I love getting a blowout before trips or special occasions so I can feel put‑together and low‑maintenance, but this place made that impossible. First appointment: I arrived on time the day of my trip. They were running 20 minutes behind with no warning, no courtesy call, no attempt to adjust or offer another stylist. I had to cancel because it would've thrown off the rest of my schedule. I ended up going on my trip without my hair done. I let it go and decided to give them another chance months later. Big mistake. Second appointment: I showed up on time again. It was over 90 degrees outside, and the stylist was standing outside because she couldn't get into the building -- someone had taken the keys. I've never experienced anything like this at any reputable salon. We stood there awkwardly in the heat, eating into my appointment time, again with no call, no warning, nothing. After about 12 minutes of waiting, I told her this was the second time something like this had happened. Once again no solution and no offer to make it right. Just indifference. And once again, I was left without a blowout for another special event. On top of all this, their prices have gone up, and the attitude here is not pleasant. Ladies, do not trust this place for a blowout or any hairstyle. They do not value your time, your schedule, or your important events. I want to address the blatant and disappointing inaccuracies in the salon's response to my review…read more I am extremely disappointed that instead of acknowledging the concerns I raised to improve future client experiences, the business chose to misrepresent what actually occurred during my visit. To be completely clear: my stylist did not consult with me even once about what I wanted my hair to look like. This includes tone - my hair is not even the correct color. The only person I spoke to about my hair goals was the assistant, not the stylist. At one point, I even had to ask the assistant whether I would be getting a root smudge (I've been getting my hair done for 15 years and am familiar with what is typically involved in my services), because again, the stylist did not communicate with me at all about my preferences. The stylist blow-dried a single section of my hair and then did not return. After that first section, the next and last time I saw her was as I was walking out of the salon, while she was actively blow-drying another client's hair. Because of this, there is no possible way she could have done a "final check," assessed breakage, or evaluated the overall condition of my hair as suggested in the response. While the stylist did eventually call to apologize (which is the bare minimum), I did not hear from the salon itself. If they truly cared about hearing/fixing my experience, I would have heard directly from them. I will not be returning to this salon or this stylist. Why would I return to a place where I felt disrespected, rushed, unheard, and where my hair was damaged? I also want to clarify that I have no issue with a stylist working alongside an assistant. In fact, I mentioned in my original review that the assistant was very sweet. My issue is with a stylist who does not communicate with me at all, is dismissive and rude, and is so overbooked that she is barely present for the service I was paying for. I did not include this originally, but the stylist was also extremely rude to the assistant, so much so that I considered stepping in because of how poorly she was speaking to her. They pay us via their own online payroll system and we have to login to to transfer our funds to a bank account or Paypal. After working a few jobs with them, my account was hacked and someone was able to login, add a new transfer method and transfer my wages to their account within 4 minutes of my being notified of a "new login". I saw it immediately as I was on my computer when it happened, and changed the password, but it was too late. They had transferred funds to a Paypal account that was named with my last name, so it's obvious that there was some kind of data breach in their system that allowed for someone to strategize this and did this either to track their transfers or simply to fly under the radar and not be noticed. I didn't share my password or login with anyone, nor did I have any other login attempts or hacks on any other account so it's obviously stemmed from wherever this data is being stored. This also obviously was someone that knew their system well enough to be able to do this so quickly in spite of their website backend being a little strange to navigate. After completely ignoring multiple emails, their controller finally responded. I was shocked at the lack of seriousness in the company's response. I could not imagine why any company would not take seriously that their data is so not secure, that their employees wages are straight up getting stolen. Who runs their company that way? When I finally did get a response, the controller was not only NOT EVEN A LITTLE BIT apologetic or empathetic for ACTUAL WAGES from hours of SKILLED WORK getting stolen from THEIR lack of security in THEIR unfortunate excuse for a payroll system, but when asked what the company was willing to do to rectify or assure me that I was safe to continue working and this would not happen again, she simply responded by denying that this has ever happened before and saying there was nothing she could do. In addition, I love letting my stylist do their magic b/c I am a loyalist, and when it comes to color/highlights, I want to allow them to paint the canvas b/c they know what's on trend and they are the experts. I was spoiled b/c when I lived in the Seattle area, I had a gem of a stylist, and b/c I struggled finding the right person in SD, I continued to see her up until last year, when I was fortunate to meet Siobhain. She's newer to Ashen Salon, but I've followed her here and for sure, this is the right spot! The salon is bright and has a great energy! The receptionist is inviting, and the stylists all seem happy! They have some complimentary beverages while you're getting your service, along with some nice seating and magazines/books. One of the biggest challenges with finding the right stylist is my hair grows very fast and has a natural wave. It varies based on humidity, as girls with wavy/curly hair know, so I've had previous cuts where people razor my hair or however they cut it, it always makes me have major triangle head (not a good look)! Siobhain tends to cut my hair dry, which was an adjustment, but overall it's allowed her to see how the hair will lay when it's dry and follow the natural wave. I've also gotten color and highlights done, which is my fave with Siobhain! She always keeps me fresh and on point, and I always get compliments on my hair after I see her! Besides her skills, she's just a gem and always vibrant and on her game! In my short time seeing her, my mom and my other friend have both had pixie cuts from Siobhain, which according to my friend, also requires major skill to meet the person's preferences, and they've both been happy! Street parking is usually decent, although summer months likely will be busier. I'm not aware of any associated parking, but I've never had any issues finding parking. Appointments are definitely recommended. Pricing is along the standard I think I've seen with most salons, with most cuts ranging around $40-80 based on length/style, and color/highlights ranging from $100-250 depending on what you get done. So happy I found Siobhain and have a great stylist in the SD area now! I definitely recommend that you see Siobhain at Ashen Salon.
