I am thrilled to write a review to address and counter two negative reviews I just found while…read morerecommending Academic Access's services to yet more friends - after 100% of those that worked with Joan were as THRILLED as our family with their experience. Joan has a unique ability to develop separate authentic relationships with students and parents through her very genuine approach, straight-forward communication with a principled and effective approach honed by decades of experience. This also includes not shying away from having the difficult conversations not always easily received by children nor parents based on a wealth of experience and conducted with grace. The value of this unique skill can not be overstated and helps pave the way to a sometimes new and very necessary communication cadence within families as our children begin their journey to becoming truly independent adults. Academic Accesses approach is thoughtfully constructed with purposeful nuance in every facet of the work. I particularly love the essay writing team/writing muse/editorial process. It gave me the confidence to not dig into my children's essays which would have resulted in them being MY essays - a situation admissions departments see straight through. With two very different children their final products were radically different and both made me weep providing a different type of opportunity to truly "see" my children in all their glorious blossoming independent ways. Our entire experience was a gratefully received gift that not only resulted in both of our children being admitted ED to their first choice schools (both schools that we as parents recommended, but our kids wanted nothing to do with until they heard that Joan also enthusiastically recommended these schools from her own purview) but quite literally saved our sanity during a process that due to very normally teenage growth cadence is naturally a combative time between parents and children. I will forever be grateful to Joan and her team. I 100% recommend without reservation and would happily talk to anyone at anytime.

Filling out college applications and writing essays is like a deep dive into something you've never…read moreexperienced before. Academic Access was the perfect choice to help our daughter successfully chart a course and navigate these deep waters. From the beginning - Joan's familiarity with an enormous range of different schools helped our daughter to discover schools that checked all the boxes of things she wanted in a school, providing her with schools she'd not even considered. Throughout the process, Joan and her team were there every step of the way - providing guidance, instilling confidence, and helping our daughter find just the right unique and interesting essay information to share for a strong application and a positive outcome. The stress that comes with applications was minimized by having experts available whenever she had questions or needed help. The most valuable part (to me as a parent), was that the experts were also able to guide her without sounding like a "critical parent", thus keeping peace in our home throughout the process. Joan and her team kept our daughter on track with application deadlines, while keeping stress levels at a very comfortable level, and our daughter was accepted and now attends one of her top two choices. Since our experience with Academic Access, I have recommended Joan to at least 7 or 8 friends (I've lost count!) whose students have all had similar experiences with great outcomes! Thanks Joan! Working with you was one of the best decisions we've ever made.

NCCL teachers are so loving and nurturing to our children and supportive to parents as well. I'm so…read moregrateful they are a part of our families' lives and a role model of compassion and positivity. Before we even had children, we knew we wanted a creative and compassionate environment for our children as they grew up. A place where their self-esteem and self-efficacy would bloom. We've found that and more at NCCL. It is such a wonderful community, and we are so appreciative to be a part of it! I do not know the specifics of the negative review below, but the school is small (10 kids per grade level) and does not have the resources of larger schools. I can only speculate that would be why outside help was encouraged for any behavioral issues.

I attended NCCL school from kindergarten to eighth grade, and I consider myself extremely lucky to…read morehave had that opportunity. The learning is fun, interactive, and centered around the abilities of the students, and the hands-on methods of teaching allowed me to understand and apply concepts to real-life situations. I never had to ask myself "Why does this matter?" The teachers there were/are like parents to me, and I knew that I could always come to them with any struggles I might be having, emotionally or academically. The environment is safe and nonjudgemental; my NCCL family has truly shaped me as a person. Although I have had struggles with anxiety since an early age, the staff has always cared for and supported me in even my loftiest goals. When I was in eighth grade, I told my writing teacher, Kate, that I wanted to write a novel by the end of the year, and with her help and constant reinforcement, I completed it. Now, I am an English major with a Writing Concentration at Gettysburg College (minors in Literature and Studio Art). I had a 4.5 GPA throughout high school, and I now have a 4.2 GPA in college. I am a published author, journalist, and artist, as well as the editor for our on-campus literary and art magazine. None of this would have been possible without the support and aid of the teachers at NCCL, who encouraged me to think deeply, and pursue my interests doggedly. NCCL is the most accepting community that I have ever had the privilege of entering, and the staff works hard to accommodate students and families. They have plentiful compassion and experience when it comes to working with children with learning disabilities, and the environment of the school itself is welcoming and supportive to all. This school is a family, and I was so lucky to be a part of it. I will be forever grateful for my time at NCCL.

I solicited Rachel's services for the birth of my second son, Griffin. Upon first meeting her I…read morefelt drawn to her calm demeanor and warm presence. She distributed an educational binder full of materials I found to be more honest and thorough than the information my OB had given me. For example, OB's won't distribute a list of medical interventions you may face during a hospital labor, but Rachel did. It was essential information I wish I was armed with during the hospital delivery of my first son. Emotionally, Rachel was very encouraging when I expressed doubts regarding my ability to tough-out a med-free labor. She helped instill the courage I needed to make the switch from the hospital to my local Birth Center. She helped me believe in myself and saw a strength in me I did not see. Physically, Rachel would have been an enormous help with pain management by providing soothing massage and counter pressure during labor. My labor was mercifully short, however, and I had to rely solely on my husband for pain relief during active labor. He did a great job providing this relief by utilizing the massage and counter pressure techniques that Rachel taught him. Thanks to her guidance, he was able to be an active participant in my labor instead of just a spectator! She was a calming, guiding voice during the pushing stage of my labor and very helpful with my initial breastfeed as well. Rachel will be all the things you need during the emotionally turbelent time of pregnancy and delivery. She will be a supportive friend, a motherly figure, an educator, an advisor, a listening ear, a guiding voice and a soldier ready to fight for you. She's a nurturing old soul with a backbone of steel. A beautiful doula both inside and out. You can't go wrong soliciting her services and I can't recommend her highly enough. I wish I had given myself the gift of a doula through my first labor!

I was referred to Rachel by my midwife since I had such bad anziety about labor. I was terrified of…read morethe pain as well as getting an epidural or an IV since I don't do well with needles. I'd cry thinking about having to deliver my baby and wasn't enjoying my pregnancy because of my anziety. My husband and I had VERY different views on labor. His answer to everything was. "Get an epidural, you'll be fine." He thought anyone who didn't want an epidural was crazy. He didn't see anything wrong with interventions and thought they were there and you should take full advantage of it. Originally I wasn't against interventions, I was just really scared of them because of the needles. Over the couple months of communicating with Rachel and reading the materials she suggested I decided I wanted to try to have a natural birth. My husband still maintained that his ideal labor would be a scheduled c section. With Rachel's help he finally was on board to give the natural birth a shot, although I'm pretty sure he didn't think it would actually happen. Rachel got through to him about the cycle of epdidural/pitocin and how once you start one intervention it just creates a snowball and odds are, you're getting more. I went into labor and I labored at home and got to the hospital at 10cm! After 2 hours of pushing, my daughter was born without any interventions! Rachel gave us the knowledge/tools to be able to labor at home as long as we did. I believe that made all the difference in being able to have a natural delivery. I would have had a VERY different labor if i wasn't for Rachel. At the hosptial she was great! With Rachel by my side I felt as if i could take on anything during labor. My husband is so happy we hired her. He said if we had another baby we'd do it the same way. She's worth every penny. Her posituve attitude can get you through anything! I think about my labor every day and couldn't be more happy with it!
