They give you a token to allow the entrance gate to open. Within 30 seconds of being in the reserve, I saw a male cardinal and a red wing blackbird. Then I heard mourning doves. Later I saw a squirrel, Monarch butterfly, and a white butterfly. I spied Shortleaf pine trees, too. There are so many colorful wildflowers. If you have limited mobility the Whitmere wildflower garden is a good place to start. The parking lot is loose, small gravel and the path is a mix of packed and small loose gravel. Also the wetlands area has disabled parking and a .75 mile packed gravel trail to the boardwalk. Able-bodied folks have many trails with varying levels of difficulty to hike. Disabled folks can enjoy the view from the paved road and there are a few spots that are disabled accessible to enjoy nature up close. You can see quite a bit from your vehicle, where speed limits are 15 mph. Plan about 90 mins to 2 hours if you are doing the easier walks. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and bug spray.

I chose the cultural experience of going to a small town festival called "Apple Days." This is an…read moreall day event where people from around town go to the Sander's house on Turkey Run Road in Saint Clair, Missouri. The town of Saint Clair is around 2,000 people that have all lived there their whole lives. There is one gas station, one grocery store, one coffee shop, and one school. My whole family lives within a mile of each other in this town, and we have all grown up there on properties that are passed down from generations. Whatever event happens here, everyone knows about it. Apple Days is a tradition that everyone comes out to the Sander's every year for. This is an experience from dawn to dusk that takes days to prepare and set up for. Apple Days is a day of appreciation for all the old, traditional ways of American farmers and workers. Everyone dresses up to be set in an American time period as old as the 1800s. There are different areas of the Sander's property for different traditional ways of life. There is a pie baking station, with an old oven and wood or stainless steel baking tools on a wooden counter. You have to grind up your own flour and go collect your own eggs from the chicken coop. There is a station for old-fashioned stew, where a big pot of freshly grown and cut vegetables are being cooked over a big fire. There are areas with old wooden toys for the kids to play on, and you're transported around the farm on a tractor from the 1930s. But most important of all, there are the apples. A homestead American apple grinder made out of wood and iron is placed in the middle of the farm and is surrounded by a giant bucket of apples from the orchard. The most popular experience is the apple cider, fermented into fresh juice and able to drink straight from the apple grinder. There's not only many variety of apples that are celebrated during this event, but many forms of American culture in past generations as well. All the people in Saint Clair who join the Sanders on their farm for Apple Days are being reminded that the old ways are the good ways. They prefer to grow, grind, and cook their apples into jam instead of going to the store and buying it. Although it takes time and effort, the traditional ways are special and should be passed down to generations so they are never forgotten. Apple Days is a rememberable cultural experience that brings American homestead back to life.

Lots of seating room and umbrellas. They have a stage for live performances which was a really nice touch to the experience. They have one room for tastings inside and another for food and purchases of drinks and wine. If you go on the weekend, they sell bottle only so keep that in mind! My SIL and I split a bottle of the equivalent of a Sauvignon blanc. It was a nice and refreshing. My brother got a beer from a hyperlocal micro brewery which is always awesome. For food we split the pretzels and pork nachos. The pretzel looked like a load of bread. It was delicious. The nachos were super good pulled pork! The nacho cheese is your standard cheese sauce you find at a concession stand, but I never met a cheese I didn't like. We sat on the covered patio, and there were lots of tables available. They also have an event space which would be great for a shower or any other kind of get together! The vineyards and super pretty, and there's plenty of parking. Staff were personable and helpful. Robller is located about 12 minutes west of Washington; you turn south off the highway when you can see the New Haven water tower. Robller is possibly the finest winery in Missouri; all grapes are grown and aged on-site; they are effectively organic, though they are not investing the funding to get the official "organic" certification. Late this summer we had a chance to visit in person, to spend a relaxing afternoon there; something I can't remember delayed us, so we would have less than an hour in our visit; I was wishing I had managed our day better. My wonderful wife kept cheerful... soon we pulled into the Washington Schnucks... walking out with some ham from the deli and some newly-discovered gluten-free (GF) crackers... Blue Diamond's cheddar cheese flavored Nut-Thins... rice cracker snacks with almonds... and then we were pulling and walking into Robller. We ended up just standing at the one station at the bar, enjoying sips of multiple wines, enjoying ham and cheddar cheese nut-thin crackers, having a great time and smiling ear to ear. We learned of Robller Winery a few years ago from Dogwood Liquors (formerly Lukas Liquor). The wine we had was then was incredibly good. We've wanted to go there since then but life just didn't offer enough opportunities. Finally we got to go this fourth of July weekend, to celebrate my wonderful wife's birthday. WOW! I talked with Jerry on the phone earlier in the week to confirm times they were and were not open the holiday weekend. Jerry also gave us a good recommendation on BBQ to get on the drive in (Hazel's Front Porch in Washington, right off Hw 100 on Jefferson. The brisket pairs really well with anything, including the Norton we enjoyed at Robller. The drive off Highway 100 is on a gravel road through a hill or two, ending at the winery, which sits atop a rolling hillside typical of the Missouri River region. Robller has its vines growing on the hills surrounding the winery building. Jerry helped us pick their Norton to have with lunch, and he visited and talked with us, and the other guests (all well separated on the shaded patio. We learned how Jerry / Robller ages the grapes longer than typical, which helps longer-chained tannins grow... those are apparently smoother than the shorter-chained tannins found in many other wines, and this longer aging is what helps Robller Wines be as wonderfully smooth as they are. Jerry also introduced us to the cheese curds they offer from nearby M & T Farms in Owensville... they have nationally ranked cows. I only like cheese on pizza, and brie... and i really liked these cheese curds... they are good on their own and they pair very well with the wine. Thanks to Jerry, we have several wines to enjoy... Norton, Norton blends, Chamborcin, and a special Chamborcin he shared just because it's my wonderful wife's birthday. We enjoyed that Chambourcin with dinner later in the week and it was fantastic, too. Thank you, Jerry!!! Thank you, Jerry, for helping provide a wonderful birthday date afternoon for us! The first of three wineries during our tour of the Missouri wine country, the Balducci Vineyards…read morewas a great place to first try out Missouri wine varieties. The four of us shared two wine flights (3 wines each), with Chairetto, Norton, and Time Signature being our choices. The history of Balducci Vineyards traces its roots to Louis Balducci, who after immigrating to the U.S. in 1906, worked in the vineyards of California to learn the art of winemaking. After WWII, he established the Balducci Wine Company in 1946. Later in 1987, his son bought land in Augusta, MO, and began formal wine production in 2001. In 2021, the vineyards was purchased by the Hoffman Family of Companies (who also owns many other vineyards in the Augusta, MO area). Wine making operations is now handled by the 3rd generation of Balducci's.
