Chesterbrook Academy - Newtown Square has been the worst childcare experience of my 13 years as a mom. In our experience, the environment was cold, harsh, and deeply unsettling. When children are sad or crying, they are placed in a so-called "cuddle corner" and intentionally ignored--no one is allowed to speak to or comfort them until they stop crying. Teachers follow a strict "no response" approach, meaning kids who are screaming, throwing, or clearly distressed are simply ignored. The level of rudeness, judgment, and lack of warmth from staff has honestly left me bewildered. My child came home crying many days, saying the teachers yelled at them--and I personally witnessed teachers yelling at children right in front of me. Leaving your child in someone else's care is already incredibly hard. You expect compassion, patience, and basic emotional safety. That was not our experience here. I can't speak to other Chesterbrook locations, but Chesterbrook Academy in Newtown Square is one I would strongly urge parents to avoid. As the school invests essentially all their resources in high quality education and teacher support/ training and an unmatched outdoor classroom, they barely advertise or do any marketing. It gives the school a "hidden gem" vibe. The education my children get in the toddler program is phenomenal, and glancing at the Kindergarten work of the older students gets me so excited for the future. I observe my toddlers' language skills sky rocket, practical life and sense of discipline is incredible, and daily engagement with the school gardens and farm life is simply delightful. I've also seen work samples of the older student's math, writing, geography, art ... it's impressive! I'm an early childhood educator myself, and the authentic implementation of the Montessori curriculum at IMS West Chester is beyond anything I've observed at traditional & Montessori schools in Washington DC, Wilmington, DE, and another West Chester Montessori school. As an educator, it's very important to me that my kids go to a school where both lead and assistant teachers are happy, have opportunities for professional development, are well supported when inevitable challenges arise, and stick around from year to year. IMS West Chester checks all those boxes! And it shows through the genuine love and dedication the children receive from all teachers. The cherry on top is the annual art show!
