We were on an extended visit to Toronto when we stumbled on Luxmy Catering, and I'm glad we did.
We were at the plaza looking to pick up some haleem from Patna Kebab, only to discover they were closed. What's a hungry person to do, but to explore all the neighbours looking for an alternative?
Luxmy is a fascinating little hole-in-the-wall Sri Lankan catering shop. Don't let the seeming randomness of the tutoring services, greeting cards, etc. put you off. The food we tried was delicious (Sri Lankan rolls, kotthu roti, fried prawns, and a number of things whose names I've forgotten).
The main complication is that there is no posted menu, so if you don't know much about the cuisine, it is hard to ask for anything specific. We basically left ourselves at the mercy of the owner-operator and asked her to feed us whatever she had fresh on hand. The risk paid off in very affordable tastiness. And that owner-operator is a fascinating and very special lady. She greeted us so warmly from the moment we set foot in the place. On our first visit, we were treated like long-lost friends. On our second visit, it was more like long-lost family. A warmly surreal experience, overall.
Cheap, tasty, friendly... a great combination. I do hope she considers printing a menu or price list one of these days, so those of us with limited exposure to Sri Lankan food can learn what to ask for. read more
