We have adopted 2 dogs from them in the past 6 years. Each time has been a great experience and the people that work/volunteer there are amazing! Both times we ended up with wonderful pups, their process is easy and they get back to you quickly and don't mind answering a million questions you might have about the dogs. They are located 2 1/2 hrs from us and it is well worth the drive to adopt from this rescue. read more

You never contact anyone. I've given up looking to this organization for a dog. I have been a long time dig trainer. I've requested to meet dogs only to be left hanging. It's a sad state of affairs. I never even received a phone call. I see every week you begging for someone to adopt one of you dogs. I've grown frustrated and called madacc. I was seen the same day by one of their specialists and was approved for one of their dogs right away. I'm picking up my dog Friday afternoon. Signed one unhappy customer. read more

DO NOT WORK WITH LUCKY MUTTS. If I could give negative stars, we would. The story starts with an amazing dog named Mozart. He was being fostered when we applied for his adoption. The foster family had nothing but wonderful things to say, and sounded like he would have fit in well with our family. We've fostered in the past, and know what our house, and current dog, will be able to handle. Then comes the weekend where we were going to adopt -- The shelter contacted us to let us know Mozart was recovering from kennel cough, and should wait a week until we take him home. Cool, we totally understood. Another week goes by -- Then we hear that the foster family took on a puppy who was diagnosed with Distemper. They let us know that even though Mozart had his shots, we should still wait for a negative test result before adopting. OK, we understood. A few days go by, and the shelter called to let us know that Mozart was negative for Distemper. Awesome news!! So we contact the family on a Sunday to schedule a pick up. Now, up until this, the foster family has been communicating wonderfully. But they no longer respond. We try to schedule a pick up/meet on Tuesday of that week, still nothing from the family. The people from the shelter let us know they can't reach them either. After 4 days of no response from the foster family, we get a call on THURSDAY saying they have decided to keep the dog. The husband, who my wife had never spoken to, called her and rudely told her that they decided to keep him. Not a sorry, or anything of the sorts. After calling the shelter, they decided that the foster family gets to keep the dog, even though we had been in contact for over 3 weeks about adopting. We planned, purchased beds, bowls, collars, and prepped our house for weeks. Emotionally ready and eager, only be told that we couldn't have him by the foster family. This is horrible business practice to pull dogs from adoptive parents. The person from the shelter, told us that because the family had a hardship, they deserve the dog. Please consider another shelter. From the reviews and some issues last year (look it up in the news) this is not a good place. They are willing to take a dog from a family ready to give it a good home. The person from the shelter kept saying how the foster family was sad to see him go. My wife and I fostered for years, and yes, it is hard, but it's part of the fostering process. There are a lot of other great shelters out there, we were unlucky enough to be scammed by these guys. At least we were smart enough to not send them money. read more

It is clear that everyone who volunteers for Lucky Mutts has a deep love for dogs and truly wants to find the best home for each dog they rescue. Their application process is long and involved, which is a good thing! The purpose is to make a potential adopter think of every aspect of dog ownership before committing. I bet this cuts down on the number of returned dogs! I did have to wait almost a week to hear back after I applied, but this is within the range they state directly on their website (volunteers have full time jobs, too!) Once we connected, I had my sweet boy home within days. They had me bring my older dog along to the meeting, which I thought was good practice. The adoption specialist went through all the paperwork and made sure I was comfortable with everything and that I had all my questions answered. They even have a Lucky Mutts Alumni page on which you can share pictures and fun stories of your pups and stay connected with the foster parents if desired. It was a great experience, and I would definitely recommend adopting from Lucky Mutts if you are a responsible pet owner! read more

They don't even know the dog before writing a description. As soon as the truck comes from the South, the dogs are adopted out the same day. Or a little while later but completely rely on what the Foster said in Oklahoma instead of evaluating the dog themselves. Beware so every dog gets their perfect home. read more

I have never been so heartbroken and insulted in my life. Saw this gorgeous girl online that had been in foster care for two months. Saw that they were having a meet and greet and she was one of the dogs you could meet. I went with my family and meet this sweet girl. They tried pushing us away from her saying they have other dogs "like" her. First off we weren't there to look for a dog like her. I fell in love with this dog and wanted to give her a forever home. The foster mom of the dog arrived to pick her up and all but ripped the leash from my hands. Said she wouldn't be the right match for us. But the people there said if we are still interested to give 'Sarah' a call on Wednesday to see where our application was. I had emailed her which was picked up by the foster mom caring for the dog and she told us again that she wasn't the right match for my "young family" also went on to say that my dog that I have already rescued was aggressive and we need to take him to behavioral classes and figure out his "issues" before taking in another dog. I'm absolutely bewildered that they are quick to judge a dog that they have never met and never once said he has growled at us or my kids. Come to find out that they may have misunderstood my boyfriend when he was trying to explain that he had trained a dog that was considered aggressive. I tried clearing the air and the foster mom still said I need to figure out my dogs issues and work with my small kids with how to treat a dog. Beg your pardon???? My one year old daughter doesn't really know any better. We have been working with her on how to pet nicely but she is only one. And my husky has not once growled or bared his teeth at us. He shows no sign of any aggression and have no idea where they are getting this. At this point it's not about fighting for a dog that a foster seems to not want to give up but fighting for my own dog and sticking up for him. Absolutely disrespectful place!!! Probably won't try adopting from here again and urge others not to to avoid this heartbreak and disrespect! read more

I recently adopted a puppy from Lucky Mutts Rescue. As I have never adopted from anywhere except the Wisconsin Humane Society, I was not aware of the procedures of adoption from a rescue other than the fact that I had been searching online for a puppy for quite a while and all other rescues that I perused had a "meet and greet" with a foster family where both parties would meet at the foster home, interact with the animal, decide if it was going to be a good match, take a few days to think it over and then proceed with the adoption - or not. At Lucky Mutts, they sent someone to my house for an inspection. This person went from basement to bedroom and took pictures on a personal cell phone. This bothered me but I had found a puppy on their website that I was very interested in and, along with an online application, this was supposedly part of the adoption process. After the inspection I was told that the puppy I was interested in had already been adopted but there was another similar dog that would be available soon. I had stated in the application that I wanted a Lab/mix that was going to be a large dog, The inspector showed me a cell phone picture of this new dog and I fell in love. She told me that I would be contacted during the following week with a time for the meet and greet. By Thursday of the following week I had only received an email for the guidlines of the meet and greet which was going to be held at the Beloit location. After some miscommunication between some volunteers at the rescue I was given a time of 10:30 AM Sunday morning April 9th. Again, I assumed it was going to be just my husband and I, the puppy and the foster parents. Instead when we arrived, there was a flurry of activity with dogs/puppies, volunteers and potential adopters. There was also a van in the parking lot that I assume these animals had been transported in and empty cages stacked nearby. someone asked us who we were here to see and then brought us out the dog we had seen in the pictures. However, this dog was a bit older, (approximately 6 to 8 months old), and much smaller than we anticipated. When I asked a volunteer if this was really a Lab/Great Dane mix as I had been told, they said "No" and that it was probably only going to be 35 lbs at most. I was devastated! It had taken me quite a while to get over the death of my last dog and commit to another life long companion and now this new puppy was not at all what I had wanted or anticipated! And with all the activity going on and other potential adopters looking at the puppy I thought was going to be mine, my head was spinning. I wish there had been a volunteer assigned specifically to me and I think it definitely should have been a "one on one meet and greet" and not, what I would characterize as, a free for all. Another family ended up adopting the puppy that I was first in line for so I was glad it was going home with someone but now I was leaving without the dog I had I thought I had my heart set on. After an hour or so, and on our way back to the car, we saw a volunteer holding a little black puppy. I asked if it had been adopted and she said "no" so I asked If I could hold it. She said it had not had it's bath yet so she tool it into the rescue, bathed it and gave it some medication and brought her back out to me. She said the puppy was from Oklahoma and was approximately about 9 weeks old and it definitely seemed to have some Lab in it. I asked what would happen to it if no one adopted it and she replied that it would go to a foster home. So after spending some time with it we decided to adopt her. We had to wait quite a while for other adopters to finish their paperwork and pay their fee. I have to say that I was a surprised that a non-profit charges tax on an adoption but we finished our paperwork, paid our fee and took our new puppy home. In my opinion, because this method of adoption felt high stress, not only on the adopters but also the animals, due to all the activity and, because these puppies were brought in on a van full of crates and did not seem to spend any time with a foster family, I would not recommend this rescue to anyone else. I have tried to get answers to my many questions from this rescue and wrote to them of my experience via email only to be told that my accusations are "false and completely inaccurate". I would've hoped that they would be more attuned to resolving my issues, answering my questions and learning from my experience instead of accusing me of being false and inaccurate. read more
