If you are considering sending your sweet baby angel to this middle school, I strongly encourage you to instead consider literally any other option. Homeschool. Wilderness survival camp. A monastery. Anything. First of all, the drop-off line? A lawless wasteland. I have seen more organization at a Black Friday sale in 2007. No cones. No guidance. Second, the cafeteria. My son Clayton Mae told me the pizza "bends in ways pizza should not bend." I don't know what that means, but I don't like it. The milk cartons are apparently either frozen solid or suspiciously warm. There is no in-between. Academically? My child came home with homework that required "critical thinking." I'm sorry, since when are thirteen-year-olds expected to have fully formed frontal lobes? Do better. I would also like to formally address the teacher situation. There are kind teachers. There are strict teachers. And then there are teachers at this school who act like my child personally offended them by existing. One in particular seems to believe that smiling is a federal crime. My son asked a clarifying question and was met with a sigh so dramatic I thought we were about to enter a Shakespeare monologue. These kids are thirteen. Not hostile corporate employees. Now let's talk about the principal. I naively assumed that if a student had a concern, there would be, I don't know, listening involved? Silly me. Instead, students are handed "reflection sheets." Reflection sheets. As if filling out a worksheet titled "What Could I Have Done Differently?" magically solves every issue. It's giving "copy and paste discipline system." Zero dialogue. Zero accountability. Just paper. And the science class? Apparently the curriculum is: 1. Walk in. 2. Receive packet. 3. Complete packet. 4. Receive another packet. At this point I'm fairly certain the packets are raising my child. I don't even think the teacher speaks unless it's to say, "It's in the packet." Then there's the wood shop teacher. I'm not saying anything legally actionable. I am simply saying the energy in that room feels less "educational mentor" and more "I learned life lessons exclusively the hard way." The vibe is intense. The motivational speeches sound like parole advice. Overall, the leadership shrugs, the packets multiply, and the mean streaks run unchecked. I did not pack fresh organic apple slices every morning for this level of dysfunction.

Grizzly Academy changes lives! I have been a mentor twice…read more Students live there. They live & learn military style. They are in different platoons. After a while, approx, 2 months, cadets (students) get mentor visits and family visits. I truly cherished these visits. The enthusiasm and the wonderful stories of helping out n the community (community service) made me proud. I saw my cadet change. Change for the better. She is a better person, both academically and emotionally. She runs! She learned that at Grizzly. Give Grizzly a chance. It helps in so many ways.

Went to a Volleyball tournament today for JV Boys Volleyball. This school had the worst…read moresportsmanship I have ever seen. Cheering things like "Sub him out" when their own team made a mistake. And "we like free points" when the other team makes a mistake. Very rude and unprofessional. They got servied a slice of humble pie when they made an early exit in the tournament.

Our experience has been phenomenal…read more My daughter started in Tiny Wonders during the pandemic and is finishing her first year in the preschool program right now. From start to finish, developmentally, she has flourished. We saw a noticeable change in her language as soon as she started, and since then, she has learned to share, use her words to talk about her feelings, work through conflict, put on/take off clothes, independently eat her lunch/snack, and more. She has developed friendships and relationships with the teachers. SLOCA is not only incredibly competent curriculum-wise, but they are amazing human beings. They are truly a family. When my dad died, I was greeted with hugs and tears and was told that I did not need to complete my volunteer hours that semester. My daughter's teachers even came to her third birthday party. All of the staff, teachers, and admin are warm and caring. And the children feel this! Huge shoutouts to Miss Alana, Miss Debbie, Miss Sutton, Mrs. Molly, and especially the program director, Mrs. Eades. Incredible incredible humans. I have so much love for SLOCA and am excited for my son to start there in the fall!

Only problem I had there was the principal at the time who was a major king kong jerk off. He would single kids out and go out of his way to make them look and feel like idiots. You can tell the staff love what they do, and the children absolutely flourish under their guidance. We especially appreciate how the school weaves hands-on learning into the day: from seasonal arts and crafts to preparing food together in class. Our son comes home talking about the bread they baked or the soup they made, and it's clear he's learning valuable life skills while having fun. It's also been wonderful to see him grow socially -- the community of parents is tight-knit and welcoming, and the kids build strong friendships in a nurturing, screen-free environment. The teachers care so deeply about their students, and there is a beautiful dialogue between teacher and parents so that each child is seen and held. The academics are lovely and meet our kids right where they are in their development. And the reason we love it the most, and would recommend the school to anyone is the way they teach to the whole child. My kids are growing up with incredible social-emotional skills, awareness of the environment/stewards of nature, and have such a gorgeous community of friends and family to lean on. The festivals are also such a treat, and I would say even if you aren't at the school make it out to the Winter Faire!
