I feel like so many Farmer's Markets have turned into flea markets, with way too many vendors selling clothing, jewelry, pyramid scheme crap, and businesses offering crappy give aways in exchange for your contact information. The Yellowstone Valley Farmer's Market has actual farmers selling fruits, veggies, flowers, plants, meat, chicken, honey, baked goods, etc. You know you're truly supporting local businesses when shopping here. Some of our favorite finds so far have been local Ambrosia (peaches and cream) corn, hand made tamales (sold frozen to heat at home), the meat sticks from Ranch House Meat Market, chokecherry lemonade from Burnt Bean Ranch (only $1), the muffins and donuts from Heiko's Bakery, salsa from Kenny D's....and so many more!!! We are also buying beef in various cuts from the local beef sellers trying to decide who we're ultimately going to purchase a quarter cow from as it's important to us to buy local for things like that. Everyone who is selling something is so incredibly nice! They're all willing to answer questions and offer suggestions, and the prices are totally acceptable! It can get crowded, and some vendors run out of food as the day goes on, but everyone shopping is pleasant, patient, and there's no sense of anything but civility and kindness. Having just moved to Billings, it's so nice to add something so wholesome and wonderful to our weekend routine. See you next Saturday!! (It runs until the 1st Saturday in October)

I first came across Swanky Roots at the Farmers Market on the West End. After seeing all the…read moredifferent kinds of lettuce, and being impressed with how good it was, I decided to visit their greenhouse and see what else might be there. While social distancing rules have suspended the in-person tours, you can still peek through the window from the main shop and see the rows of hydroponics. Inside the shop are coolers with various types of lettuce or herbs, and the availability depends on what is ready for harvest. It won't be the same thing every visit. In addition, Swanky Roots carries product and general knickknacks from local places. I've tried two of the different types of lettuce, the Butter and the Oakleaf, and some of the tomatoes. I can see why the Butter lettuce is popular -- the name suits it, for being a very smooth lettuce, almost like spinach, but without that slight bitterness. The tomatoes -- perhaps it wasn't a fair comparison -- but I had some tomatoes from the market and some from Swanky Roots. Aw geez, there was simply no comparison. I could make the argument they were two different kinds of tomato and that's why the taste was so different, but realistically, I don't think that would even explain it. The Swanky roots tomato actually had some flavor. If you see any Swanky Roots produce, take a chance and give them a try. You might be pleasantly surprised.

The store has wide aisles, great selections, and sometimes with hard to find brands you won't see elsewhere. Don't be fooled, though, Albertsons is not an inexpensive store, but If you're on a budget there's usually something on sale in the category you're seeking. The corporation that owns Albertsons has their own brand of organic products that save people a trip to the other store in town. The employees have all been outstandingly nice, at least in the cheese, deli and meat departments. The checkout employees are not particularly diligent about noting sale tagged items, but as long as you're paying attention they'll fix it. Overall, it's a chain store so you know what you'll find, but you might also come across a surprise or two.

It's a family owned shop with fresh cut meats, mostly beef and pork, but there is also various kinds of bacon, deli meats, jerky, brats, and sausages. There's usually a special of some kind. From time to time, they have buffalo meat and chicken. They also will do deer processing. During the lunch hours, they have a special highlighting the meats -- a sandwich, a slider, maybe a loaded baked potato -- something small, but always tasty. It should be enough to convince you their meats are equally good -- and they are. Friendly group of people, good place to get local Montana meats for dinner, and at lunch, have a small snack.
