I loved the ambience of Lychee Lounge: hip, sophisticated, classy, elegant. All the tables were filled when I went- not surprised it was a Saturday night. My friend and I went up to the bar and ordered cocktails there. I ordered the signature lychee martini, because, well, I FREAKING LOVE LYCHEE. The cocktail is on the small side, but quality over quantity people. A cocktail will set you back $17. With my drink came two large lychee fruit on a stick; but when I bit into one, it was frozen! Maybe it's because lychees aren't in season, or it's meant to be like 'ice'.... Not sure, but fresh unfrozen lychees would have been nice! I definitely want to come back and try different cocktails and some food. read more

You know when you live in the neighborhood and there are a few places that just get passed by. My gal pals and I have been talking about LL and I finally got around to visiting them a few weeks ago on a Monday. They have $5 Tapas on Mondays! They were having a bartender cocktail making competition so the night was probably a bit different than most. I totally agree with Corrie because the Pavlova cocktail was the BEST! I should have just ordered those all night instead of trying out other cocktails because none of them lived up to PC (Not. Even. Close.). We enjoyed our tapas and they came out in a timely fashion. The sliders were tasty! I believe the menu changes weekly. I would have liked for the service to be better. We ended up going to the bar every time we wanted to order something which is a bit inconvenient. There was an event so I will say that was the excuse. First impression - this place was much smaller than I imagined. And the table we had reserved and been given was not the easiest to sit at because it's like an 8 seater communal table and there were four of us. You'd have to squeeze and slide/hop your way under the table as you couldn't exactly split the entire thing into two four-seater sections. Pity. It was also quite hot inside. Maybe I'm just being picky but I like feeling comfortable, what can I say. Service was good, friendly enough thanks to one of the girls there. Onto the food. I got the $10 fried chicken in watermelon and hot sauce. - the chicken was dry, overcooked and had no seasoning. I also got deep fried broccoli as a special surprise. - the little dipping serve of watermelon and hot sauce was more of a sour cream and sweet chilli flavour. I also got the thrice cooked chips in honey and chilli for $9 - these are hugely cut potato pieces but they had some flavour through them so it wasn't just bland potato - I don't think I tasted any honey. Or chilli The above two could have been much much better with seasoning and perhaps a sweet chilli glaze on the chicken. And definitely some sauce with the fries. As for cocktails, I had the famous pavlova (absolut vodka, tropical fruits, citrus and vanilla meringue) for $17. - like the venue, smaller than I imagined and for its price, that's a disappointment for me - loved the flavours, they worked really well together - don't know how to eat the meringue so I cut it up in tiny pieces so every sip had a piece of meringue haha So overall, I'd go back to try more cocktails but only for special occasions because they are quite small for their price. Definitely one of Brisbane's best cocktail bars, with a drinks list so large that you almost need a bookmark to get through it! They do all the classics and a swag of their own innovations, including their signature 'Lychee Martini' and interesting creations like the 'Chocolate Manhattan' and 'Pavlova' - an alcoholic interpretation of the classic Australian dessert featuring passionfruit-infused vodka. The decor channels Oriental inspirations, with Japanese-style screens and a feature wall with a gold leaf fish scale type effect that is reminiscent of a grandiose temple. Severed dolls' heads inserted into some of the light fittings add an edgy touch of Harajuku punk/gothic. I have to say I am a massive fan of this place. I have been here so many times and I know it is completely heinous that I am only now writing the review. Yes it is cramped. Yes, it can get incredibly busy. But that is why I love this place. Crammed in there with your pals, drinks everywhere, a little food, a little light and it all adds to the atmosphere. The staff here are really great. One night when there was newbie on and a few mistakes were made the manager was completely gracious, giving us our first round for free. We were there all night after that. I do suggest if you go as a group don't dick around with money, have one person put their credit card down and sort it out later. It makes life so much easier. I do this if I'm only going with one other person. Back to the drinks, there are divine. And as some people mentioned, they are strong. If it is a quality cocktail you want, strong is really the only way they come. They use quality liquor and they don't stiff you on the amount they put it. That's top service in my book. Of course try their signature lychee martini, they do it well as would be expected. Try everything that tickles your fancy, they can't put a foot wrong but if you really want to get crazy (or it someones birthday as was the case here) I suggest you purchase a shot of absinthe and take a good look at your head because when they roll that bad boy out...BOOM! (your head that is ) It comes out with this tower with what looks like an avenging angel standing at the top of it and these fancy cut out spoons and it all looks like they've chipped it straight off the roof of a gothic church in Romania somewhere. And the bartender sat down with us and talked to us about the absinthe we chose (deadly) and the way to prepare it (sugar) and drink it (fire). The venue is styled in an Asian theme with satins, florals and bamboo. There are intimate spaces and subdued lighting and a mural by street artists Drapl is a focal point. It's opium den meets street fighter chic. The Asian theme extends to the cocktails with perennial menu items such as my favourite, the Tahilander (white run, coconut, lime ginger beer & chilli). New additions included my choice of a Plum, Cherry & Jasmine Sour with two styles of pisco and cherry liqueur. Sharp and a little smoky, there was a sweet hit with the addition of a dark morello cherry. It was finished all too quickly. The most popular cocktail is another menu regular - The Pavlova with vodka, tropical fruits and citrus juice and whole meringue nest floated on top. There was a constant stream of these being delivered to tables throughout the night. Too sweet for me in a cocktail but there is most definitely a market our there. The Lychee Lounge is the place to start or finish an evening, when you're either gearing up for a night on the town or looking to chill out with a nightcap before you head home. Conveniently located a few steps away from a high volume 199 bus stop, on the night we visited, I could see people stopping in for a cheeky drink. read more

If you take me to Lychee Lounge, I will love you. If you buy me an expensive cocktail, I will love you even more. Forget food, you come here because you want to spend inordinate amounts of money getting sloshed on elegant mixes of liquids, not because you want to save money. You come here because you want to know what a watermelon martini tastes like (superb by the way) or because pavlova has been a favourite dessert of yours forever and you want to know how well it translates into a drink. It translates wonderfully, just so you know. At Lychee Lounge you get the best infusion of alcoholic ingredients such as Belvedere vodka, high class gin, and creamy concoctions that have accents over their spelling because they are just oh-so European. $16 is about the average that you pay for a good cocktail but you pay more around $18 for the more adventurous combinations. I love to indulge in a cocktail or two for special occasions, but drinking here often would send you broke. You can go for your classics like martinis and margaritas, mai tais, and blood Mary's. One of my favourites is a Singapore Sling and then there are champagne cocktails, which I would allocate to purely celebratory occasions. But as far as range goes, Lychee Lounge has the longest list of cocktails I have ever encountered, so it's worth going back to try the many different infusions. I remember walking past this place back in my underage days and longing for the day that I could come in and be classy and sip on cocktails. When I was finally of age, this place did not disappoint. Lychee Lounge is one pretty cool locking cocktail lounge, I especially love the Barbie head chandelier. The cocktails at Lychee Lounge are simply divine, not cheap, but you get what you pay for. Their signature cocktail is their Lychee Martini and let me warn you, these are so delicious that you could easily drink 5 in a row and kiss bye-bye to a hangover-free morning. The staff here have always been really friendly- even on their busy nights. One downside to Lychee Lounge is that it is fairly small and pretty popular so it is easy to get cramped. This is why I also like to come here for a late afternoon drink with finger food as it is a lot less crowded during that time frame and equally as enjoyable. I love ordering the kipfler potato chips which are seasoned in a sweet-chillesque batter and served with the most amazing lemon mayo, so delicious. Writing this review has actually reminded me that I am long overdue for a visit to Lychee Lounge. It is one of the best cocktail lounges I know about. read more

Two words: Pavlova cocktail. I could just leave my review there (ermagherd, Pavlova), but I suppose I shall carry on for a bit. Lychee Lounge has been around for ages, but they are still doing what they do best, serving up immensely awesome cocktails in a cool atmosphere. You will get service at your table rather than having to head up to the bar, and they are genuinely wanting you to have a great time, regularly asking how your cocktails are and giving you helpful suggestions. There are many new cocktail bars around in the area of West End, so I just hope Lychee Lounge keeps hanging around. read more

I visited the Lychee Lounge upon the promise of a friend of "best shoestring fries in Brisbane." And what can I say, I wasn't disappointed! As good as the fries, brownies and other snacks were, the drinks were definitely the highlight of our evening. The uber creative menu makes the decision very hard . . . or alternatively, very extensive! As strange as it sounds, I'm very thankful to the lovely bartender for talking me out of the delicious sounding Walking Turk (orange blossom & turkish delight!) because of it's strength! Because if he hadn't convinced me otherwise, I most likely wouldn't have tried the watermelon martini. Delicious and fresh, and pink! I feel like this is the cocktail Barbie would order when she hits the town. Following this was a French Fizz, promising me white chocolate in a slightly boozy liquid form. Upon first sip, any white chocolatiness was drowned by the strength of the alcohol itself! But once I got into it, I very much enjoyed it. Very friendly service, cool decor (not sure about the dolls head chandelier), and you can split the tab at the end of the night. Just don't go at peak times because the service and quality of drinks suffers when the bar gets extremely busy. Get in there when it's quiet and the night is yours. Getting through the cocktail menu might take you a while, but it's time well spent to find the one you reeeeeeally want. Live a little and try something different, too! I went on a sultry summer night with a group of friends and we all sat for a few minutes admiring our cocktails before we could bring ourselves to start drinking them. I went to the Lychee Lounge one night when it was incredibly busy. My friend and I could barely step inside and only one of us could make it to the bar to place an order. The wait staff were friendly, but the payment process was disorganised; our money was taken by the bar staff and our change was brought back by a waitress much later. The seating arrangement was uncomfortable; my friend and I had to sit outside on stools with our legs pinned up against the wall. As for the drinks, we ended up ordering two cocktails with fresh lychees for a reasonable price. But it was the strongest cocktail I'd ever had and tasted like it was half alcohol. The only lychee flavour present was the lychees I salvaged from the bottom of the glass. read more

Lychee Lounge has been a favourite Brisbane spot of mine for years. I love the cocktails. I loved the staff and the atmosphere. I went tonight to celebrate a long week of hard work. I arrived and went to the bar and said hello cutely and asked for a drinks menu. I was questioned "how many drinks have you had tonight?" I replied, confused, that I hadn't had any and that this was the first bar I had been to. I was denied service, being told that I seemed intoxicated and I wasn't going to be served and neither would my partner. Both of us were completely sober. I was disgusted and shocked. I left and was considerably irritated and quite offended as I walked down the street. I decided to go back to ask for an email address to complain to the owner of the establishment about the incredibly offensive manner of which I was treated but was hustled outside of the bar and told that voicing my opinion was grounds to label me as "disorderly." I have never been so offended in my entire life. It was one of my number one spots but this one incident of misjudgement and ignorance has ruined the place for me. It goes to show that while the place may have amazing drinks, customer service goes a long way, something the manager needs to improved on greatly if he wants to keep his loyal customers around. read more
