CatRangers - Babys n Me

Came here on a Saturday after looking for places where I could adopt a Maine Coon cat. This place…read morecame up with about 10 adults and 10 kittens, which is a huge amount since shelters usually don't have any, so I immediately planned to go that weekend. I called and emailed them as recommended on the site and I got very fast and friendly responses. It's up in Buford, GA but totally worth the drive, it's a house that you park in the back of. Going in, you should go through the back entrances. If you want to see the kittens, which are in the basement, you either have to make an appointment with the fosters or go on Saturday or Sunday. The adult cats are reachable through the main back door and are always at the house. there's about 65 cats living in a big house all free roaming together. This is the nicest cat shelter I've ever been to and really should be the way all cat shelters should be but sadly cannot because of funding. As soon as you enter it has the same calm vibes as a cat cafe. Cats also did not try to make a run for it when I opened doors, they all seemed calm and relaxed and happy. Less friendly cats are marked with red collars so you know to leave them alone or be very careful. A surprising number of them reacted in a friendly manner either bumping my hand for pets or coming to investigate. The house has five rooms all filled with cats and is very clean, all the cat equipment such as the litter boxes and food bowls were also very clean. A volunteer immediately greeted us and when we told her we wanted to adopt she showed us around the rooms and introduced cats she thought would be a good fit for us. I think they also welcome people just coming to visit as well so the cats can have people to interact with. This is a great cat shelter and I wish all shelters could be like this. If you are looking to adopt a cat I would highly recommend coming here since they have such a large variety of cats and you get a better feel for their personalities since they're not in cages all day but rather a more natural environment. They're adoption fee is $150 for adults and you need to fill out a long form and provide two references. They'll then do phone screenings with you and your references and then drop off the cat at your house so they can do a house check.

Wonderful support during the fostering process, very caring team about their cats up for adoption.read more

With that experience in mind, I would strongly recommend avoiding this shelter before wasting your time and emotions. I found an Australian Shepherd mix puppy I wanted to adopt and submitted all the necessary paperwork. After more than a week of unanswered calls and messages, I finally reached Tina, who confirmed I was first in line. She explained the puppy had a slight limp and needed a vet check before we could meet him. She also expressed concerns about the breed being around my two young boys, ages 3 and 5, despite my experience raising dogs and my children having grown up around them. Another week and a half passed with virtually no communication. I had to repeatedly chase down updates and eventually schedule the meeting through another employee. I drove all the way to Cumming with my two excited boys, only to be brought into a small 10x10 room to meet the puppy. He was understandably cautious around strangers but was gentle, explored the room, and even gave us puppy kisses. The trainer immediately characterized his behavior as fear and said he was looking for an escape. We weren't allowed to walk him or interact in a more open environment. It felt like the decision had already been made before we even arrived. At the end of the meeting, we were told they weren't comfortable approving the adoption but would discuss it with the director and call the next day. That call never came. Instead, at 8:30 p.m., while I was putting my soon-to-be-disappointed children to bed, I received a TEXT rejecting our adoption. I understand shelters must make responsible placement decisions, but the lack of communication, questionable evaluation process, and failure to extend even the courtesy of a promised phone call were incredibly unprofessional. I have a fenced yard, work from home, and years of experience raising dogs. If my children's ages and the breed were dealbreakers, why put us through weeks of waiting and an emotional meet-and-greet? A frustrating and disappointing experience from start to finish. I won't be returning or recommending Furkids to anyone.
