When I came to San Juan last in 2014 I swore that I would return and get some more mofongo here…read more. and I did! I may not be here all the time (though I'd love to be), but when I come.. I need to go here. If it seems that I base some of my travel (*most of my travel) around food, well..that may be true..!
Conveniently located in Viejo (Old San Juan) you can find this little kiosk at the plaza de colon, the central square in the old part of town with the statue of the guy on a tall post. Can't miss it - truly. The kiosk has a couple of quick, delicious (to go) options available .. hence the punny name.
Thirsty? Get some fresh, tangy lemonade. Or better yet.. buy a fresh young coconut.. they will drill a hole in it for you and give you a straw. So good! Hungry? Well.. listen up. Get an alcapurria or two, these things are so good you'll probably want another. They are essentially fried oblong things filled with meat, cheese and surrounded by a mixture of plantain and yucca. Crispy but also soft on the outside with a savory meat filling.. quite addicting!
Then, mofongo wise they have several options which is kindof neat if you want to change it up. To start you pick your base, either regular mashed plantain, sweet mashed plantain, mashed yucca, or trifongo; ra combination of all three. Then, you pick your topping.. I recommend the beef paired with regular green plantain. The veggie is quite good as well, it has several different kinds of marinated beans in the mix.
