To be frank I can understand why because this place has class and really is of a very high calibre indeed. The prices here can be a bit steep for student tastes but this doesn't matter as the food and service mean that it is worth every penny of your cash. The staff here are very pleasant and really professional meaning that the food arrives promptly. The surroundings are retro and don 70s style patterned wallpaper with an old gas fire and heirloom-like lamps which make you feel oddly at home, as though you went for pizza at your nan's house. And yet the open-plan nature of the layout with stairs on either side of a large open space leading up to a more cosy eating and drinking area give it a contemporary look. The bar stretches the length of the room ready for the buzz of people, clamouring for the cheap booze (spirits under £2.40) and DJ nights until 3am! With pizza and a bottle of Peroni or such like for under £8 I'm certainly not complaining! The Pizza Parlour is really a small restaurant that offers pizza and pasta in a more refined, but still casual, environment than many of us are used to unless going to Pizza Express. The Pizza Parlour is just as tasty as Pizza Express but not nearly as dear with it super size pizza - enough for three - only setting you back £11 for most toppings. There is also beer and wine which makes it some like more grown up experience but all of this can delivered if you still want to slob about in your pyjamas. The evening menu is your usual variety of pizza, pasta and meat, and all the mains are less than £20, so it's still reasonable. I know a few people have said that Maranto's isn't what it used to be, but then Lark Lane isn't what it used to be either. Attracting a different crowd these days, the businesses have no doubt had to change to keep up, and maybe that is why regulars at Maranto's feel as though standards have slightly slipped. There's plenty of seating inside and it was reassuring to see a few other tables of solo diners; let's face it, what better solo meal than a few slices of pizza and a beer? I dropped my bag at a table and went up to the counter to order. They have a few deals on at the various branches and one of Bold Street's best is 2 x slices and 1 x beer or wine for £6. I went for the pepperoni and a goats cheese with roasted veggies, plus a bottle of Brooklyn. The slices were heated up and then served on a paper plate - a proper way to eat pizza. Both combinations were excellent and had a good balance between topping and crust. It might not be the best pizza I've ever had (hello, Rudy's in Manchester...) but I'd definitely be a regular if I lived in the area. For now it will have to be for flying visits!

Also, check the student deals if you need to fill a huge gap or have thrown the diet out of the window. Student meal: 10" pizza with two toppings, chips, two drinks...And a chicken fillet burger for £6.50! That is a serious amount of fastfood. We're not just friends now, we're blood brothers.

Maybe it's because I'm a pizza freak and the Shiraz Special (12" pizza with every topping on) satisfies my endless belly, or maybe it's the entertainment while you're waiting for your food, but this is always the last stop for me on a night out before I hop in a taxi. A typical takeaway, it serves your usual array of pizzas, chips, cheesy chips (which if you've never had before WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?) and burgers, as well as meal deals which seem like such a good idea whether you're drunk or not. The staff are always friendly and endeavour to remember your orders and name if you're a regular. As Shiraz is right next to a taxi rank, sitting there in the early hours of the morning is never dull. You get an endless stream of drunks staggering through the door and I'd be very surprised if I ever went in there without seeing someone in fancy dress!
