Be very careful if you are booking an appt online. I was pleased with the staff and the owner. I had a good massage there and used the PEFM healing modality. I am giving them 4 stars instead of 5 because I had booked my appointment for 10:00am on a Saturday morning, however their system didn't have me anywhere. and didn't have anyone to give me a massage for the time I booked. They also blamed me for the lost appointment because I didn't get a confirmation email and probably missed the very last button I needed to press in order for the appointment to go through. I didn't realize I had to do these things to ensure my appointment was booked. They did find me a massage on the same day for the late afternoon. I told the front desk I would call if I couldn't make it. She told me I would need to call at least an hour beforehand or they would charge me. I understand their need to know if I'm not going to make it, but they are going to charge me after they couldn't find an appt for me at the scheduled time? Honestly that was too much. read more

I had my first massage here this beautiful Sunday morning with Lisa Matteson. She was impressive with her skeletal muscular knowledge; she immediately identified my issue and went to town! She was able to get me to relax enough so that she could get to the knots in my back that have been causing extreme radiating pain down my right arm. With my Eurasian upbringing I was massaged from birth on, I'm a self proclaimed expert in the field. I do not waste time on massage therapists who don't have the skill-set required to render a positive outcome. I am 9 months pregnant and tried the flotation therapy for the first time. It was heavenly. I've always had trouble with back and hip pain, but now with pregnancy my discomfort is exacerbated. The float cabin was exactly what I needed for a reprieve/adjustment. The entire experience was so relaxing. Everything was spotless, I never felt rushed, you have a personal shower, and the floating space is big enough to move around in and stretch if you feel up to it. On top of it, the woman who checked me in and out is a doula so I felt reassured about how helpful the floating would be as she encouraged me to try stretching and different positions while I floated. I took the opportunity to enjoy an awesome nap and to stretch. Based on my experience, I think you could do either or both and feel very satisfied. I am definitely doing this again before baby arrives (if there's time) and postpartum. I wish I had discovered this therapy earlier in pregnancy. The only warning- reality is a little harsh as you pull yourself up from floating. read more

I have been to float here several times. I can say with clarity that this is the best place in town to float, hands down. The staff is amazing, always. The realization that I am about to embark on this 60 min float journey is incredible. I love the rest and relaxation that my mind and body need and recieve from LUMEN. So this is my third visit and it definitely won't be my last. First time was just for a massage - heaven. Today I combined a massage and a float - just what my body needed. But I really want to talk about the floating, since this is probably what's the most intriguing to most people. Ok. First and foremost this is a pretty big float cabin, vs a little pod, which helped. I'm afraid of water, (can't swim) a little claustrophobic, and absolutely afraid of the dark. But I've read about all of the benefits and felt like I've been on sensory/emotional overload. I needed a break. The first 15 minutes were rough. The lovely lady helping me gave me the hint to count backward from 100 with every breath. Worked like a charm as I was genuinely afraid of being inside my own head for an hour. If I can do it... Water was only 11 inches deep and there is so much Epsom salt you couldn't sink if you tried. The darkness wigged me out a bit. Just kept my eyes closed until like the last 5 minutes. It was like floating in warm outer space but in pitch blackness. No phones ringing, no alarms buzzing, no people, no stress, no gravity. Plus my muscles feel completely relaxed from the magnesium overdose. Couldn't be more relaxed. This has got to be the closest to feeling like you're still in the womb you can get as an adult. Or maybe as close to being an astronaut. Either way, super awesome experience. I did the mid-package today with the massage and the float. Second time floating was much easier to get into "the zone." Next time I want to do the package that includes the neuro brain therapy and the FAR Sauna. They do so many biohacking type things (I'm a nurse and I'm intrigued" that I want to experience MORE! read more

The NeurOptimal training sessions have been remarkable for me. They have been instrumental in shifting lifelong patterns of depression and despondency. I felt the change after two sessions, and I continue to take advantage of them. I have also done flotation, Pulse and the infrared sauna. I was telling a friend about this place the other day, she was like, "Just go to California and get in the ocean. You'll float in there, too." No, you don't get it, Cindy. It isn't the same thing. If I just kick back on the Pacific, I'm thinking my first concern would be sharks, then sunburn, water splashing in my eyes, and the inevitable drift out to sea. Float spas are supposed to be therapeutic and this one, LUMEN, is kinda like seeing a good shrink. Full disclosure: I got a great introductory discount on an hour float here. Why am I jonesing to return? As I told the owner, I've spent most of my life dealing with mild scoliosis, nothing terrible, just a curvature that impacts my lower back. The float spas at LUMEN are exceptionally roomy, and within about 30 minutes, my body was in the best alignment in years. I could hear them, the spinal pops and clicks, that felt SO good. + Floats are private, one hour sessions + Rooms are secure and comfortable, no need to bring a swimsuit + After getting comfortable, the music stops, lights go out (you can keep the lights on, if you really want to), and you're free to crash or just listen to the voices in your head + To get comfortable, I suggest utilizing the floating "halo" for additional head support Without wasting much more of your time, LUMEN ain't no one-trick pony. Offering a workout apparatus that's straight outta Blade Runner, brain training, and mind/body/holistic options based on good ol' science and biology, I'd trust this place to cure my pain in front of, quite honestly, any western or eastern medicine. Tait is the BEST athletic trainer EVER! My daughter injured her knee in February and due to COVID we could not get her the help she needed sooner.... Tait assessed the situation, worked on her and totally fixed her! She was lunging by the end of the session. I bought her a star wrap and he sent her home with Strengthening exercises to do at home. My daughter' exact words when we left: " I went in there feeling like an elderly woman and came out feeling brand new like a teenager again" We are so thankful for Tait and we will be back in a month! read more

I have been to one other float place, so it was difficult not to compare the two. The staff was friendly and they did a nice intro. The float tank itself smelled a bit musty. There was a slow drip coming from the ceiling that I had to try and avoid so I wouldn't get salt water in my eyes. When making the appointment I was told I didn't need to bring anything, but they didn't have combs and i definitely needed one afterwards. The last float place I went to supplies combs, so I didn't even think of it. Overall, other places do better so I wouldn't return here. read more

On the little triangle strip at Monte Vista, Central and Girard there is a new sign up, not flashy but appealing. The light blue horizontal oval says "Lumen: Mind, Body, Float" with a symbol that could be a flame on water, or a flower bud- you decide. Inside Lumen smells new and clean. I immediately noticed the fuzzy modern area rugs in the lobby. I touched one and was delighted by it's soft silky feel. I took my shoe off, just like grass, only copper colored and no allergic reaction. Cool. Meanwhile, Dan Spanogle, the owner, is behind the sharp front counter and entering my vitals into the computer: name, email (I had three emails when I got home and 2 more have come in the last few days). Looming in the corner of the lobby is a huge black ARX machine. I was not here for that- it looks quite complex and for another day, but the scoop is this machine provides motorized resistance with tracking software instead of weights for a whole body workout- better workout, less time, and no injuries. Super cool. So I sign a release form and go into the bowels of Lumen with Dan as my guide. There is soothing music, dim lighting, sofas and many therapy rooms. A few for massage (they have a deal with Masterpiece Medical Massage) one for Neuroptimal Brain Training (gotta get back for that one!), an infrared sauna with a glass front and the lovely smell of toasting cedar (back for that one, too!) and, finally, the float rooms. The float rooms have a corner shower with a glass barrier and a huge square showerhead, very important after the float to get all the salt off. The cabin itself stands about seven feet high, eight feet long and six feet wide and is free standing. To the side and tucked away are the motors and pumps and timers for the cabin. In the cabin there is a spray bottle and a washcloth and a head halo (flotation device) but nothing else goes in the cabin without being washed first. There is special soap on the wall to bathe with (and shampoo and conditioner, neither of which did much for the salt hair after, three washes at home worked). Naked and clean you enter the cabin, unless you need to protect a skin wound, in which case you smear petroleum jelly on it first. Now a timer has been set so the lights will dim and illuminate automatically. I chose a ninety minute session, Dan had informed my the first 1/2 hour or so is mostly getting settled and slowing down. Clouds; remembrance of light. Floating in nothingness, I felt safe. Only two people knew I was naked just off Central and Girard. The preview by Dan Spanogle was very thorough, still I was not prepared for the sensation of the float cabin - weightless yet supported. Honestly, what I've always dreamed water floating was like. The reality of all the obligatory and life-saving wiggling to stay a float has always been off-putting. So, floating on twelve inches of very salt-dense water was, well, dreamy. After I showered, I settled into the cabin. A few minutes later the soft blue light and mood music faded. What a relief. Dark. Truly, dark. When I was six or seven years old I instructed my little brother about the movies constantly playing on the backs of your eyelids. Anytime you wanted to you could just close your eyes and watch. This was an effective sleep aid for us both. Now, in this cabin of dark and flow I realize the eyelids were only the screen, the movies were right in front of me all along. Was this my eyes remembering the light? I like remembering it is somehow refined and abstract at once. My neck was irritated before I arrived. During the float I was able to subtly (and not so subtly) shift my pelvis side to side and allow the undulation up through my head. I then pressed my pelvis down into the liquid salt and released sound as my center popped back up. The sound of my voice was very distant under the water. The vibrations of my vocal chords and the monsoon of sympathetic vibrations occupied most of my experience. As I stretched I was able to produce very low and very high pitches. The silence in-between was truly the gift. The emotional energy was dynamic in the cabin. I laughed (fairly maniacally) in multiple bursts. I cried and shook violently, I sighed and rested and repeated. I guess I did that for 85 minutes because suddenly the cabin was bright blue. Things I learned in the dark: you don't have to turn your head to reach- if you do you get liquid salt in your eyes (there is a towel for that), you will lose your bearings- losing your bearings is pleasurable, my heart has a cool beat, float stretch is good stretch, the head halo flotation assistant is also a good bumper, the cabin size was perfect for me (I am 5ft. 9in.), bumping into a border was grounding. I found a physical, mental and spiritual freedom in the floatation cabin that is still resonating with me. The freedom of meditation, free from the cruel restrictions of gravity and light; breath, imagination, and movement are free to explore the vacancies. read more

I was extremely surprised by the inside of the facility and the quality of the massage. I opted to try the soak before my massage. The person who did my orientation said that you can move around as much as you want, the minerals help you stay afloat. I accidentally got some in my eye (please warn newbies) and it ended by experience. It was fine with rinsing while I was showering off. They have ear plugs, why nor eye masks. Also, need a soft glow of lights and calming music in the soak closet, especially if you are by yourself in complete darkness. Why am I giving this place 5 star? It was my massage. Becca did an amazing job. I started the massage questioning if she would be able to give a good deep tissue massage, especially since it was for 90 minutes. She managed to surprise me by being able to be as strong with her hands from start to finish. read more

After I was hospitalized twice this past year with random infections I caught out and about, I started looking for ways to boost my immune system. When I used to live in Reno, there was only one place that had an infrared sauna and I remembered that it was so helpful in sweating out toxins, clearing my skin, and boosting my immunity. Found this floatation therapy place from Yelp and it was such an awesome 60 min float experience! At first, I imagined this tank is filled with 6ft deep pool and you're going to float on top. I got scared because I could never float in water, but this water made it effortless. When I saw the tank and the water level inside, that was when I felt more excited that this was going to be awesome The tank is filled with 1600lbs of Epsom salt and when the timer starts the light is turned off with absolutely no sound inside so you'll experience complete sensory deprivation (although I got scared at first when the tank turned completely pitched black with zero sound). The best way I can describe Lumen is as a haven. It's truly one of the most relaxing experiences I've encountered. It's a futuristic spa/wellness center that offers a variety of services ranging from massage and floats to high-tech brain training and exercise machines. The lobby is well lit and beautifully furnished (as is the whole facility). The waiting area is lovely and tasteful. You feel relaxation and wellness from the moment you walk through the door. My first experience here was with the ARX machine. As a self-proclaimed gym rat, I was so excited to try the machine. I only did a one-exercise demo, but I can fully vouch for the effectiveness of the machine due to the soreness I experienced post-exercise. ARX (adaptive resistance exercise) is a machine that adjusts to your body's max rep capacity on almost any given exercise, and focuses on the eccentric motion for maximum effectiveness. I got to try the chest press. Dan, the owner of Lumen, guided me through this exercise. First, he had me do one rep at 50% of my "max" so that the machine had a baseline to adjust resistance. Then, I tried for 75 and then 100% of my max. The entire exercise took only 3 minutes, and yet I was shaking and completely fatigued after the exercise (I workout 3-5 times a week). Dan told me that you only need do 1 full body workout with the ARX per week to get the same muscular benefit as you would working out in the gym 3-5 times per week. I WILL be doing this again! My second experience here was with the infrared sauna. This sauna is SO relaxing. With most sauna's, I can only stay in 5-10 minutes because it's too darn hot! Not this sauna. Because the infrared heat heats your body from the inside out, you can stay in much longer and experience a fuller detox than you would with a normal sauna. You can also adjust the overhead LED lights to match your mood (I chose blue and pink). I did a 40 minute session and felt AMAZING afterward. Dan thought of everything, and afterward I wrapped up in a fluffy robe, put on some slippers and enjoyed some tangerine tea in the "lounge" area. My most recent experience at Lumen was my favorite... the 60 minute float! I have floated several times before but this was by far my most favorite experience. These tanks are huge, so I didn't feel claustrophobic like in the smaller tank that I had experienced before. Pre-float, you'll rinse off in the shower and use a pre-float wash to prepare you for your session. The water temperature is perfect, as it matches your skin temperature (which makes it easier to relax). The tank has a lovely blue-green glow and relaxing music playing as you get in. As you lay back into the epsom salt water, you will float to the top effortlessly... so that your body is partially submerged, and your muscles can completely relax. After 2-3 minutes, the lights and music will turn off an you'll experience complete sensory deprivation (although it smelled quite nice in there, so perhaps not totally complete sensory deprivation). It took me a little bit to completely relax, but I used deep, meditation-style breathing to speed up the process. Once I had been in for about 10 minutes, I think, it was difficult to tell, I was able to relax completely and enter a wonderful meditative state. My body was 100% relaxed... not a single tense muscle. I was so comfortable that I am pretty sure I dozed off at the very end. It was so nice that when the music chimed in to wake me up and alert me that it was time to get out, I thought that I should've opted for the 90 minute float! I showered afterward and felt happy as a clam the rest of the day. A few tips: If you've never floated before, try a massage before so you can relax and get yourself into the right headspace. If you don't already meditate, it may take longer to get relaxed during your float. A few years ago when I floated for the first time I didn't meditate frequently and it took me FOREVER to relax. Now I meditate 4-7 times a week and it was so much easier to get into a good headspace to relax. Bring a hairdryer and makeup if you plan on getting ready afterwards. I visited the infrared sauna to get my sweat on and loved this place! There's a few goodies to buy (lotion smells amazing, plus Himalayan salt bags for...pain alleviation? Hmm) and a relaxation room. The sauna was hot, large, and had a mini audio jack for my phone so I got some meditation in. There's water and a cold towel for afterwards. Ella (sp?) at the desk showed me around to their exercise equipment, Neuroptimal brain machine thingy, and floatation tank. This is a nice joint, AND if you want to abandon everything healthy after you go in, there's a Taco Bell right next door! Perfection. I have visited Lumen twice now and I must say their sensory deprivation tanks are extremely relaxing. I've visited other locations that offer float sessions and the tanks were very dark and small. Lumens larger tanks have the option to keep a light on while you float which helps those that may not like to be in the dark. The location is also very upgraded and has a nice relaxation area to read books and sip on tea or water after your service. They also have towels , body wash , shampoo conditioner , blow dryers and a few other amenities that help set them apart from other wellness spas. They certainly took their time in developing this space! I look forward to also testing out their infrared sauna in the future. read more
