FIRE DR KENSKE!!! It…read morewas an extremely difficult decision for us to have our dog euthanized. Once we arrived,we were escorted to a very private room and treated professionally by staff. Our precious girl was prepped and ready for the doctor. Dr Kenske walked in and started nervously chattering about her personal information: it was her first day, how many dogs she has, never been married, etc. As one can imagine the stress and emotions that my husband and I were experiencing were overwhelming. The doctor was crying, on the edge of sobbing, while administering the medications and expressing her emotions . My husband yelled for her to stop talking. Yet she continued. I was sitting on the floor with our girl, the doctor was next to me narrating everything she was doing. It was extremely upsetting, especially since there was no confusion that she was already told to stop talking. I finally had enough and screamed for her to stop the chatter before I end up laying on the floor related to my emotional and physical state! Dr Kenske finished administering the meds, threw the syringe on the floor and left the room. The only saving grace was the professional care and compassion that Brittany, vet tech/ Veterinary student, demonstrated. We were then able to sit tearfully alone with our girl. This vet is very professional and honest, especially in emergency situations…read more I took one of my dogs to a different emergency vet at first (called ahead) then when we arrived 30 minutes later, they were at capacity and turned us away. I frantically tried figuring out another place to go which is difficult to do on a Sunday because the majority of veterinary centers are closed. After scrolling on my phone for what seemed like forever I found River Run Animal hospital which is a primary vet with a urgent care unit. I gave them a call and explained the situation. I was lucky enough that they did make an appointment and we got the last urgent care appointment for the day, which is great because it was about a 40 minute drive. We had a little bit of time before heading that way for our appointment so we headed home. We were home for less than an hour when Maggie's vomiting started to contain some blood. I cleaned it and her up as best as I could so my other dog wouldn't get in it and left to head to this appointment. We arrived 35 minutes early for our appointment. By the time we got there her body temperature was dropping, she was turning purple, and very lethargic. Water was always available to her all day but when she drank some she couldn't keep it down and she ultimately stopped trying. They took her to the back immediately and did a chest X-ray since I informed them she has a heart condition and kidney condition. They place her in a kennel that constantly blew oxygen in to help her breathe. They informed me that from the X-ray her heart is no longer heart shaped but circle shaped and there is a tons of fluid surrounding it. The veterinarian came right out and stated (without me asking) she is in pain and suffering right now, it is probably the time to consider to let her go. This straight forwardness is something my husband and I appreciate although it broke our hearts to hear those words in reference to our 6 year old baby girl. The veterinarian also said that another option would be to transfer her somewhere where she will be in an oxygen ventilated kennel for the night to be seen by a cardiologist the next day, however, the veterinarian also stated the clinically the odds of her making it through the night were extremely low. After some tears and calling my husband to come to the vet, we decided that as much as we want to keep her with us it was better for her to say goodbye. They brought her to us wrapped up in a fuzzy blanket like she loves and we spent 15 minutes with her telling her how much we love her and how sorry we are before they gave her the injection. They allowed us to make the decision whether we stayed with her during the injection or not. We stayed and witnessed her last breath. The veterinarian was very informative of what to expect before and during the injection process. They allowed and encouraged us to grieve where we found fit best for us and as long as we needed even after she was clinically gone. We decided to have her cremated and chose a beautiful urn with a picture frame. Not that the price mattered for us, the cost for the cremation and urn wasn't too bad. Thank you Dr. Adwell and team for your professionalism, and loving caring heart. I only wish you had been able to get to know Maggie before this.

They're more than happy to prescribe meds to calm your anxious pet down before visits which is 100% necessary in my case. They gave us a great referral when my cat was diagnosed with a heart murmur. They listen, give you a bunch of options, and also give their personal experience with their own pets. I often use that as a gauge of what tests I want to run and I never feel like they're just trying to get money out of me. I'm writing this because of the amount of time the staff spent with my cat today. He didn't have his usual calming meds and was very vocal about how little he wanted to be there. They gave us so much grace and extra time to make sure we could do as much of the exam in office as possible. And when they needed a couple more things but my cat was too stressed there, they set me up with everything I needed to take samples at home and bring back to them for testing (also gave me the option of getting more calming meds and bringing my cat back when he was calmer). They're (seemingly!) happy to explain things thoroughly and I greatly appreciate that.

It was a rough way to start somewhere new, but the care we received was exceptional. I've now seen three vets -- Dr. Reid, Dr. Green, and Dr. Worley -- and they have all been wonderful. I'm the pet parent who asks a hundred questions (plus a few on the way out), and they've all been patient, thorough, and genuinely kind. I've never felt rushed or dismissed, and their quick responses over email and text have meant so much. The front staff is always warm and helpful, and they've worked hard to fit me in whenever an unexpected visit came up. I recommend this practice wholeheartedly -- and already have. When Dr. Hunter whom had previously seen Annie heard that she would have to wait two more days in her condition, he chose not to let her suffer even one more day. He was on vacation with his own family at the time, yet he still made the long trip back to Richmond to be with us and to peacefully end Annie's suffering-- that's the kind of compassion you rarely find. From the moment he arrived, it was clear he wasn't just there to do a job. He was gentle, warm, and truly present with our family in one of the hardest moments we've faced. He treated Annie with so much tenderness, and he treated us with the same care, giving us the time and space we needed to say goodbye. Dr. Hunter didn't have to leave his vacation for us. He did it because he genuinely cared -- about Annie, and about easing our family's pain.
