Found this place using Yelp! It's the only true, old school hobby and game store in the area. The owners are friendly and helpful. I have not built a real model in 40 years and had lots of questions and they answered them all and gave me some good tips. The prices are good, and they have a pretty good selection. Love the new store. The lot is spacious and offers more parking space for customers. The store setup seems to have more variety than previous. There are more models offered ie, DND, Warhammer. The paints and models are comparable to some offered in amazon and if you can't wait for Amazon, buying it here is a quicker alternative. Napa is lucky to have a shop like this. I'm grateful that they were able to move successfully out of the downtown location into a much better one. They are extremely helpful, and it is just so awesome to see people playing board games in the back and the diverse selection of materials that they sell for all hobby enthusiasts. Sometimes, even an elusive Minitank WW 2 period miniature is available, as well as Airfix 1/72-scale figures for the Civil War and World War I or World War II. For hobby shop, they are not very well organized, and they don't have a great selection. It really looks more like someone's antique shop or possibly a garage sale. The whole look of the place is messy and disorganized. No one even asked if I needed any help, even though there were only about two customers in the whole place, SELECTION: like I said, there really is not a wide variety of things to choose from. I came mostly looking for gaming material and found they were lacking in quantity and variety. I didn't notice their Lego selection, which was not well organized and pretty underwhelming to me. The whole place just felt like I just organize warehouse and so I don't really know if they had a great selection, because it was a organize well enough to tell. SERVICE: disappointing to say the least. With only me, and one other person in the store, the guy at the register couldn't even manage to look up or say hi, even though I walked by him two times and looked in his direction. He was too focused, talking to his buddy, and that was just a poor customer service. COST: what he did have, the prices were reasonable. This is the year of our lord 2018, Drake has been on the billboard top 100 for so long even he forgot about Dre, and more school kids today know how to handle a Glock than a sprue cutter or a bottle of Tamiya model cement. And somehow, places like the Loose Caboose stay alive despite the scant attention paid by modern society, one where any technology introduced beyond 18 months is considered obsolete, and no one remembers the value of using your hands to create things. No, I don't mean picking at virtual bricks in Minecraft, writing P-code for your homemade CNC machine, or setting up descriptors for your Makerbot. Being able to cut, sand, glue and paint things to your satisfaction, and then scale it up to different applications (like. say, modding furniture from Ikea or giving Apple the finger while you cram a non-sanctioned SSD into your supposedly non-upgradeable MacBook Air) is a useful and important skill to have that some in society are just too happy to trade away for ridiculously petty reasons. "Bro, ain't nobody got time for that, just Instagram that". One of my objectives of the recent west coast road trip is to find places that sell plastic model kits. Most of the places that I used to frequent back in the NYC metro area keeled under several years ago with no replacements, and I remembered that due to the relative proximity of the West coast to Japan (oh, about 3 hours flight time less compared to the East Coast, even compensating for the opening of polar routes), there are a larger population of asian nerds (like me) who are more willing and able to support their local model/hobby shops - especially given that car culture is a much stronger thing in California, and there is nothing more satisfying than building a scaled version of that '64 Impala and their airbrushing your own details in...before working on the real thing in the driveway. During my last West Coast visit few years back - Las Vegas and the Silicon valley region are packed to the gills with people who are willing to build things for recreation, and there were a ton of options. There were a ton of options on Sahara Blvd in Vegas (last visited in 2009), and even walking down Lombard street near Van Ness blvd (2013), there were at least one shop that will sell you a Tamiya or Revell set by a friendly, chatty shop keeper. Imagine my surprise when I found out that there are only one shop left in Las Vegas, and most of those silicon valley firms have keeled over. However, that being said, it's not that hard to import sets from HobbySearch (1999.co.jp), and Revell Germany knows how to grab attention sending me catalogs to their kits - it's just a matter of ponying up. But what about the social aspects of model building? You do need to talk to experienced model makers and the people that supply them - well, my past experiences seem to indicate that the model shop owners run the gamut from introverts high on the aspergers/autism spectrum, or loquacious, kindhearted retirees who are both business-saavy and have stories to tell. So where does the Loose Caboose in Napa stand? The Loose Caboose is a treasure. They have assembled models on display (so you can see some examples of the handiwork from the community of builders out there, which would no-doubt contain a high percentage of wealthy retirees), and packs a massive selection of quality products (they actually managed to price Lego sets the same as the Lego stores, and kept the offerings reasonably up to date) - you actually see sets that go from 1:24 to 144 scale, and you might be able to find Herpa airliner display models in 1:500 scale as well - there are certainly RC planes, slot cars, magic cards (or Warhammer 40k figurines), and of course, trains (and may I add, at $500/train, the cost of buying dioramas and an entire room to do your layouts, you'll need your own trust fund to pay for that habit). The biggest treasure however is the owner, who is loquacious and pretty good on the uptake, especially when it comes to finding you the set that you need or giving you tips on how to complete the set. Why yes, there are plenty of artisans, craftsfolk and chefs in the Napa Valley, but it's not always the fine wine, the good food, or the paintings. Sometimes it can be that gorgeous plastic model on display, and this is a great place to get some. read more

I cannot fully explain in words the kind, caring way that both the staff at loose caboose helped my fiance and I with picking out a train set that worked with our budget and our interest. Not only do they not guide you to the most expensive products that they have but they offer multiple options to build your own train or buy a set that includes everything. In addition, the owner spoke with my fiance about his RC car, a great meetup of crawlers (a type of RC car) and how to fix a problem that he was having with his own crawler. They have much more than RC cars and trains (you gotta see it to believe it). I am 100% sure that we will be returning there. I bought a train set that I am ecstatic about. There's a various assortment of model cars, planes and trains to choose from. Also Legos, model paints (Tamiya!), diorama materials, and table top fantasy cards. I stopped by for some model railroad supplies and was impressed by the scope and inventory they carry ( and their prices compare favorably also). We've visited several times over the years and have always had a great experience. Oftentimes we are just window shopping, and the owner is helpful and friendly regardless of whether or not we open our wallets. We recently bought an entry level RC Plane for my 10yo son and the owner was nice enough to throw in an extra battery that he had on hand from a return. This place looked nice from the outside, and seems to have a pretty decent train selection. However, I was looking for helicopters and some parts but found barely anything. Everything had to be ordered. The guy working there, however, was VERY nice and helpful, and gave me a few tips and tricks with honest opinions to help me out. If it were just for helis, I'd give this place a 2 star rating, but since its not mainly a plane hobby shop, that'd be unfair... so here's a three. Just know that helicopter options here are limited before coming, otherwise, if you're looking for trains you'll probably be a happy camper. read more
