I work in Banff and had two extra days off this weekend so decided to try out this theatre for the first time . Mind you I'm from Calgary so I will be comparing this theatre to Calgary theatres. Normally I don't go to movies here never mind going alone but today I just wanted out of the cold and I wanted to check out the Little Women movie. It was the only one out of the four that interests me. The theatres play first run movies but the style is that of a second run theatre ( e.g. canyon meadows) in Calgary. On that note, I am disappointed that the price isn't $5 given that its the same old style theatre as canyon meadows.. but it beats the retro style first run theatre in Calgary ( Eau Claire ) by a lightyear. Last time I went to Eau Claire with my friend for Frozen 2 simply because my bus stop to go back to Banff is there. Eau Claire was overcrowded and seats were uncomfortable. Plus we all lost our sanity after HALF hour of trailers after the posted start time. Here it is only 15 min of trailers. This theatre had better seats and way less crowded. My former roommate has been here by herself once and said she got the theatre to herself. I arrived to an empty theatre and was hoping for that but wasn't as lucky. Guess it's the weekend and people come here from Canmore as well because there are no theatres there. Only complaint are the bathrooms. Let's just say that one toilet is on the verge of breaking. Other stalls look like they haven't been properly cleaned. As for the prices, it's not $5 unfortunately but it is cheaper than Calgary prices and maintees are even cheaper than evening shows. Calgary theatres don't offer discounts to maintees which is sad because my friends and I always choose these times. Tuesdays are $7. read more

I didn't think there was anything wrong with this movie theatre. I don't often go to movies in small towns, and I've certainly never gone to a movie in Banff before this weekend, but it seems like a pretty standard, four screen theatre. We went to see Bridesmaids at 9:50pm on a Sunday night. Tickets were $10 even, which is slightly cheaper than full price in Edmonton. The lobby area was a bit of a mess, but whatever. The theatre we saw our movie in was totally normal, seats were of average comfort, and the sound was good. You buy your tickets at the box office at street level, and then go up a flight of stairs to get to theatre level. This could pose a problem for some people. I didn't look to see if there was an elevator or not. Banff is definitely a party town at night for people my age, and I think the movie theatre is a good option to get away from that if you don't feel like being at the bar every night. read more

I loved coming to the Lux Cinema. It is more of a social gathering then watching the actual movie. On Tuesdays it is packed and everyone goes there probably because Tuesdays is cheap night and you get a medium popcorn and drink with your ticket price. The theatre itself is not the best I've seen. Its small and sometimes the aircon doesn't work but oh well its cheap and fun! read more

Canmore and Banff are small Resort towns that see huge fluctuations in population through the different seasons. This is likely the reason we only have one movie theatre, with a total of 4 screens, to service the local year round population. The year round population, like the movie theatre, is relatively small, but unlike the movie theatre the population has kept up with the changes in Society over the past 10 years. Now I used to go to the movie theatre in Banff at least once a week before I had kids, now we tend to wait for the movies to be released on DVD before watching them. When I do go to the movie theatre it's usually because there is a Kids movie playing that the boys want to see on the big screen. That was the case last Sunday. We don't tend to get many kids movies in Banff but last weekend the movie 'Shorts' finally made it here, and the boys had been bugging me for a couple months to go see it. We arrived for the 1pm matinee and as we asked for a tickets the young kid behind the window said "the projector just broke, it's not playing, try again at 3pm" - no apology, just a statement. Thankfully, there is so much to do in Banff for the kids we had no trouble wasting away a couple of hours. When we went back at 3pm the same kids gave us a smile and told us the exact same thing - "projectors broke, it's not playing'. The ticket window at the Banff movie theatre is outside, so I decided to go inside and see if I could find out a little more information. There was nobody there. The concessions stand was deserted, although it popcorn and disposable cups strewn across the floor, the carpet was missing in places and heavily stained in others, there was what looked like construction material piled up underneath where al the posters advertise the new releases expected to arrive at the cinema over the next few months. The place was trashed, and not an employee in site. This is one movie theatre way past it's prime, not an enjoyable experience, can only imagine how bad it would have been if we'd actually got in to see the movie. Think I'll be making the drive to Calgary in the future. read more

While I appreciate that lux Banff is known for handing out complimentary movie passes to local groups for prizes and raffle baskets, they do not honor them. I recently won a movie pass in a raffle that I paid for and assumed it was a gift certificate for one free movie. I was deeply disappointed when told it was not acceptable and told if I didn't have money they couldn't help me. I have tried to use the movie pass 3 times, and in every circumstance been denied. Please stop "donating" movie passes if you have no intention of honoring them. read more
