I wasn't even really looking for jewelry anymore, having gotten fed up with pushy salespeople. walking by Klondike Gold Rush Jewels, I paused because of all the Egyptian items in the windows. Most are the standard Tot and Nefertiti items common in tourist trinket collections. But there were some that were unique. I ended up going inside and Mo greeted myself and my friend very warmly. I asked about a piece with Isis on it, and she has not left my possession since. Mo was very personable, friendly, and absolutely one of the kindest people I have ever met. we stayed in his shop for more than a couple of hours, bought more than a few items from him, declined a ride back to the port (because he hadn't eaten either and we didn't want him closing in the middle of the cruise port day!) To say the least, I will forever bypass all the other jewelers in all of Skagway to come here in the future. The jewelry is beautiful, not the same as the chain store items, far more affordable, and Mo has not lied to us about any of the pieces we bought... which is HUGELY different from several other stores. I cannot recommend Klondike Gold Rush Jewels highly enough. There aren't enough words of glowing praise. Just go on your next trip and see for yourself.

Before we got back on our cruise ship, we saw that the museum was still open and wandered in. It was the late afternoon, so it wasn't too crowded. We were able to go through the exhibits and read through the signage without too many other people crowding around. And we also caught the last showing of the short documentary in the theater (4:00 PM start time), which lasted about 30 minutes. We learned a lot about the Alaskan Gold Rush from this movie. The entire experience was free. In the lobby, there are rangers to answer any questions, a small gift shop, and most importantly, a clean publish bathroom!

The museum is run by the National Park Service and does a great job of bringing the history to life. I especially enjoyed the film explaining how the discovery unfolded and how it transformed the region almost overnight. It's incredible to imagine the hardship people went through to get there in search of gold. Even Jack London made it up to the Klondike when he was only 20 years old, which adds another interesting layer to the story. Overall, a very well-presented and informative experience that's definitely worth a visit -- It's free.

The delightful worker, a true local gem, doesn't just recommend books; she share stories, anecdotes, and insight of the everyday life in the community. In a town where everyone knows everyone, this bookstore serves as more than just a place to buy books. It's a communal space and a hub where ideas are exchanged. We got a first hand experience seeing how the community interacts. We were able to better understand that the luxuries we take for granted are harder to come by in a remote town such as this. However, people here make due, and look out for each other. We came here on a cruise and are so glad we walked into this bookstore. We definitely recommend!

You could also buy a multicolored felt pig there. I made it. It was there for some time. I guess someone must have bought it, eventually, for I don't seem to have it anymore. Anyway. What I mean to say is, the Babbling Book is not like that. It is a real store, which makes a certain effort to provide things that its customers may actually want, and for that it is to be applauded. I think it's absolutely splendid that Haines now has a real bookstore, serving the needs of both the community and the tourists who pass through in the summer. It's a small store, but it makes good use of its space. If you're looking for something in particular, and it's not popular, you probably won't find it, but if you're just in a book mood, there's going to be something there worth buying, to take off with you and read in the rain in a tent above tree level, or in your house downtown in February, as the case may be.
