass, and in the same breath, explained that it was written in French, so we couldn't read it. I figured, having pointed out that we couldn't read the instructions to add a photo would qualify as grounds for them to make an exception in our case. However, they fined us 35 euro each for the infraction (130% of the original cost of the passes). The law is in place to protect the system from people sharing passes. We were not guilty. We were fined for not understanding, and this was perfectly clear to the persons fining us. The punishment does not fit the crime. Far from us scamming the system, it felt like the Metro was scamming American tourists. read more
