I described what I wanted: long, thick eyebrows w/ a high arch. When she was done: I was pleased. It was very nicely shaped, a little more round that I wanted, but I didn't make that clear when she asked if I wanted angled or curved shaped. A bit later, I realized that my eyebrows are wayy too thin for my liking, especially after growing them out since february! I'm really disappointed at that, because the journey begins again to get that nice natural thickness of my eyebrows. Why don't waxers go thicker than thinner to be safe (it is the more natural look)? It's like asking someone to cut off 2 inches of your hair and they cut off 5! This review is LONG overdue (Sorry Adelina!). I brought in my 16 year old daughter to help her get her skin care improved since I found myself buying all kinds of over-the-counter or online skins care products. She had the occasional breakouts on her forehead and cheek areas. Over time and now 7 months later her skin has had great improvement. I used to go to this Vietnamese lady in Cupertino that brags that she is the best at brow shaping and waxing, but she charged $20 and always hurt me when she tweezed that I would bleed and have little scabs! Then I went to another Vietnamese place in Milpitas that did an okay job, charged $10 but never asked how I wanted my brows and hardly spoke English! After reading reviews on Yelp, I called Adelina and left a message. A couple hours later, she personally called me back herself to set up an appt. with her the next day! So I drove there having a bit of trouble finding it because it was in a little plaza area and the address had a "Tanning" sign above it. So I went in 15 mins. before my scheduled time and she took me in right away since her 1pm didn't show up. The room was nicely decorated with soothing music playing in the background and made me feel relaxed! She asked how I wanted them done and she had me sit up in a chair which was different from what I was used to. She chatted me up the whole time and after she was done, she gave me a mirror to make sure it was to my liking. I noticed one was thicker than the other, so she corrected it. She asked me if I was happy with them...Afterwards, she then put concealer to hide the redness and then filled them in to tint them. I asked what she used and she showed it to me, told me about it, recommended a color that would look best...I went to the mall and bought it right after I left! She charged $15 for the brows but I gave her $20 because my first time with her deserved a tip like that! I was pleased with her work! And let me tell you what surprised me....not only did she take the time to get to know me and make me feel comfortable, she was nice and friendly from the first time she called me back wishing me to "enjoy the rest of my day" shook my hand at the door when I arrived, and when I left there, she told me to enjoy my weekend and actually HUGGED me goodbye! like my friends do! Some people are uncomfortable with that, but I guess it's more of a girly thing! She's very polite! She listened to what I wanted and gave me the arch that I asked for! I can't say enough good things about Adelina, she's a true miracle worker. I was very hesitant on coming to her only because I've tried literally EVERYTHING from topicals, medications, serums and Accutane (which would clear my acne for a little bit then come back). I hate to be the one who bursts the 5-star bubble, but here goes... First, I'll start off with all the wonderful things about Velvet Skin Studio and Adelina. She's super friendly and very accommodating with her schedule. I called and was able to get a next-day appointment! Waxing is virtually pain-free and you won't be left with redness or bumps. Adelina is also pretty thorough and will re-check to make sure that she catches any strays. There were just a few minor things that slightly irked me - 1. The lighting in the treatment room wasn't adequate and it took several "re-checks" to capture the strays. In fact, I noticed a few more after I returned home. 2. As a new client, I was hoping to get the "April Special" of a complimentary brow shape with my Brazilian, but never received it. 3. I was charged $45 for my session (which is a great price!) but when I handed over $60 in cash, I never received any change back... only a wave and "Thanks for coming!" It really would have been nice to let me decide how much tip to leave, instead of assuming that it should automatically be 33%. Don't get me wrong, I definitely believe that Adelina is worth the $60 and more.... I hope that this may have just been an oversight or something. read more

I live in San Francisco. But I am more than willing to drive down for Adelina. She is fantastic. Not only is she easy going but she is friendly and caring. I went here for my first Brazilian Wax. Let me tell you, I did all my research on Yelp and found that she had PERFECT reviews. Alot of the other yelpers seem to be first timers too which eased my mind that she was really good at what she does. I made an appointment with her (she only works FRI-SUN) and it was easy to get a time that I wanted. She is a SF native as well, so we had much to talk about. The outside of the building looked a little dated, but the inside of the facility was very clean and well maintained. Adelina was the utmost professional and extremely wonderful aesthetician for my first wax visit. She kept a conversation going to help me forget the most challenging moments of my visit. Her waxing technique was to leave as little pain as possible and no evidence of hair . She thoroughly described the process every rip of the way and made me feel very comfortable. I came to velvet skin studio for my first Brazilian wax back in 2009-2010. Her studio was difficult to find and like what most yelpers have said, parking is tough. I would advise going early! Her studio is very cute and clean, i really like the whole set-up. So moving to the waxing..since it was my first time, I didn't know what to expect. She did a good job, talking me to get my mind off the pain, and making me feel very comfortable. She also used hot wax on me at the time, hard wax is so much better. So far I've gone to her twice, and each process was pretty fast. Although the second time she did a horrible job, leaving a lot of hairs behind, I didn't realize until i got home.. After my two experiences with her, I decided to venture out and try other places and they we're so much better. Experience, pricing, and location wise. Super new update!!!! I still go to Adelina, and am more in love with her now. Everyone praises my eyebrows (yup, praises them!!), which is something I am not used to because I have always had the worst eyebrows ever. I am moving to Berkeley within a month, and I will continue to see Adelina in San Jose. Also, something to take note of: Adelina wants you to be beautiful. She called me out on my adult onset acne (so what?!?!?) and recommended a line she offers that is kick ass, and comparable in price to Clinique, which I used to use religiously. My skin is MUCH better now, and I don't have to break the bank to purchase the products. In fact, when I ran out of something and Adelina was out of it, she promptly ordered me some more AND gave me a smaller bottle to tide me over until the shipment was in. What's the lesson here? You don't have to be rich to enjoy rock star treatment. I have seen Adelina as a bartender (kinda broke), a social worker (broke) and a student (super broke). Go see her now!! Initial review: Baby smooth skin...oh yeah. I thought this was only achievable by whipping out your razor and assuming positions in your shower that would make a Japanese porn star blush. I thought that getting rid of the hairy Italian upper lip would require $19.95 plus shipping and handling--ordering the device only because I was up late at night watching infomercials, stoned out of my tree. (Simpson's sidebar: It's Krusterific, Johnny Unitas--but is my lip supposed to bleed like this?) And my eyebrows...well, I was scared to get them done after the last lady shaved my eyebrows. Yup, shaved my eyebrows, just like I was in high school at Mount Pleasant. (Don't look at me like that, Mount Pleasant alum--you know what you did!) Then I found Adelina. I'll admit, preparation for the waxing was a bit nerve wracking. I don't have naked problems, but I did have fears about pain, if she would notice that I haven't shaved my legs in a week (I was planning on shaving them after--going for the trifecta of smooth). Turns out, it was almost pain free. Inexpensive as well---$60 for first time, then $45 for maintenance. My eyebrows are looking fantastic, too. I no longer have the impulse to pluck. Adelina is a god send. I went in recently for an eyebrow shaping and I have to say, she gave me the BEST EYEBROWS OF MY LIFE.. and that's probably an understatement. I am a professional make-up artist, so I understand how important a good brow is to balance your face. I wanted a brow that had a nice medium arch, while keeping full so I don't have to fill them in.. basically, I wanted to be able to walk out of my home with a beautiful, natural brow that complimented my face. I know, I was asking for a lot.. Adelina delivered 10-fold. Most brow places take 10mins max, quick wax there, some tweezing, and you're done. Nope, not Adelina. She took her time to make sure my brows were purrrrrrfect. Its been nearly a month and I'm still getting compliments on my brows (esp. from other beauty professionals -- its amazing). Man oh man, I really like Adelina and frequented her for the better part of a year, but I've found a new place. She's METICULOUSLY clean, using good products, latex gloves, never double dipping, etc. I also really really liked the convenience of texting for appointments. She's really good at getting back to you that way. On the down side, her office has difficult parking at best, I was charged different amounts at each appointment for about 6 months, and since returning from maternity leave her hours are really low and odd. Being a mom myself, I can certainly understand the desire to spend as much time as possible with your new baby, but being available a couple of hours a few evenings a week almost begs to have customers shop around. :o( Sorry, Adelina. After reading rave review after rave review about Adelina, I just had to give her a try. I have been putting up with getting sub par treatments for so long, I was eager and ready for the real deal. From burns, to chaffing, to lots of missed stray hairs--while paying between $45 to $65--I needed to find a new wax lady fast. Getting an initial appt was tricky. She never answers her phone so I finally left her a voice mail. I got a call back 4 or 5 days later. That's too long in my opinion but I really wanted to try her out so I persisted. After several emails and text messages later, I finally secured a Saturday appt. This is the hardest I've had to work ever to get an appt for anything! I figured, once I get my initial appt, the next ones will be hassle free since I'll be making my appt on the spot after my treatment. The great reviews about Adelina were true! She is fantastic. Wonderful personality. Professional. Clean. Quick. I didn't check to make sure she didn't double dip though. That was my own bad. I was so into our conversation that it didn't really occur to me at the time. I had a brazilian wax done (everything off) and she charged me $60 for the first time. If you come back within 3-4 weeks, she'll charge you $45. She's moving to her own salon in May so check her website for the new address. I was completely satisfied with her work. She was pretty thorough although there were a few stray hairs but she was cool about letting me double check. And when I found a few, she apologized and got them all.
