Where to begin. We visited Kansas City as part of our attempt to visit every state in the US. When looking for the best BBQ in Topeka this popped up first and foremost, and for a good reason. Holy cow. I believe I had some mild authority in saying this because we tried 5 different BBQ joints while in town -- this was hands down the best. Lonnie's is off the beaten path. We actually got to meet him while we were there, as well as Darren who acquired the business in January. We got a sandwich combo to split which included pulled pork, baked beans, and coleslaw. Upon ordering we were immediately questioned for not ordering the cheesy potatoes because it's what they are known for. Darren, who was serving us insisted we try a sample so that we knew how good they were. The potatoes delivered -- very garlicky and a bit tangy. The other people behind the counter were equally as lovely, explaining their sauce selection and just truly being so KIND. Throughout our experience several people took the time to check on our table or refill our beverage. The service was out of this world. Once we sat down, Darren brought over a sample of their smoked turkey as well. It was so moist and had fantastic flavor. It's definitely not a meat to shy away from. As far as what we actually ordered. The pork was tender and melted in your mouth. The coleslaw was refreshing and well-balanced. And the BEANS were the best I had while in KS/MO. Lonnie came over to share with us a few other BBQ places to try and had high praise for someone else's beans but his were superb (I know because I tried both). Sauces were sweet, mild, and hot. All were good but my favorite was the sweet BBQ. At the end of our meal Darren brought out mini pineapple cream pies. The establishment is testing out potential desserts so they were handing them out for free to patrons to give feedback. Simply, they slapped. Very mild but definitive pineapple flavor but so light and delicious. I'd purchase it for sure. The restaurant was clean, as well as the restrooms. Plenty of tables and the staff definitely paid attention to turn over to clean. Lots of parking. And a really cool pig out front. All in all 10/10. Thank you to Lonnie's!! **hoping i heard "darren's" name correctly hah read more

We were on a cross country road trip and stopped by Lonnie Qs for some Midwest famous BbQ. SO glad we did! Amazing food, super welcoming staff (and Lonnie himself made us right at home). Even gave my pup a little sample of turkey. Our favorites were the turkey and cheesy taters. Mouthwatering. Thank you Lonnie and everyone there! Crazy good and only open a few hours per week. Get there early and anticipate a great meal. Lonnie says "If you don't like your BBQ today, don't come back tomorrow because it will be exactly the same." In my experience, Lonnie Q's won't disappoint! read more

Great food and great service! This place is truly a hidden gem. It's hidden off the beaten path, but it's so worth eating here! It's located right in front of an RV Park, tucked away from the hustle and bustle in a new building. Directly across from the driveway entrance is nothing but open fields. The BBQ is absolutely great! Prices are within reason especially compared to the portions you receive. I ordered the combination plate with 2 sides and had the turkey along with the brisket. For my 2 sides I had the beans and cheesy potatoes, which both were super delicious! I highly recommend this diamond in the rough! read more

Lonnie Q's BBQ - Combo plate (turkey and brisket) with cheesy potatoes and baked beans! Yummy!! - Barbeque Near Me - Topeka, Kansas

If you are looking for great bbq then this is the place. Brisket, Pork and Turkey all on point. I got the QBowl with Turkey, Pulled Pork and Brisket over cheesy potatoes and baked beans. Amazing! The Smoked Turkey blew me away. They have limited hours and run out often so plan ahead and get there early! Well worth the trip. read more

Take out only right now - Meats still OUTSTANDING. Had a slab of ribs, briskett and a pork sandwich with beans, slaw and chessy potatoes. Oh so good. Can't wait to sit down to eat again. Coke products and tea. Lonnie knows how to make great BBQ. Ribs are only avail on Thursday and Friday till he runs out! read more

Great BBQ. The only reason I gave it a four is because of their few days open and the problem of driving clear out there and they are out of items. They tell you that they only do a certain amount and when it is gone, that's it and will be until another day. read more

This was hands down I think the best bbq I've ever had! The food was delicious! The staff was great- we Mentioned it was our first time and they explained everything! I was highly impressed! Will be back for sure!! read more

Excellent pork, brisket and turkey! Liked the cold slaw too. Not a fan of the beans tho.

The best BBQ I have ever been to. Lon was so gracious and the food was so good. I highly recommend this place to anyone going through here. I definitely will be coming back the next time I am in the area! read more

Cup of heaven is what I had and it sure was heavenly. Lonnie Q's did not disappoint one bit. I thought it was strange that they are only open 11am-1pm daily, but now it makes sense. When they run out they run out! I'm told sometimes they don't even make it until 1pm! The ordering system is likened to a school cafeteria; stand in line, place your order and take it to your seat. There are plenty of tables and the place is extremely clean. Aside from the food, which I'll get to, what impressed me most was the hospitality. The employees here are slammed and yet they are super friendly and helpful. I thought that the girl serving the food was going to be annoyed when I asked if if the food was gluten free but she proudly informed me everything but the cheesy taters were safe. She was extremely nice and even double checked with the cook about their sauces. The man I believe is Lonnie himself walks around cleaning tables and asking you how your food is, now that is customer service! Now let's get to the meat of this review, literally. Vegans, sorry not for you! The meat is the star of the show here, and you have 3 choices: brisket, pulled pork or smoked turkey. Also, ribs are available Thursday's and Fridays only. But if you're like me and indecisive or want them all then get the QT cup of heaven, it has a little of all three. And when I say little I mean, enough to put you in a food coma afterwards! These three delicious BBQ'd meats are served atop of cheesy taters and baked beans. I omitted the potatoes due to my gluten allergy but the baked beans were exceptional, this coming from a girl who hates baked beans. The sauces were good but really you didn't even need them because the meat was so flavorful and juicy. All around an exceptional meal for a steal at $9.25! read more

As we drove through Topeka we decided to stop at Lonnie Q's because we were craving BBQ; the Yelp app led us straight here. The service was friendly and fast; portion sizes were huge and the BBQ was nothing short of amazing! Tip: If they've got them when you here, be sure to order the cheesy potatoes - they're first rate :-) read more

Great place with Lonnie having great service with each customer. Large brisket sandwich with chessy potatoes was just right. Nice building and lots of photos and moments. read more

I heard this is the best BBQ in Topeka. Being from Kansas City, I had to try it. Lonnie is great. The BBQ not so much. I ordered pulled pork, beef and cheesy potatoes. I also got both sauces. I picked what looked good. The beans did not look appetizing at all. Nor did the turkey. The pulled pork was swimming in a lot of liquid. The beef was pulled as well. This is only the second time in my life I ran into pulled beef. Simply because it should not exist. Beef is sliced off the brisket and should have a red smoke ring around it. Beef can be smoked again and cubed into burnt ends. Pulled? I tried both sauces and kept getting a rancid after taste. I tried them several times with the same result. The only saving Grace was the cheesy potatoes. Delicious. Maybe it's the style of BBQ that is not good. I would search for something better. read more

Wow! We felt so fortunate to find this place as we were just passing through for the night. We got there 5 minutes before the doors opened on a Friday afternoon and there was already a line (We just knew it was going to be good then!) Was hoping to try the ribs but none available that night. So we tried a little bit of the brisket, turkey, and pulled pork (all were very very good. If I had to pick a favorite it was the turkey. My husband would say the brisket and pork.) Also tried the cheesy Tator (you MUST get these!), the 'cold' slaw (very good! Not overly vinegary nor too creamy but still just a lil sweet), and the beans. Portions are massive! You will get at least 2 meals out of each order. Lonnie is a hoot and worth the visit just to meet him. Highly recommend! read more

Exceptional food, Lonnie's is one of our all time favorites. Both the Cup of Heaven and turkey in the slaw check our "boxes".

Delicious barbecue, and always great service from Lonnie and his staff. Definitely recommend trying!

Pretty good bbq but this place has an unusual business model. Lonnie Q's is open only 12 hours per week, 11:00 to 1:00 M-F and 5:30 to 7:30 Friday evening. It seems to be just a two-person operation and a menu limited to ribs, brisket, pork and turkey and choice of four sides. They serve soft drinks only--no beer, wine or cocktails. We arrived about 11:15 and stood in line for 20 minutes before placing our order with Lonnie. We paid at the other end of the counter and found a place to sit. The place is clean with nice tables and chairs but there's nothing special about the atmosphere. Our food was hot, flavorful and reasonably priced but the rave reviews are a little perplexing. read more

Love the brisket, pork and turkey! The cheesy taters, baked beans and cold slaw are great too as sides. Nice that they have the option to order online. Very easy and convenient. Lonnie Q's BBQ is amazing! read more

Great food and awesome service! My favorite is the pulled pork and cheesy potatoes. Hidden gem, best bbq in Topeka!

Passed the place at first but then saw the smoker in the back and knew we were at the right spot. Lonnie is a legend. Great guy who showed us the most amazing hospitality sharing with us the history of Kansas BBQ and other amazing spot in KC. We got the BBQ pulled pork with all the sides. Affordable and delicious. Recommend getting there with time to spare before closing bc he sells out quick (like many of the good BBQ places in Kansas)! read more

Best BBQ and best service in town!! Can't get enough of those cheesy potatoes. This is definitely a family favorite.

This is one of the best spots in Topeka. Locally owned, they make you feel like friends or family as soon as you walk in. Great atmosphere. Not to mention some of the best barbecue ever. I highly recommend their brisket, cheesy potatoes & cold slaw! It's so important to support local right now but these guys make it easy. Don't sleep on this place!! read more

The barbecue sauce was quite watery. The person who had recommended this place to me said that the sauce had changed since she'd last eaten there. The service was fast and efficient, which I appreciated. However, that was really the only highlight. The pulled pork and beef was decent but nothing to rave about. read more

FABULOUS. Not just the food but Lonnie himself, super friendly and he made a connection to MN, my home state! We enjoyed brisket, turkey, beans, coleslaw and ribs. The potatoes were out but I hear they are a must. Come hungry, 1 serving of meat is a 1/2 pound. Would definitely recommend! (Masks are required and it's takeout only) read more

Lonnie Q's BBQ - two trays of food - Barbeque Near Me - Topeka, Kansas

Love Lonnie Q's, best bbq in Topeka. My wife and I go there every chance we get. Love the brisket.

The two hour wait is enough for me to rate this place one star. They are open from 5:30-7:30. I arrived at 5:30 and was not served until 7:30. By the time I was served, there was no pork and no brisket left. No turkey either. The fact that they don't have most of the items that they advertised on their menu is an absolute misrepresentation. I left without eating after two hours. It seems like the owner is too cheap to have enough staff and workers to serve everyone. What a waste of my time. read more

I discovered Lonnie Q's while working in Topeka and have fallen in love with the hearty portions and quick service that it offers over the lunch hour. The hours are extremely limited (only opened Monday through Friday during lunch, and Friday for dinner) so visiting over lunch is a must. I would recommend arriving right after 11:00 am because it is a popular place and the later you wait, the more likely it is that the line will be extended into the parking lot. My favorite meal on the menu is the Real Pork and Beans Q-Cup with a side of coleslaw -- and it is HUGE! My friends are obsessed with the cheesy potatoes and usually get the "Cup of Heaven" which includes all the meats (turkey, pulled pork, and brisket) along with the cheesy potatoes and baked beans. Whatever you choose, I promise you will not leave disappointed OR hungry!! read more

Lonnie Q's BBQ - Real Pork and Beans Q-Cup with a side of "Cold Slaw" - Barbeque Near Me - Topeka, Kansas

Great find on our drive across the country! Lonnie was so nice and his food is delicious! Loved the brisket and potato casserole - yum!!!!

As a born and bred Texan, I naturally take up that Texas pride of knowing good BBQ. The pork was excellent and nearly melts in your mouth. The Turkey is definitely great as well and has a unique flavor. The brisket is slow cooked to perfection and crumbles to pieces which is a sign that it's been slow cooked just right. Don't even get me started on the cheesey potatoes. If the good food isn't enough to bring you in, the owner, Lonnie, is very friendly and a great guy. read more

I now have a love/hate relationship with Lonnie's BBQ on the outskirts of Topeka Kansas approximately one mile south of I-70 not too far past the first toll booth entering Topeka. This all relates to the strangest hours of operation I've ever seen with a restaurant not operating out of a food truck. Let's preface this entire review with posting the stated hours of operation: Monday-Friday 11am to 1pm Friday open for dinner 5:30 to 7:30pm Saturday & Sunday......CLOSED! Don't ask because I'm yet to get a clear answer from anyone in the know. Most of the reviews rave and rant about Lonnies BBQ. Some have went so far as to claim Lonnies the best anywhere, including Kansas City. Um, not quite. I will say that any type of BBQ west of Wyandotte County in Kansas City is absolute garbage. Yes, this includes Lawrence, Topeka (besides Lonnies), Manhattan, Salina, Junction City, Hays, and all the way to Denver. Lonnie's menu is the smallest I've ever seen first hand. Literally 3 meats: Brisket, Pork, and Turkey. Pork ribs are served Thursday & Friday only. Sides: Cheesy Taters (basically cheesy hash brown type concoction), beans, and "cold slaw". There are "BBQ Bowls", which consist of three meats and a side placed inside a styrofoam bowl. No french fries, no regular slices of bread, no burnt ends, no ham, no sausage, and not many other traditional BBQ items. On the two occasions we visited, I have tried EVERY single menu item Lonnies offers. The combo plate is the best deal. Meat and 2 sides. Lonnie himself serves up the food and a young lady rings you up. Those are the only two employees I have seen. Lonnie runs a tight ship as I'm not surprised considering his hours of operation. Portions are decent and you will not leave hungry. Pickles and jalapeno peppers are offered with every item. The bun that Lonnies serves is quite unique. Hard to explain as it is quite dense and large. The bun alone settles in your stomach and quickly begin to fill you up. Prices are spot on and actually a decent deal. The meats are moist and tender. Brisket was a tad chewy but nothing major.Very good smoke flavor. Turkey is turkey and it was rather moist and tasty. The cold slaw was excellent. Very crunchy and light dressing. The beans were ok but I'm not a huge fan of vinegar based beans. The cheesy potatoes were different and very very good. Typical Coca Cola soda machine. No strawberry. Wish Lonnies had sweet tea but they do have unsweetened fresh brewed tea. Lines were long and consistent for the entire two hours. Moved at a good click and no complaints there. The building itself is beautiful and extremely clean. Yes, it's sit in a peculiar location. The building is at the entrance of an RV park and sits next door to a concrete contractor business. Everything is pristine and well maintained. I have a feeling Lonnie himself owns the land, RV Park, and construction business next door. This may explain why Lonnies BBQ is merely a stop-gap between the true money makers located on the property. Hey, I can't fault the guy too much. He appears to be a shrewd business man that loves BBQ and has taken his hobby to make a little cash on the side. Where would I rank Lonnies BBQ with the masterpieces of Kansas City BBQ?.............I would have to strongly consider putting Lonnies BBQ in the Top 10 of all KC BBQ joints. Heck, if he expanded his hours a little more, he may even crack the top 5-7. Lonnies way of doing things in Topeka works as most of these people have no idea what to compare Lonnies BBQ to. I'm telling you with 100% certainty, that folks in KC wouldn't stand for his hours of operation in that region. No way, no how. In the end, Lonnies BBQ offers a superb product and look forward to eating at Lonnies in the future. read more

First priority if you want to eat here is get here EARLY. When I say early I mean before they open because you will stand in line waiting with 10-30 people even when u are early. The options are small but all are good. This place is only open for lunch and Friday dinner. We had a full slap of baby back ribs. The meat fell off the bone and had good flavor. Also had a brisket sandwich with 2 sides. The amount of brisket that you get is insane. The amount can easily make 2 sandwiches,..but from other sources that is what Lonnies hangs his hat on...portion and flavorful meats. The platters also comes with 2 pickle spears. We had cheesy taters and baked beans. Must get side is the cheesy taters. Again the portion size is huge. The beans were good, could taste the spices and all the home made goodness. I wasn't a fan of BBQ sauces. They offer a mild original and a hot. They had ok flavor however very runny..we are use to thick BBQ sauce that hangs on the meat. This sauce was more marinate type. read more

Hours are short but for a good reason. The food is amazing, but when it's gone, it's gone. The servings are huge and the price of a meal is very good because it actually makes for a couple of meals. We'll worth the visit read more

Downright delicious Q. Definitely the best turkey I've ever tasted, with the pork up there with the best. The beef was also excellent, particularly with some of Lonnie's own hot bbq sauce. Zero negatives. Just deal with the hours, lack of beer and enjoy the quality of the food. read more

Best BBQ in town. They are always so busy! Make sure you get there before the lunch rush, or they will be out of a lot of items!!
