Ludlow Castle is a large, partly ruined, non-inhabited castle, which dominates the town of Ludlow in Shropshire. It stands on a high point overlooking the River Teme and is owned by The Trustees of the Powis Castle Estate on behalf of the family of the Earl of Powis.
Ludlow Castle is a lovely castle. It is one of the larger castles in the area with impressive curtain walls, a very spacious interior and a grand inner bailey with Keep, Chapel and various living quarters.
The only problem is, is that it is poorly maintained (outside of the very well stocked and laid out shop!!!). This is usually the issue when these types of historic places are privately owned and maintained.
Apparently the Earls of Powis (the owners) have arrested further decline by putting money into this site to ensure that it remains standing. However, I do not think that they have put any money in for some time.
There are a few wobbly information boards around the site, but are few and far between. Numbers that were once fixed to the walls to allow you to recognise what part of the castle you are standing in, (in relation to the visitor information sheet), have been removed or fallen down, so you rely on a little map to determine where you are on site. Once you have managed to determine where, and the name of the place, you're standing in, thats it.no further information available, which is a real shame.
This place could be soooooooo much better. Its a grand place that could be so much more tourist/visitor friendly. All it needs is better signage and more information, if not on signs then at least on the information sheet that you are given on admission.
Pull your finger out Earls of Powis and spend some of the entrance fees on preserving the castle as a tourist attraction. Either that or sell it to someone who will, like English Heritage.
