What a collection! So cool seeing toys from so many generations. Love seeing how they progressed, as well, especially the dolls. Located on the grounds of the Luray Caverns. In the area, Check Them Out!

Pretty easy breezy museum that features toys from the past. I probably would not go out of my way to visit this museum, but it's a nice little museum to check out after exploring the caverns...since you are already in the area. While there wasn't much to see in this museum, I did really appreciate the various train sets winding throughout the various expositions. For two adults, it took us about 15 minutes to walk through the museum. The museum is connected to a cafeteria, with a few bites (corn dogs, hotdogs, icecream, random snacks, etc.)

We had a great time at this toy museum. The vintage toys were interesting. We highly recommend visiting this place if you love toys. The toy train station was amazing. It was like going back in time.

To begin with the parking lot is huge and they also have parking for RV's which is great. Walked into the welcome center and purchased our tickets. For what comes with your entry pass, the sale is a very good value. $36 for adults and $34 for seniors. $18 for children 6-12 and children under 6 are free. Included in your entry ticket is your Luray Caverns self-guided tour, which simply means you walk through the caverns at your own pace, the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, Shenandoah Heritage Village, and Toy Town Junction. If you have time, there is also a garden maze nextdoor which is $12 for adults, $8 for children ages 6-12, and children 5 and under are free. I recommend purchasing tickets in advance, online, as ticket lines in person can someone be long with many tour groups. What I love about Luray Caverns is it is the largest cavern on the east coast and has an interesting history. Young boys walking in a field and noticing air coming from a sinkhole led to the discovery of the caverns in the late 1800s. There are huge chambers in the caverns, making space for large groups to gather. You'll also observe wishing pools, sparkling lakes that present an optical illusion, and original paved walkways. Seeing the stalactites and stalagmites is a wonder. The Great Stalacpipe Organ is also a must-see as it is the world's largest musical instrument in the caves. If visiting in the summer, you'll appreciate the drop in temperature as you descend the caves, making for a cool summer activity. The temperature in the caves remain consistent throughout the year. One thing to note is there are narrow ramps and walking paths throughout the caverns, so keep this in mind if visiting with guests with mobility concerns. Overall, a very good experience and one worth visiting.

During yesterday's visit, I specifically went for the GIANTS exhibit showing the personal collection of Swizz Beats and Alicia Keys. A variety of amazing work both 2D and 3D, thoughtfully curated to showcase hip hop and black culture--and very generous of them to have it all on loan. The Basquiat was a must-see, though not one of the more impressive ones. The decommissioned prison uniforms was thought-provoking. The Kehinde Wiley paintings of Swizz Beats and Alicia Keys were everything. Gordon Parks and Jamel Shabazz photography. The Kwame Brathwaite photography were among my very favorites. Just wow. The color. The respect. The beauty. I would definitely go back to take it all in again.

On this visit, the special exhibition was Giants featuring works from the Deans (Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz') collection. Fee was $12. It was a very large exhibit and was quite popular too. I really enjoyed the wide variety of modalities featured on display. The museum is currently undergoing a huge renovation but there is still a significant amount of art to see. The collections on display are diverse in both range and medium-ancient civilizations to contemporary and painting, sculpture, photography, textiles, Fabrege, decorative arts. I was really impressed with the extensive collections of American and European Art with paintings from many well-recognized artists: Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent, Van Gogh, Monet, Picasso, Edgar Degas, Boudin, Winslow Homer, Salvador Dali and several more. The Asian art collection is also significant and ranges from sculptures to drawings to ceramics with a significant amount of Buddhist art. Unique to this museum is the large collection of decorative arts: silvers, furniture, Fabrege, glass, etc. There was also a small area near the interactive family lounge area highlighting art completed by children participating in one of the many programs they offer throughout the year. The museum shop is worth visiting and is nicely curated. There's also a cafe on the first floor and a restaurant on the third. Parking is available in the parking deck adjacent to the building for $6. Another interesting thing to note: the museum is open 365 days a year!

This seemed pretty common for troops to occupy houses on their travels and doodle on the walls, but this was a lucky example to preserve it behind paint which was discovered in time for it to avoid demolishion. Some graffiti is better preserved/readable than others, but it is a recent site to be opened to the public, so it's a work in progress. It's interesting to think of the young men who strolled through here 150 years ago. There was a knowledgeable guide who walked us through a few rooms pointing to some of the writing, a small exhibit, and a small gift shop. It's free, but since it's all volunteers, we gave a donation. It won't take very long to go through, but it's a cool historical site to visit in the area.

This has been on my FXBG bucket list for quite some time, and honestly, I have no idea why we waited so long to visit. What an absolute treat it was. For those unfamiliar with him, Gari Melchers was one of the most respected artists of his generation, known for his portraits, murals, and landscapes. Born in Detroit to German immigrants, he studied art in Düsseldorf and Paris before eventually settling at Belmont Estate in Falmouth, Virginia, near Fredericksburg. Even President Theodore Roosevelt sat for one of his portraits during Melchers' prolific career. I won't go too deep into the history lesson here, but I will say that his "country retreat" was absolutely stunning. My husband and I spent a couple of hours wandering through the gardens, touring the home, and exploring Gari's personal studio. It was such a peaceful and immersive experience. I found myself completely absorbed in his story, his artwork, and the beauty of the property itself. Since I was in a dress, we skipped the walking trails this time, but we definitely plan to go back soon in more appropriate attire to explore them. If you enjoy history, art, architecture, or simply beautiful places, I highly recommend adding Belmont to your list of places to visit.
