The owner was rude over some plantains. The manner in which she handled the situation was aggressive and unprofessional. From her tone, to her body language, was just too much - over plantains at that. People have mentioned she's rude but I didn't believe it. Triple D. A very large flat screen TV in the dining area was tuned to Univision, showing the World Cup soccer playoffs. The game was Ghana verses the United States. At 1630 hours, business was light. We had our floor swept by the owner. When we ordered (her son was our server), she put down the broom and walked back to the kitchen. Antojito Salvadoreno is a nice combination dish which my wife and I shared. I've added a picture of that part of the menu so you can see the name of the items on the plate and the price. Yuca deep fried was good- moist but cooked through. I liked mine dipped in habanero picante sauce. Chicharron is thick with substantial meat veins and seasoned well. Cabbage salted and crisp. Carne is an ample portion, seasoned as a dark, deep flavor, cut small as in about 3/8 inch squares. The pupusas we ordered was a carnita and queso variety. Paired with the cabbage, bite on bite, is where you'll find the complement / contrast flavor. I ordered two more of the pork and cheese pupusas for the reason stated above. Great place to go when you are tired of the standard Tex-Mex fare. The Curtido was tasty and not too spicy. The pupusas were also great!. I got the Queso and Squash (my favorite by far) and the Pork and Beans pupusas. Prices are extremely reasonable and they even packed mine up to go so I could get back to the office. Don't be intimidated if you are the only gringo in the place. The staff was friendly and made suggestions on what they thought I would like. I will definitely be going back. read more

Los Compadres Pupuseria is an excellent Salvadoran restaurant that satisfies every time. I've had pupusa's in several pupuseria's in the Port Arthur, Houston, and New Orleans areas and Los Compadres easily competes with any restaurant I've tried. While I've tried a few of there non-pupusa dishes (with no negative experience), I will primarily focus on the pupusa experience. First of all, upon entering, Los Compadres feels like a legitimate Salvadoran family pupuseria. Not some hip, gentrified flavor of the month, but a place a Mom and Pop (or Mama y Papa, as it were) opened up when they came to the states. At the same time, it's clean and has an excellent homegrown vibe to it. If you go there for lunch, you will most definitely find construction workers, vegetation workers, as well as families (the former two, by the way, are always excellent indicators that you're getting a high-value, authentic experience) dining with you. The ladies that have waited on us have always been very sweet and really helpful; again, this feels like a family-owned establishment. The only thing that detracts from it's "street-cred" is the fact that the "aguas" beverages are in actual drink dispensers as opposed to the customary big plastic jug from which they are traditionally served. Alas... Speaking of the aguas, one caveat may be that Los Compadres serves (a very excellent) Mexican-style (rice based) horchata as opposed to the traditional Salvadoran horchata which is made from morro. Being a big Mexican horchata, I loved it. Not too sweet, not too watery. They also have jamaica and tamarindo on tap and have been told by my fellow diners that they are also quite good. They offer Central American style chips and salsa. The chips are a little thicker than your typical Tex-Mex restaurant fare, but have an excellent flavor. They offer two salsa: "la que pica y la que no" (the one with bite and the one without) or spicy or mild. I've always enjoyed the flavor of both and on e of my co-workers (who is a BIG salsa guy) has gone so far as to eat/drink the spicy salsa with a spoon, but there you have it. The Main Event: Pupusas! They offer a great variety; you can get any combination of the traditional bean, and/or cheese, and/or chicharron (pork...sorta). But they also offer lorroco (http://goo.gl/esBGJ) and calabaza (squash...sorta) both of which are lovely and worth a try. I get mine loaded up with all 5 ingredients and they're great. They only have a mild curtido (cabbage relish), but it's always fresh and quite nice. Again, Los Compadres is an excellent value and a great authentic experience. This is my go-to for pupusas. It is a little drive from my house, but the options are limited for pupusas, but I would still go to this place regardless. The pupusas are always fresh and made to order. The waiters speak some English, but sometimes communication isn't the clearest. There are more salsas available for the pupusas if you can translate the request to the waitress. Haven't tried anything else besides the plantains, which aren't my favorite, but when I go there it is because I want pupusas so that is what I stick with. read more

VERY much enjoyed this place! We were a bit skeptical at first but once we walked in they family that runs it was welcoming and helpful esp since we had a vegetarian in our group. The pupusa was good but the service was horrible.. I had to wait one hour before i had my to go order... I watched as everyone that came after me get to enjoy their food way before i got to even go home with my food... I order the beef taco which was nasty... Dont waste your money on that... The plaintain w cream and cheese was good...The cabbage salad really didnt have flavor... I was told that my order took a long time because they only have two fryers which i can understand they had to go orders that came in before me but what i cant understand is why the people that came in After me had their order before me... The menu is only in spanish ... I guess the pupusas were good and so were the plaintains. Owner offered to refund my money for only the fried plaintain($2) because that was the reason supposedly my order took a long time... Heard her yelling in the back but i think she was upset because i spoke up... Front cAshier girl had a smirk on her face like my wasted time there was nothing...
