**I am originally from Southern California where I can argue some of the best Mexican food resides** We were making a road trip from Southern Cal to PA and our route took us through Lexington (which I didn't even realize was a real place). We got in kind of late and wanted dinner so looked a yelp. Surprisingly there seems to be quite a few Mexican food places in Lexington. We trusted the Yelp reviews sod Los Jalapeños. TRY.IT. The service is incredible. It's a walk up order place but once you order, you sit down and they bring everything else to you including free chips and salsa. The waiters are extremely friendly and truly care if your experience was good. I had the child relleno plate and my husband had one of the mixed taco plate. The salsa was probably my favourite part but the actual entrees were delicious. I just wish they had more vegetarian options (chile relleno was pretty much their only option). The beans were great and the flavour on the food was wonderful too! read more

Free chips and two types of salsa. Red not eaten but the green one was amazing had 2 bowls of it. Torta- carnitas was delicious. Meat was tender and very well cooked. Not dry at all. Bread was toasted and warm. Wet Smoothered burrito was good. Red sauce wasn't spicy but had great flavor. One was asada and other was alpastor. (Asked for no onion, but had some. Only complaint) Sope was good. It was thick so a little too bland- wouldn't have again. Taco alpastor- delicious and simple Red rice had no flavor. Rated by full on mexicans. Who would have expected a stellar authentic Mexican restaurant deep in the heart of Nebraska? Hands? Not me, that is until I had occasion to spend a bit of time there and discover the strong Mexican (and Salvadoran as well) population in this burg. How and why, I have no idea and it's not my main concern. What is of interest, then, is how this place stands and delivers. In a word (or so), exceedingly well. This place cares about getting it right, which is frankly rarer than it should be in any given city and this place is the real deal all the way right down to their respective knucklebones. They take pains to mention it and make it so and service is stellar, easily the best I've had on my annual trip this year. Drink selection is also fantastic, which is rare, but most welcome. I had 6 of the tacos. Of those, the carnitas was the best, followed by the al pastor (not the best I've had but very interesting) and then the asada. The hot sauce was also fabulous. Wife had a carnitas platter, which she enjoyed a lot. Here's a measure of how authentic it was: no silverware. Nope. You eat that thing up with tortillas and your hands, baby and that's it. Very nice. No super convenient, but that's how they roll. I'm down. No one got any and it was straight with me. My kid had the chicken nugget and fry plate. Fries were again excellent and the nuggets...well, let's just say it was very nice of them to have it as an offering. Is this worth jumping off I-80 for? If you're a fan of this food or staying in town anyway, absolutely. If you're not so into the actual Mexican part in your Mexican food, you may reconsider, but I encourage you to jump out of your comfort zone, if that's true for you. They do this right and they do it well and it serves as a great introduction into what this culture can offer cuisine-wise. Needless to say, far and away the best we had not only this trip, but perhaps at any time of the course of any of these annual trips. read more

This place is an amazing spot to visit on a long drive! it is a hole-in-the wall Mexican restaurant in a small town and it did not Disappoint! Overall experience was ok. All the menu items are written on the wall with Sharpie marker, they only served packaged beverages (no fountain drinks), and the ice machine was empty. It took quite some time to receive chips and salsa upon arrival, and the service the remainder of the time was just ok as well. The food was quite tasty, though, and my dad highly recommends the tamales. Just be patient and go in knowing it's going to be quite the "raw" restaurant experience. read more

One of our favorite meals of a cross-country trip! Skip the chain restaurants and the fast food and enjoy this super authentic Mexican food. You'll meet at least 3 members of the owners' family and a bunch of locals before you leave, and you'll get amazing, beautiful, tasty food. If I heard correctly, this food reflects the state of Tlaxcala, a very tiny state in Mexico about an hour east of Mexico City. Started with the standard basket of chips and a mild chunky salsa. They had bottles of a hotter commercial sauce on the table. I had the chile relleno plate, and I added a gordita and a sope. I'm a big eater, but this was far too much food for me, so I saved half for a second meal. The relleno plate came with two rellenos and my choice of tortillas--I went with corn. The waiter asked if I wanted green sauce or hot sauce, I said yes. He returned with with a nice warm green salsa and a muddy brown hot sauce--very tasty, and very hot. The sope is like a tostada on a very thick tortilla, more of a cake of masa, deep fried, and stacked with good stuff. The gordita is similar, except that after frying the cake they split it open and stuff it with the good stuff. Both were among the best I've had. read more

What a gem! We were just driving through the state when we encountered this very tasty Mexican joint. Shared a smothered carne asada burrito, and a chicken quesadilla with my husband. The food at this place was solid! I had the enchilada plate (3) with chicken, al pastor, and beef as well as a single carnitas taco. My wife ordered the Gordita and a Sope. We also shared an order of guacamole which was awesome! The sope was homemade and very good as well. I went for the green tomatillo sauce for my enchiladas which was ok. Next time I would try the red. Definitely better than other options in the area. The portions were big! We had sooo much leftover, our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomaches. Loved the photo menu on the wall so you can see exactly whet you are ordering. Oh yeah... and ask for the spicy green salsa. We were passing through Lexington, NE on our way home from Moab, UT to Chicago. We were trying to make it to Omaha before we stopped for the night but it was getting late and we were hungry. We wanted something that was NOT fast food so turned to the internet and ran across Los Jalapeños. Based on all the great reviews we figured we'd give it a try. So glad we did. Food was amazing....Everything we had was great (torta, burrito, tacos). All their meats had great flavoring. Our favorite, however was their marinated pork. This restaurant embodies everything that is typical about great food in Nebraska. The decour is unpretentious and makes little to no sense, with a mishmash of western and wood paneling and concrete floors. The exterior gives you no indication that there is good food inside - in fact you might think it looks a bit like the front of a truck stop. It's next to a tiny Pentecostal church with a pastor who will come outside and yell at you if you park in front of his establishment. But once you get your plate of food, you will be glad that you came here. This restaurant is truly authentic Mexican for the Mexican palate. It is frequented by Mexicans and you get the impression that is their target demographic; you can get brains, tongue, or intestines if you want - or, if like me, you are less adventurous, you can order a plate of tacos or a burrito or tamales. If it's Mexican food, you can probably get it here. This is a hidden gem. read more

Thoroughly enjoyed our meal here. The salsa, rice and beans were all perfect and the chicken in my delicately beautiful tacos was seasoned perfectly and so melt in your mouth tender with not a trace of gristle or fat in it. Lexington, NE has a wide variety of Mexican restaurants which all claim to be "authentic", so I asked the desk clerk at my hotel for a recommendation, & fortunately for me she recommended this place. I was greeted at the door by an employee who was carrying my free chips and salsa. Then he seated me took my order for the enchilada plate. While I waited for my dinner I munched on the chips and the salsa and it was good, but certainly not spicy. When the food came, it looked so good I couldn't wait to try it. The enchilada plate had refried beans and rice and there was more than enough. It was all fresh and hot and I enjoyed every bite. Total for the platter was $8 and another $2 for a bottle of pop. I think all the other reviews were rigged. This place is awful! Don't do it! Worse than bad. Super slow. Not clean! And if that's not enough, they keep their food in a room by the bathroom and boxes were on the floor with blood dripping from the box and puddled on the floor! Save your money! Wish I had! read more
