Luray Cavern is one of the largest cave system in Eastern USA, spreading over 64 acres. The cave maintains a year round temperature of 54F (12C) and has a 97% clean air quality. It gets chili on hottest of summer days, so a light jacket is recommended to bring along. The main pathway is about 1.5 miles long, 160 feet deep at the lowest point, takes about an hour to walk and explore the whole place. It is one of the most popular tourist destination in Virginia. We bought tickets for the 8:30am guided tour on July 4th. There's only one guided session offered each day. We were glad do pick the tour because 1. we got the cave before it got super crowded and 2. Scott was a fantastic tour guide, throwing historical notes, facts and bunch of dad jokes for the 2 hour long session. The cavern itself was so stunning to explore. I had never seen a cave so closely before. The rocks and the formations really displayed the crazy workings of Mother Earth. Whole place had wonder ambient lighting, highlighting the best parts of the cave. The pathway was smooth and had guard rails in steep places. After we were done with the cavern, we went to the other museum in the area that were included with our ticket. The gift shop was also huge, full of amazing merchandise. We bought a bunch of stuff like magnets, stickers and photo frame. The shop was giving a free Luray cavern tote bag for shopping over $100.
Such a cool place!! (literally, it's like 50 def down there) At first I thought the ticket price was a bit high, but once we went thru the cavern and wound our way through the labyrinth, I feel like the price matched the experience. We spent a good 2 hours working our way around, and it seemed like every turn there were new interesting formations to see. At one point I told my kids it felt like a real life gravel rock set, but sadly they don't know that reference . The car museum was a cool surprise as well with a bunch of really cool vintage cars and carafes that I was not expecting but made the visit even more worth it. Overall 10/10 would recommend!
Visited this natural, largest caverns in the US, on June 13, 2026. If you plan to go solo, like I did, with friends or family; headed over to Triple AAA website and purchase your tickets. By doing that you save around $6 , per ticket. The check in process is fairly easy, they scan your ticket before entering the Cavern, and at the Luray Valley Museum to keep track of attendance. For your ticket purchase, it includes the Car & Carriage Museum, Luray Caverns, Toy Town Adventure and the Luray Valley Museum. The cavern was beyond beautiful, from the history of when it was found back in 1878; to the informative brochure that tells you about the cavern and it's formation. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and if you get chilly , depending on your visit take a jacket. Well worth the visit for all. Breathtaking, unbelievable inside the cavern. Check it out , and learn as you go, well enjoy nature beautiful creation; the Luray Caverns.
If you are wheelchair bound, disabled or having trouble walking, the Luray Caverns is not for you. Otherwise, there is plenty to do all in one day. Wifey and I have never been to caverns and did not know what to expect. The caverns goes up and down, round and round and through and through. It is for the young and the very young at heart. We asked at the welcome center if the caverns were handicapped accessible. It is not so do not be fooled. After the caverns, we exited. We were too exhausted to do anything else. We were all pooped out. The wheelchair got away from us a couple of times but no matter. We handled it. Thank you Lucay caverns for an awesome by tiring afternoon. I mean this literally!
Researched this place we arrived. We were really excited about seeing and hearing the organ. We were lucky that it was very busy; however, overall, it was overhyped. It was interesting, but we really were hoping for the organ to play longer than it did so that we could appreciate it. It does play every 5 minutes if you want to wait until the next play, which we did. It was made to be more of a tourist attraction with the maze and other museums rather than an appreciation of a natural wonder.
I have been to many Caverns in my travels and this one by far is the best I've ever seen. Some you must travel far down under ground this one you just walk into no elevators, making it nicer for people with fear of tight spaces. To begin with the parking lot is huge and they also have parking for RV's which is great. Walked into the welcome center and purchased our tickets. If you have a Giant grocery card you get a discount. Walked down a ramp into the caverns. We took so many photos. Every step you take is spectacular. Finally, we visited the display of cars and carriages. What a wonderful collection. They also have a rope park, a village and a garden maze. Fun for the whole family.
Omg! So much fun! I've always wanted to tour this place so this was a dream! It's a beautiful cavern and since it was mid week, it wasn't busy at all. I am pretty claustrophobic so at the tail end when things kinda got smaller I had to get through quickly. So glad we made the trip.
Luray Caverns is a great all-purpose experience whether you're on a romantic date, solo, or with the family. Having visited multiple times, it is a great experience for all. For what comes with your entry pass, the sale is a very good value. $36 for adults and $34 for seniors. $18 for children 6-12 and children under 6 are free. Included in your entry ticket is your Luray Caverns self-guided tour, which simply means you walk through the caverns at your own pace, the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, Shenandoah Heritage Village, and Toy Town Junction. If you have time, there is also a garden maze nextdoor which is $12 for adults, $8 for children ages 6-12, and children 5 and under are free. I recommend purchasing tickets in advance, online, as ticket lines in person can someone be long with many tour groups. What I love about Luray Caverns is it is the largest cavern on the east coast and has an interesting history. Young boys walking in a field and noticing air coming from a sinkhole led to the discovery of the caverns in the late 1800s. There are huge chambers in the caverns, making space for large groups to gather. You'll also observe wishing pools, sparkling lakes that present an optical illusion, and original paved walkways. Seeing the stalactites and stalagmites is a wonder. The Great Stalacpipe Organ is also a must-see as it is the world's largest musical instrument in the caves. If visiting in the summer, you'll appreciate the drop in temperature as you descend the caves, making for a cool summer activity. The temperature in the caves remain consistent throughout the year. One thing to note is there are narrow ramps and walking paths throughout the caverns, so keep this in mind if visiting with guests with mobility concerns. Overall, a very good experience and one worth visiting.
WHY should you see Luray Caverns? Luray caverns are beautiful, true. Undeniably stunning vistas. But why here specifically? Apart from the fact that to come to this exhibit, there is a lot to do in the small town of Luray and its surrounding areas. In a smart move, some smaller museums have been established right along the same walkway as the entrance to Luray Caverns - museums you might otherwise never go out of your way to see, but still enjoy. A short drive from Luray is Shenandoah National Park. At the end of the day, appreciating the beauty of the caverns themselves is AN EXISTENTIAL EXERCISE. When you look at the hundreds (probably thousands, really) of stalagmites and stalactites and realize that each cubic inch takes a century to form, when you realize it took millions of years to form, you can't help but feel the awe of standing in this place that existed before people, that was forming when dinosaurs still walked the Earth. That alone makes it worth it. I liked the SELF-GUIDED TOUR. My family likes to take our time with such things, and we got to slow down and appreciate each notable spot and not feel like others were waiting for us. Conversely, there were groups that moved through rather quickly. A little pamphlet with numbers gives a little info on each spot. My personal favorites were the DREAM LAKE and the STALAGPIPE ORGAN. The Dream Lake really does feel otherworldly, surreal. With no more than 18 inches of water, it reflects a mirror world of deep chasms and at times you feel like you could fall in. The Stalagpipe organ is an amazing feat of engineering with an ethereal, almost haunting sound. They play a few tones on it periodically. No wonder some people choose to get married in that big hall where it is located. Indeed, a wedding party gathered outside as we were leaving. There are RAMPS and SLOPING PATHS, but I would not call the caverns ADA-compliant by any stretch. Child #3 rolled along in his stroller and most of the time this was fine, but at least once I had to really push at a steep angle to get him up to another level. It would be difficult for some folks in wheelchairs, depending on arm strength or motor. This goes without saying, but the caverns are a consistent temperature and humidity. Pleasantly cool; having a light sweater or jacket isn't a bad idea. And it is that way year-round, so you don't have to worry about the weather outside! The gift shop is pretty standard with tchotchkes galore. Nothing too outrageously priced. The whole experience was a wonderful one and I would recommend it to anyone who appreciate natural beauty.
Overpriced. Good experience but overpriced. Adults are $36. And the children's price ends at 12 years old. So you can have two 13 year olds and two adults and it will be $144. Good experience but make sure your wallet can take it.
My first time in a cavern and was blown away at nature's hidden beauty. The tour was self guided and easily navigated. The walkways are mostly lined with rails to hold on to. Some spots get slick. I saw a few older folks have a hard time going down some of the pathways. Take Baby steps to stay safe. My photos do not do justice to in person views. After we finished the caverns we toured the property. Everything was great.
Wow this was a tremendous site. It's crazy to learn about the stalactites and the stalagmites. They grow 1" every 100+ years. So crazy to see what formed here over time. Def take a tour here if you are in the area.
This cave is a must see if you are ever in the Luray, Va., area, or anywhere within a couple of hours drive. It is the largest cavern on the east coast and is just truly gorgeous. It's an easy walk all through the cave on a fairly even path that lets you behold beautiful stalactites and stalagmites in their true element. There are lakes of water in the cave that offer beautiful reflections. The temperature stays an even 54 degrees as you wind through the attraction taking in some unique and unbelievably pretty formations. There's also the world's largest natural musical instrument -- a stalacpipe organ -- that self plays some great tunes. This was truly an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.
The ticket takers all looked like they hate their job. Not friendly at all! Found it weird for as many people that the place holds there are only three ladies restroom stalls. Caverns are very slippery so you definitely need to be in tennis shoes with a grippy bottom. It's about a mile underground and very hilly. Would not recommend going during a busy time because so many people are stopping and taking photos and kids are running wild. Take your patience with you.... read more

Luray Caverns is a breathtaking natural attraction, featuring impressive rock formations and easily accessible, well-lit paved paths. Highlights include the famous Great Stalacpipe Organ, which is a must-see. It's recommended to wear comfortable shoes and bring a light jacket, as it can be cool inside. To save money, you can present the Giant members card, and a discount is applied to tickets purchased on-site at the ticket booth only. After the tour, you'll exit through the same route you entered. There is also a souvenir shop and historical displays in glass cabinets worth checking out before you leave. read more
So much better than I expected! We were lucky to be in the cave when it was almost empty, and it was an incredible experience. The paths are easy with no tight squeezes or steep ascents/descents, so unlike many other cavern tours I've done, Luray should be accessible for people of all mobility levels. The tickets are not cheap ($90 for two adults and a kid), but the admission price also includes admission to the toy museum (a tad underwhelming), the car museum (not huge but very cool), and the historic museums and buildings across the street. You could easily spend half a day within the complex. Well worth a visit! read more

Screams Tourist trap! My husband and I and two older kiddos decided to come here and compare Luray Caverns and Shenandoah Caverns that we went to the day prior. We walked in after tackling the parking lot. We bought tickets pretty fast, but it was already very busy and sensory overload. We went to the left and walk out the back door after squeezing through the gift shop just to get to the exit to go down the long path to the cavern entrance. Once in, they take your photo with a green screen and then we proceed inside. Once there we were giving a quick briefing and we were on our way. That's it. No tour guide explaining things from there. You have the paper/map to do that. But, once in it was so crowded. Everyone stopping for photos ect. We bypassed and went further in to avoid the mass. Inside I felt like we were looking at the same thing, over and over again. All while trying to navigate the masses. It was exhausting and not enjoyable. There was garbage here and there. Garbage cans overflowing and that was at like 1pm. read more
Me and my wife stopped in for the self guided tour on 10/24/24 upon arriving at the tunnel entrance we met the most amazing employee that greeted us Courtney . During our 3 hours in the cave we bumped into Courtney a few times . Every single time we kept being amazed by her and her knowledge of the caves . We got recommendations on local coffee shops and other little things to see in the area for our trip back thru . We can not wait to come back thru in a few days to see the caves again and to see Courtney . There is also one of the most spectacular carriage and car museums . At the museum there is a small candy shop with real smooth and rich fudge . read more
This cavern was absolutely gorgeous and I would highly recommend it. This is a 5-star location. However, there wasn't much of an opportunity to learn about the things you were seeing. I met one employee at the organ pipe and was so delighted to hear her description of several items and history of the cave. That was very exciting to get more of the inside scoop of this beautiful natural wonder. I would definitely see if there is some literature about this cavern to read prior to your trip, to help you better understand what you are viewing. The visit is a self tour, so you can go at your own pace. However, I would still try and go on a day when there is less traffic as some of the beautiful areas can become quite impacted with people. This was an incredibly large cavern and I was pleasantly surprised with the cleanliness, especially considering the amount of people visiting and that Luray Caverns offers the organ pipe area as a venue for weddings and parties. I really enjoyed my visit and highly recommend this visit. read more

Beautiful caverns and we have been to many! We loved the self-guided tour and setting our own pace. The signs and the pamphlet were clear. The caverns were huge and had so much to see! We loved the discount for customers with a Giant grocery bonus card too! It was a fun time for our family of five! read more
We happened to tour this cavern first during our cave and cavern visiting adventure. That was a mistake. In wine tasting, you should start with the lighter wines and work your way up to the bolder ones. Well, these caverns are absolutely spectacular! The formations are incredible and you could take a picture literally every step of the way during the tour because it is that amazing. Well, after visiting Luray, it sort of put a damper on the remaining caves we visited. The only thing of note is that it is a self-guided tour and although there are proctors stationed in a few spots throughout the cave, there is t anyone to talk about the history of the place. read more

I've been wanting to go to Lurray for years now and have finally gotten the chance to go. Took us about 90 minutes to walk thru everything at sloe pace with it being super empty. Deff somewhere to check out and see if your wanting to go. It was gorgeous read more
Super fun couple date idea ! Me and my boyfriend took a stroll through the caverns. Some of the more important structures are labeled with numbers and they correspond to information in the pamphlet. I thought it was super fun to take the time to read everything together. The pictures truly don't do this place justice. Staff were very nice as well. I recommend wearing sneakers for sure as the place can be a bit slippery and have downward slopes but there are hand railings and scuffs on the path to ensure you don't slip. read more

Of all the things that we experienced in the area, I think this was the most interesting. You don't have a to be a geologist to appreciate it either. The vastness and beauty is pretty amazing for a cavern that seems like nothing as you pull up into the parking lot. We did this on a hot afternoon and it was a great change of pace from hiking/driving the national park. read more
Explored this subterranean wonder world on a 1¼-mile paved walkway, most of it around 80 feet below the surface, with the deepest part at 164 feet. The caverns have a steady temperature of 54 degrees, but humidity can make it feel warm. The caverns are a seemingly endless amalgam of hardened shapes, colors, drips and ripples. The caverns themselves are absolutely breathtaking. I would recommend this visit to anyone. The tour is about an hour long. read more

Very cool experience! The tour was self guided, which was great because we had our three year old with us, allowing us to stay longer at areas we thought were the most interesting and walk quickly by less interesting items, to keep up with his attention span. It took us about an hour to walk through. They give you a brochure that talks about the different areas of the caverns, so you can read along as you go. There were also workers throughout that you could ask questions of. I would highly recommend visiting if you are in the area. read more
Yes, there are other things to do here to occupy your time. There is even a ropes course! However, the only reason I was here were the caverns. Being the largest caverns in the eastern United States I do not see why anyone would give this less than five stars. Yes, there is the cost, but a massive amount of effort went into carving this tour out of the cave system and there seems to be quite a bit of maintenance needed given the conditions of the environment. The temperatures average something like 54 degrees, and it is super humid in the cave system. The self-guided tour relates numbers on plaques to descriptions on the pamphlet or on your phone if you scanned the QR code before entering. No, there is no Wi-Fi down there! The mile long walk is a one way route and pretty much the only rules are don't touch and be sure to get out before closing. Be it luck, nature, or planning, the route takes you through a pretty diverse wonder of scenery that you don't need to be a geologist to enjoy. Yes, some of it looks the same over and over again, but you will also run into unique features that make the overall journey extremely worthwhile. read more

An absolute must!!! Gorgeous caverns- very mystical and "Lord of the Rings" vibe. Takes awhile to walk the mile and 1/2 around the caverns and lots of tourists taking selfies. But well worth the trip. Included in the tickets was entrance to a carriage/car museum, a toy museum and a pioneer village- well worth the $35 entrance fee. Highly recommend!! read more

I really did enjoy this place one of the best and easiest walking caverns I've ever been to around the world so that's all people could come and enjoy. Really enjoyed the lighting this place had. So much cool history. I was little annoyed with some other people who kept touching everything. They're not supposed to touch. read more
This was my first time going to a cavern and I was so pleasantly surprised! The caverns were gorgeous and I had a ball taking a lot of different pictures of different rock formations. The whole area is kept so nice, clean, and organized. There's a cafe nearby, a gift shop within the main entrance where you purchase tickets, another gift shop with fudge and ice cream nearby, and a rope course as well as a hedge maze. There's plenty of parking -- the lot is huge. The prices as of 6/26/2024 are $34/adult and $32/senior. The prices are about as much as I would expect, but I was surprised to see that the senior discount was still expensive. I think there could be a better senior discount, considering there was a lot of walking and lots of slopes so our seniors had to leave early to find a place to sit down and rest. They give out pamphlets in the main room which have labeled exhibits that you can follow during the tour. It's really interesting and helpful to read a little more about the labeled rock formations we see within the cavern. There are plenty of signs, steps, and railings installed inside the caverns for safety measures when walking on slopes, especially the wetter slopes since we are exploring a cave. The lighting was done well in the caves -- they made for some great pictures and were just helpful to see all the rock formations overall. We got lucky that we stopped at just the right time by the organ because we got to hear them play. The sounds amplified by microphones felt almost ethereal -- it was a really great experience. My favorite part was the wishing pool. The blue color emanating from the pool was really pretty and it was fun watching people, especially families, enjoy themselves while throwing coins in with their kids. Luray had apparently also fundraised for a lot of charities over the years, too. The gift shop was very robust with many things to choose from at different price points. I was pleasantly surprised to find agate slices and smaller rocks and crystals for really affordable prices (the agate slices were ~$4). You could get a souvenir coin, mortar and pestles, geodes, wine glasses made of crystal/rock, feathers with animals painted on them, wine stoppers, and more. There was just so much to choose from! Some things were more expensive than others but they were all really cool gifts that you could get for any occasion. All in all, I think Luray Caverns is a really neat place to go to and I'd definitely recommend going there at least once and especially if you're visiting Virginia from out of state. I think the price is fair for the experience and for how much care they put into safety and making the experience enjoyable for guests. read more
As spectacular as it was when I visited as a kid in the 1980s. The tour is reasonably priced, has a good senior discount, and takes the perfect amount of time before your kids start going sideways. We drove from the DC metro and it was well worth the gorgeous drive through the beautiful hills of the Shenandoah Valley. Highly recommend! Our 7 year old is already talking about the next trip there! The ropes course at the facility looks fun even though we didn't have time to try it. read more
We had an amazing experience walking through the natural wonder that is Luray Caverns. We visited in during a Saturday afternoon in late February, and the crowds were pretty slim. I think there were about 20 folks that were spread out through the caverns during our visit. While reading reviews, I have to admit that I was kind of afraid about large crowds. We did the self guided tour, which was pretty low key. We were given a guide pamphlet and sent on our way to explore the cavern. The walk through the caverns is a little less than a mile and will take about an hour to complete. There is a paved walkway, but I think it might be a little tough to navigate if you are in a wheelchair. But, I'm sure the folks that maintain the caverns have special accommodations. For me the caverns were a little warm. I think temperature outside was about 55F; however, I had to take off my sweatshirt while walking through the caverns. I believe the guide say that the temps inside the caverns can reach 70F. Although the price is about $35, you will have access to a couple other smaller museums in the village - Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, Toy Town Junction, and the Shenandoah Heritage Village. For an extra few bucks, you can check out the Garden Maze (some say that the maze is a-MAZE-ing) and the Rope Course. Driving from the DC Metro area (about 2hrs, based on traffic) is pretty much a breeze (one you transfer from 495 to I66) with beautiful scenery. I think this is perfect day trip for getting out of the city for a few hours. read more

For years (decades, actually) traveling between NY and NC along I-81 we've been intrigued with Luray Caverns. This time we made it a destination along the way. Glad we did, too! Easy to walk this 1-hour self-guided tour was interesting, well laid out, and worth the price of admission. We especially liked the lighting which uses traditional, more natural highlighting techniques. In 2017 we toured the Reed Flute Caves in Guilin, China which used multi-colored lights which we felt distracted from its wonder. Not here, thankfully. Looking to hike below the earth in a cool and fascinating cavern? Give 'em a whirl I say. read more

Tickets are a bit pricey, $35 per adult (12 and up I think) but with your giant card, you can get half off every other adult's ticket for up to six people in your group. Has other small attractions nearby like a maze or climbing/bridge park. Was worth the drive out to. read more
My friend and I took a detour on our road trip to visit after finding a brochure in NC. Boy am I glad we did. We have both traveled extensively and felt this was one of the most amazing places we've been. Pictures do not capture the grandeur of the caverns, they are simply stunning. We are both making plans to bring family and friends there. It's worth the 7 hour drive from NYS! Just go, you won't be disappointed. read more

While you're in Virginia, a trip to the largest caverns in the eastern United States is certainly in store! Luray Caverns operates more like a roadside attraction than a national park, but the views are pretty spectacular. The self-guided cavern tour is estimated to take an hour, but most people are able to make it through in around 40 minutes, even when they stop to read the materials. There is a cute gift shop where they take your picture at the entrance! The cavern itself is glorious--a little spooky if caves aren't your thing, but the history within it is really something to behold. If you're an instrumentalist, you will also love that the cavern holds the world's largest natural instrument. The guides can even play the cavern organ for you! Your ticket ($32 for adults, a little steep) includes access to two other on-site museums, a car museum and an Americana museum. Neither of those topics is particularly interesting to me personally, but they were very well done nonetheless. read more

Luray Caverns is must-see. An absolute gem of a natural wonder. Since Luray is the largest cavern area in the eastern U.S. it has cathedral-sized rooms with never-ending stone formations, giant stalactites/stalagmites, and mirrored pools. You can either take a guided tour or go one your own with a handheld device. read more

Exceptional, a great opportunity to learn about the different formations in the cave. It is a trip that can be for family or for a quick get away for a date . They have a cafe and they have this finder shop that houses classic cars from the roaring twenties . Make sure you check out the freshly homage chocolate chip cookies from scratch in the front after the tour of the classic cars. read more

The family and I drove out to Luray Caverns on a beautiful Fall Saturday. General admission for the self-guided tour is $34 for guests 12 years and older. I'm glad I reviewed the FAQs because guests receive 50% off their second adult ticket with a Giant BonusCard which helped us save a few coins. We were in awe and absolutely loved the cavern and the fossils were beautiful and amazing!!! I wish we could have experienced the guided tour to learn more about the history but paying $65/person for a family of 4 wasn't in the budget. The cavern is underground so it's cool and damp - be sure to dress in layers. Overall, we enjoyed our visit and wish we had more time to explore the other activities/attractions. read more

Luray Caverns was breathtaking! My boyfriend and I visited the morning of Wednesday, July 2, 2025. Notably, John and Nick took time to answer our questions, provide insight beyond the self-guide pamphlet, and showcase the quirks of the caverns, even after working hard rescuing dollars from the wishing well. There was a very kind and informative staff who played the cavern organ for a group. It was evident the staff were knowledgeable, took great pride in caring for and studying the caverns, and ensuring visitors had a great experience. Be sure to stop by if in Virginia! read more
This was a cool experience! I've never been to a cavern before so this was cool to see. It is on the pricier side so I wish I knew what it went to but it was busy & you can spend about 1-2 hours in depending on how long you stay in there. I do wish there was a tour guide explaining how everything was formed though. That would be nice! But nice experience nonetheless read more
The cavern was beautiful. 32$ pp was pricey when there was supposed to be a tour guide. We took our time walking through the cave. Spent over an hour here. Mostly taking pictures and being in awe of the formations. They take your picture at the entrance and let you buy it at the end. It's a nice magnet souvinir to have. read more

I do not believe so, they are in the process of completing a ramp that will get you down into the cave, but as of 2 weeks ago it was not yet open. I'd call and ask.
