Decent prices. Can usually walk in without an appointment. Eva is definitely the best. Some others are just ok.

La Vie Nails - Second visit: better photo of raw skin on side nail beds. Very painful.

La Vie Nails

(2 reviews)

I was so very disappointed by my two experiences at La Vie Nails that I added the business to Yelp…read morespecifically so that I could leave this review. 2 stars instead of 1 as I have fiends who still like this salon, and it could have been worse. I went in for "dip" nails as I am trying to grow out my length. My first visit, there was little to no attention paid to my cuticles, so the dip didn't go all the way to the bottom of my nail-bed. After a week, I decided that I was disappointed enough to get them re-done. My second attempt (hopefully to fix the nails) was absolutely awful. The esthetician filed down into the sides of my actual nail beds, filing into my raw fingers and completely removing my nail and exposing the bare tender skin under my nail. I was never asked about the shape or desired length, and each time I pulled away in pain, the lady just started filing again. When finished, I discussed the situation with another member of the staff, who offered to add tips to my nails, and attempt to fix the botched job. Since this was already the second try, I declined and was still asked to pay. I paid and left. I returned 29 minutes later to ask for my money back, and I was told they would need to remove the dip in order to refund me. I said no, showed them my sore red fingers again, and was given my money back. So 2 stars: it could have been worse. I will never return again.

They clarified asking "just a clean up and shape" and I said yes. When getting the manicure she seemed distracted and often moving her eyes off my hands while still working on my nails with sharp tools. She had cleaned up all of my nails, however she had only filed one hand and had already moved on to massaging my hands. When she said we were all done I asked if she was able to file my other hand as she hadn't yet and asked for just a little more shape and evenness. She said that she had done both hands and she shaped them but my nails were longer on that hand so that's why it looked like that. I asked her again to just file my nails slightly and she picked up the file and ever so lightly started to "file" my nails. This did nothing, she continued for about 30 seconds and then said "ok" and began to clean up her station. I sat back for a second and ended up asking for the nail file as my nails were catching on my clothing. There is no shape whatsoever to my nails, and I still have pieces of skin hanging from a few nails. She gave a nice hand massage but I didn't go for a hand massage I went to get my nails cleaned up and shaped (evenly). Overall I wasn't a fan of the service provided.

Initially I wanted to go to this spa for their salt room. However, I was not very impressed with…read morethe size of the room, and it lacked a peaceful setup. I ended up still getting a pedicure, where the lady ended up cutting my foot twice! One of the cuts lasted a whole week and made me very nervous about contracting something or risking infection. Thankfully, it did not. The lady was not friendly and obviously distracted during my pedicure since she ended up cutting me two times. The photo below indicates the worse of the cut, which made my foot tender and difficult to walk and perform sports in my active lifestyle. They were very accommodating after I asked for some sort of adjustment to my final bill, which they finally did agree to. I will not go back even though my daughter's haircut turned out great.

I had the best experience here on the weekend! My husband bought me the "Parental Escape" wellness…read morepackage for my birthday, which includes the 50-minute Exhalo scalp treatment that includes hand and arm treatment, a 45-minute relaxing Swedish massage, and one hour in the salt room. I arrived about 10 minutes early on Saturday morning, checked in, hung up my coat, and waited on the small bench. I didn't have to take off my boots, but I should have grabbed a paid of the sandals at the front, as there were none in the back. It's a much smaller space than I expected, with the "spa" part is at the back, hair on the right, and nails on the left. I only saw one small room for massages and spa treatments and another one across from it for the salt room. The front has all of the products and gifts, including a bunch of local brands, but it's also where people check in, pay, and wait, so it's very tight and makes it hard to look at the products, as well as social distance. I had Maureen for both my scalp treatment and my massage, and she was great! She asked me which one I wanted first. I wasn't sure and asked which one was more relaxing, and she said usually the scalp one gets her, so I did massage, salt room, then scalp. The massage was great and nice, harder pressure like I prefer. I asked what the difference was between the relaxing Swedish massage and the RMT massage and she said the RMT massage typically has more pressure and tries to get out knots. The RMT can also be claimed for insurance, while the relaxing massage cannot). Maureen was kind enough to ask if I wanted to do the front of my legs and other parts of my body instead of hands and arms because those were already included in the scalp treatment and this way we could maximize the massage. Really appreciated this suggestion! I wish I paid more attention to the package details because I thought it was an hour long instead of 45 minutes. It goes by quickly! The salt room is also much smaller than I expected, but I enjoyed the vibe of the room with the soft orange and blue hues. There are two anti-gravity chairs, but I was the only one booked in there for that time, so I could wear whatever clothing I liked. It was my first time and I was told comfy clothing is fine, but some people wear bikinis and swimwear because it's better to expose your problematic skin areas to the healing salt. I was also told to bring snacks, which I did but didn't end up eating, and instead I was allowed to just take off my mask for a little bit to breathe in the medical grade salt that gets pumped out. Again, I was the only one in there with the door shut, otherwise I absolutely would have kept it on. I also got a robe and a blanket, and had the option of turning the heat of the electric fireplace up or down. You could also get a massage in there, though I'm sure the protocol with the mask and fireplace is different. Maureen said she'd knock before coming in, but I only fell asleep for about 10 minutes (it's hard to relax!), but it was nice. I would have napped longer if I could. There's no clock in there, so it's a great way to unplug (minus the couple of photos I took at the beginning when I was getting settled). The only downside is that the room is right across from some of the hair stations, so I could hear the hair dryers and conversations over the relaxing music. The scalp treatment was like nothing I've ever had before. They massage warm essential oils onto your neck, shoulders, and scalp. They then wrap your hair in a heated towel while you get a hydration face mask and get more massage, plus your hands in wax with gloves on. Once they take the towel off, you get some cool drops (oils? serum?) massaged into your scalp. Some of the hot stuff, like the towel behind your neck and the wax, are really hot, so be prepared for that, especially if you're sensitive to heat, though the burning sensation goes away pretty quickly. You can definitely come out of this one a little woozy, so take a few minutes before sitting up and leaving to drive home. Maureen was such a pleasure and really took great care of this new mama. She was really understanding of all of my issues, like tense shoulders, lower back pain, postpartum hair loss, etc. I enjoyed it all so much that I ended up buying my husband a gift certificate for the same package! Just need to remember that the tip is not included. Hot tip: If you're looking for an actual parental escape, don't book on a Sunday, as it's family day at the spa.

Now there are several locations all over the city, but there was a time when I had to haul my butt all the way down to Barrhaven to shop at Sally's. I rarely go to this location anymore because others are more convenient for me, but I find that this one is better stocked and they will have items that are sold out at other locations. So Sally's is open to the public, but they sell items that skew more to those in the beauty industry, like haircutting implements, lots of nail/manicure supplies, hair colorants and developers. They also carry cosmetics, hair care and hair styling tools. Prices are reasonable. They have a membership card that you purchase and you get the members' price on items which is a bit lower than non-member prices. They have special memberships for people in the beauty industry as well. They have brands of haircare products that are exclusive to them like "Beyond the Zone" and "Ion" which are quite good. They also carry cosmetics brands that are exclusive to them like "Sally Girl." Other brands of cosmetics that they sell that are hard to find elsewhere in Canada (in-store) are "Palladio Beauty" and "Femme Couture." For nail polish, they have a really good selection of "China Glaze" among other brands. Sally's also tends have items first when they start to become trendy. Remember the holograhic nail polish craze? They were the first to have all those pretty oil slick colours. They were also the first to carry magnetic eyelashes in-store in Canada. Oh and remember magnetic nail polish? Where there were magnetic shavings in the polish so after you paint your nails you would hold a special magnetic against your nail and a star or chevron pattern would appear? Sally's was again the first place you could get them at a brick and mortar store. Oh I thought those were the bee's knees and I bought every single colour and every magnetic design, lol. This location is in a strip mall. Lots of free parking.

I think for two packets of toner, as well as the developer, it ran around $40. This is super reasonable and over all, it was a great experience.
