Great, cost effective way to get high quality Omega 3 fatty acids into one's diet sans the strong smell and taste of fish. (Flax and borage oil? Both can be equally unpleasant minus any attempt at flavoring agents, natural or otherwise.) I know that a longtime friend who lives in Washington routinely buys all her littleneck and Manila clams fresh from Barlean's, but I (a humble Okie) can only find Barlean's Omega 3 emulsions at Sprouts. I used to go to the Cash and Carry in Bellevue, WA before I moved to Vancouver, and I loved their can't-be-beat prices on many pantry staples. I recently needed a Cash and Carry fix, so I Googled the store in Bellingham (just an hour from Vancouver, max) and this store popped up. Yes, I drove an hour and crossed the border to get my fix (don't judge!). This site is somewhat hidden behind some office buildings but GPS found it okay. Like the other Cash and Carry stores, they have an abundance of boxes outside to take and use for your groceries, and unwieldy dollies for larger orders. For me, the biggest draw for this store is its AMAZING selection and low prices of coffee syrups! DaVinci and Toscani brands. OMG so many flavors and so many sugar free selections, and they all cost a fraction of what they go for elsewhere. A fraction. I'm not exaggerating. I stocked up on 10 bottles. These are the primary reason I love this store. The place isn't pretty. There are no fancy displays like at Whole Foods. But you don't pay Whole Foods prices. It's a warehouse. It's clean. It has most everything you need, grocery-wise, at the lowest prices around. If you need disposable plates or cutlery for parties or picnics (or if you're a room parent for your kid's classroom at school, like I was for a decade, in charge of class parties), this is the place to go. We had several grilled oysters, shrimp, geoduck (my first time!) and some raw oysters to top off a mid-afternoon snack. We all grabbed a drink, including a pinot freezio, which is something I NEED to learn how to make. It was a pinot grigio slushie! While I normally think the grilled oysters up north are a bit better, today they were out of this world. The raw ones were fantastic and although I do usually prefer a few more accoutrements, it was nice to have only simple lemon with them - no vinegar or hot sauce that day, for some reason. Geoduck is something every non-PNW person asks you about and I can finally say I've had it - I say go eat it because you'll not have anything like it. It was a ceviche style snack and it wasn't rubbery or fishy at all. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to say they ate the massive mollusk. It's off the side of Chuckanut drive down a pretty steep and skinny hill, so take care. Parking can be tough during peak season but it's worth the drive. Thei views are gorgeous and there's something eating fresh seafood next to the water, looking out over the bay. I can't wait to take the next group of friends that visit!

It's a fun, large market, with a lot to choose from in the heart of Bellingham. The Bellingham Farmers Market occurs on Saturdays, so when I visited, I made my way over there an hour after it opened, and it was already packed! People get here early for the market even in the rain! I was impressed to see the large crowds with the wet weather, but it didn't stop us, Washingtonians. It really reminded me of a community event that many of the locals spend time at on their Saturday mornings - love that. The market takes place in downtown Bellingham, and has an outdoor area, along with a large indoor space where the market staff have a booth, selling their merchandise. It's also a dog-friendly market, so expect to see a lot of furry friends. There was live music, plenty of vendors of all specialties, and was next to a seating area where people could enjoy their market eats. I had a fun time, checking out all the vendors and supporting the local economy. I would happily be back to the Bellingham Farmers Market when in the area.
