It's enchanting at night watching the lighted towers of the old cathedral standing watch over the Merida night sky...sitting at a candle lit table with cool Yucatan breezes blowing. It's a far remove from the hustle and bustle of the narrow, crowded downtown streets and the lively plaza. I ordered a pumpkin seed-based salsa which was prepared table side in a stone vessel. My friend ordered the grilled fish with rice, pickled carrots, onions and sauces. Both were delicious. We also had nice drinks, red wine sangria, and beer. What was perhaps the best feature of the place is the excellent waitstaff who are bilingual, who are helpful with making you feel comfortable, who provide charming conversation and tips, and who are generally well trained in hospitality. Such a far cry from the dour and arrogant wait staff typically found in Washington DC restaurants. This is a good place for a quiet escape from the plaza crowd.

It's located in the grand lobby of the Viva Merida boutique hotel, surrounded by 150 year old arabesque architecture and a roof which opens up to the night time stars and air when the weather is nice. Very attentively prepared food, one of our favorite Merida dining experiences. The portion sizes are moderate, which we prefer(quality over quantity), the flavors are well developed and the plating is visually pleasing like any finer restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised when they brought us complimentary bread with a chilled zuchinni garlic puree, think like a thick zuchinni gazpacho but it actually tastes good. Very refreshing on a warm evening. The house salad was anything but mundane, coming with mixed greens, cubed cucumber, cubed apple, cubed celery, and sliced kiwi. It was fantastic and the portion was generous. We also ordered fish tacos and these come as a pair. The breading was light and crispy, slightly oily in a good way, and served piping hot!
