Long Road Home Rescue and Debbie care about the dogs and that's what really attracted me to them. I became a foster for Debbie 8 years ago and I have never had a bad experience and our adoptions always have gone really well. We have become long term fosters as volunteers because we are inspired by her dedication to all these dogs that would otherwise be put down. We always want to be a part of her mission. We have adopted 2 dogs from her and it was the best decision! It's shocking to see these reviews because it sounds like these people are more invested in their own emotional needs than what is right for the dog. I was hesitant to write a negative review at first, but after seeing so many others' bad experiences with this company I was almost relieved that we weren't the only ones. Deb is rude, unprofessional, a poor communicator, and frankly a liar. The first half of our foster-to-adopt experience went smoothly, and we didn't have many complaints at all. Deb told us that we would have 2 weeks as fosters before deciding whether to adopt or not. We quickly noticed that the dog had severe separation anxiety so we reached out to Deb to make her aware of the situation, hoping that she may have some helpful tips. Everyone in our family works full time so we made Deb aware that if the separation anxiety continued, this may be a problem for us, but we expressed that we were working very hard with the dog to overcome this. Deb completely misinterpreted what we were saying and told us that we were expecting too much too soon, that she would find a different home, and pretty much immediately posted the dog as available online. This was only a couple days into the "2 week" agreement. We asked multiple times to speak with her on a phone call to clear things up since she was misinterpreting the texts, and she basically said that she is tired of dealing with us and completely ignored the requests to speak on the phone. The next day she very flatly and rudely texted a message that we need to drop the dog off at the airport that weekend. Okay... well what are we supposed to do now? We were only fostering... at the end of the day it is up to her what she does with her dog. We unfortunately had no say in the situation. The whole experience was very upsetting. Deb was continuously unprofessional and really just rude. When we told her that we were never made aware of the separation anxiety (even though we asked before the dog came) she essentially called us liars. When we said that we think the dog is a terrier mix she said that we "make up stuff". Deb and her people will spoon-feed you information about the dogs, conceal any potential behavioral issues, mislead you, and make you feel like you are the bad guy. She is unprofessional, a gaslighter, and should be ashamed of how she presents herself as a business owner. Our family is devastated by this experience. Maybe after the 2 weeks the dog wouldn't have been a good fit anyway, but now we will never know because Deb stripped us of the opportunity. We miss the dog and wish we got the chance to see if she could be a part of our family. Deb, I'm sure you are doing something right if you are able to find homes for so many dogs, but after reading these reviews it is so clear that you are also doing something very wrong. You say "a very small number of reviews from the 1% does not bother us" but maybe you should take a look at the sixteen 1-star reviews versus the nine 5-star reviews... something is clearly not right. Have some empathy for people who are trying to incorporate a new member of their family and may be struggling or having some anxieties at first. And lose the attitude, it's an ugly look for you. read more

Great non-profit. A lot of folks don't understand that rescue dogs are not like the cute little puppies you get from breeders and raise up into adults. Rescue dogs can be great for a while, then something may have, and then they can be not so great. They may have issues that come up from something that may have happened in their life before being rescued. Then u get some dogs that are just all-around great dogs. Debbie always tries to do what is right for the dogs no matter what anyone else may think....the dogs are always her main concern. She vets them....pays for boarding when she doesn't have fosters...pays for extra medical bills when she deems necessary and even has went to the extent of cutting the adoption fee to nothing on certain cases for certain adopters just because it was in the best interest of the dog NOT the human. I would highly recommend this rescue above others because #1 Debbie doesn't sugar coat the truth from anyone, even if it may cause her to get a bad review. #2...Debbie doesn't promise a dog to be perfect for anyone. Dogs, in general, are a toss-up. Some are no issues, some with issues. #3...Debbie always gives medical records for all her dogs when they are adopted. If the adopter needs more, they can contact the rescue's vet that was used at any time and get the records or even SPEAK to the treating vet. Rescue is a hard job and can be expensive all the time. It isn't a business....if anyone thinks that it is... they are mistaken....very mistaken . It is hard work , a constant headache, a constant money pit that never stops....BUT the one reward from it all is when the dogs she has worked so hard for gets adopted and gets the forever family it so desperately deserves. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY, DEBBIE IS A SCAM ARTIST!!! I am heartbroken that I was naive enough to not look up reviews before finding this place. My experience has been absolutely awful. I found an add on Petfinder for Australian shepherd mix puppies and my husband and I fell in love with one. I reached out to their inquiry email to discuss more information. Debbie called me and we had a 5min preliminary chat and she sent me a few new photos. After our discussion I applied and was confirmed by Debbie herself. She reached back out to tell me she no longer had a contact who can spay the puppy when she gets old enough and couldn't guarantee that the fee would be $100 and would most likely be in the $300 range instead for the spay. This is where I started to be sketched out as she was already asking $800 for the puppy. I should have known better. She reached back out to me today to confirm I was locked into adopting and would be wanting a deposit to transport the pup. I had no text exchange that ever mentioned a deposit and was immediately taken back by that new information. With that she immediately started with the nasty dismissive tone and told me to get off the phone and think about if this is really for me because this is a business and all the other shelters would ask for way more money than she does. I was heartbroken to be spoken to that way and that my dreams of this puppy (whom we already picked out a name and started to shop for) were at an end. The only thing I'm finding comfort in is that I seem to have been able to get out of this scam without giving any money to her. Fantastic experience. Debby called us to say the dog we applied for might not be the best fit with young children, but she had a dog in mind for us; and had me on the phone with the foster mom in N.C. within the hour. Fast forward and we were in a parking lot in Jericho with 8 other families when the transporter arrived. Professional. Well set up vehicle. Nice staff. Everyone was thrilled and ours is an amazing fit. The foster mom sent all the health records and gave us detailed suggestions and tips which have made this first week really easy. I have been looking to adopt a small dog for a little while. I checked Petfinder to see if there were any pups that caught my eye and there was Milo. I contacted Debby who was the person listed on Petfinder to speak to about him. The ad *clearly* indicated that Milo was good with other dogs AND good with children. We had a brief conversation about my past experiences with dogs and she was made aware that I have 2 children, a 5 and 13 year old, and the dog would be a new member of my family. The very next day, I contacted her again to speak more about Milo and to start the adoption process. She took hours to get back to me after I had made a few attempts to contact her. When she finally called back, she made it clear that Milo loves to play-bite and that he may not be a good fit for my 5 year old. I have plenty of experience with Chihuahuas so training/handling them comes natural to me. She did not leave it up to me to decide whether or not I wanted to even start the adoption process. I was left annoyed and confused because, again, the ad did say Milo was good with children and other dogs. After I reassured her that he would be in safe hands with me and my boys, she insisted that I look elsewhere for a pup. I advise anyone looking to adopt from Long Road Home to speak with the manger of the establishment to confirm that the ads they are putting out for these animals are accurate! read more

After reading the heartbreaking reviews from people who had been tricked, I realize that Long Road Home has a years long pattern of deliberately and pathologically misleading potential adopters to believe that they have been approved only to be rejected on the day the pup is to be picked up because suddenly the approved adopter is not a good fit. All reviews have one common thread... Adopter calls Long Road Home about a particular dog, speaks with amd has multiple conversations with Debbie who gives all indication that adopter and application has been approved. Day of adoption a litany of excuses are given, example: dog is not a good fit, we gave the dog to someone else, you are not a good candidate... Thanks for collecting $25.00 application fees for dogs you have no intention of approving. You should be ashamed for getting hopes up and breaking hearts and somehow ignore it. We a family of animal lovers, & already had 2 boys that we rescued a few years ago when we found Ruby with Long Road Home. We knew that she belonged with us. She fit in immediately! She was such a confident girl with great manners, & was so well adjusted just as Debbie had described. All in all, she is a perfect dog. Debbie is a wonderful woman who deeply cares for these animals & all the people that she works with saving them. She was there through every step of the process. She's been such a blessing to work with. She checks in with us to make sure everything is going well & gives incredible advice with behavioral & training issues even with our previous dogs that came from other rescues. It's clear she's been doing this for a long time & has so much experience. She knows so much about animals, their behavior, why they act certain ways, & how to fix any issues. Working with a Long Road Home has opened us to a whole new community of animal lovers, & people that are selflessly saving lives. DO NOT ADOPT FROM LONG ROAD HOME. Read and take seriously all these negative reviews. We were all set to adopt a beautiful German shepherd from them, only for Debbie to suddenly give the dog to another applicant with no warning I applied for a dog through Petfinder immediately after it was posted and then had several phone and text conversations with Debbie, the manager in Long Island, and with a foster mom in North Carolina about adopting the dog. The dog was going for a final checkup with a vet, and they would then bring the dog up to Long Island the following weekend for adoption. It seemed from talking with Debbie that I was first in line to adopt, and she didn't say there was anyone else being considered. Everything looked A-OK at that point, except for one thing: I repeatedly asked for more photos and a video of the dog since we would not see it until the potential adoption day, when he'd be brought up on a truck from the south. But they never sent either - only re-sending the same 3 photos that were already up on Petfinder. How hard is it to take photos or send a video to an adopter who is looking at entering a 10-15 year relationship with an out-of-state animal sight unseen? But we were still interested. The foster texted me late on a Wednesday (4:25 pm) and said the vet had found that the dog had heartworms. I responded that evening with questions and told her I was still interested. Then I told Debbie the same thing - and she gave me the bad news: It was too late! She had already called another adopter to come get the dog that night. This was a shock. I had repeatedly told Debbie and the foster I was very interested and ready to take next steps. We were making plans for picking the dog up that Saturday and taking him out for his first snow! And we had three days left before the dog was being brought up to New York for adoption, so there was no apparent rush. Debbie and the foster never told me there was another applicant they were considering, and they never checked in to confirm that I was still interested. Instead, they just dumped my application without warning when another prospect popped up. This is unethical adoption practice and a lousy way to treat people. Long Road Home may have some lovely dogs, but they have no integrity, and you sadly should not trust anything they say. Steer clear of Long Road Home. read more

My girlfriend and I had inquired about a dog profiled by this rescue group back in August 2015. After effortlessly contacting Debbie, we spoke and I had explained our needs and concerns. We had arranged to meet two dogs on a Saturday shortly after they arrived from South Carolina. The entire experience was easy and pleasant. We agreed to foster one with the intent to adopt , which we ultimately did. Our dog Buddy was very very accurately described by Debbie. He is an amazingly well behaved loving dog that has made a great addition to our family. We picked up Buddy from foster Stephanie who was absolutely great and even bathed him for us. We adopted our dog Mike from Long Road Home in December of 2020 and I can't say enough good things about Debbie and the folks she works with. They are truly angels who give these poor lost souls a new lease on life in loving homes. Debbie screened us thoroughly and provided us with an accurate description of Mike (who LRH temporarily named Romeo) including a medical issue while we were going through the process. She was extremely focused on us being a good fit for Mike and Mike being right for us. This is extremely important when finding homes for dogs who have been abandoned, dumped , or given up on by other people. As all experienced and responsible owners know, dogs get so attached to their humans that it is confusing, anxiety provoking, and heartbreaking for them when they are introduced in to a family only to lose it again. She had him checked out completely as soon as he came to them and immediately started the needed course of treatment for an existing condition before putting him up for adoption. Debbie made sure that we knew there were medical issues and that we followed up with treatment after he came to us and Long Road Home covered the cost as promised fully at a wonderful Vet they work with in Flushing NY. Unfortunately, we don't live that close to that Vet's office so we have been using someone more local recently for all of his other needs and preventative care. My family has wanted to foster a dog for a week or two to see how it would get on with our current dog, Nadia, and then adopt if all went well. I won't go into all of the details, but my mom and I discussed with Debbie that while Nadia loves meeting and playing with other dogs, we were not sure how she would be with another dog living with us, though she has never been violent with another dog. Debbie suggested that maybe a male dog would be better as a second dog, but we assured her that we have experience with pairs of female dogs and we did not think gender was an issue in this case. Anyway, we had submitted our foster application on a Tuesday, and Kelly was supposed to arrive that coming Saturday (today), so I texted Debbie when we had not heard back from her by Thursday and she spoke with my mom that evening. She explained that she had recently had to put her dog down, hence the delay in communication, but seemed to approve our application after speaking at length with my mom; she said she would just have to check with the shelter Kelly was coming from and would get back to us on Friday. Friday came and Debbie called my mom saying we were good to take Kelly and we would get a call when Kelly arrived on Long Island on Saturday. So today I got a call from Nancy, another person working for the rescue, around 1:00 PM saying that Kelly and Baxter had just arrived at her house, which seemed odd, because we had not spoken with Debbie about Baxter, as we had made it clear we wanted a female dog. Nancy said that her neighbor had just had to put a dog to sleep, and when the neighbor saw Kelly, she begged to keep her, and Nancy "just couldn't say no," so the neighbor "adopted her on the spot." She then said that Baxter was still available, and we should contact Debbie if we wanted to arrange a meet-and-greet between him and Nadia. This story sounded super sketchy, and I do not really believe it. I think that Debbie had decided pretty early on that we should not have a second female dog with our current dog, especially since our references never received calls from her, and Nancy was pushing the same "female dogs shouldn't live together" story that Debbie was, even though my mom had already discussed this with Debbie at length, and was trying to push a male dog on us. Perhaps Debbie and Nancy are correct that a male dog would be better for us, and I understand that it is the job of a rescue to put their dogs with the best possible families. But rather than tell my family this directly, Long Road Home dragged this process out over five days and led us to believe that we were going to take Kelly home, up until the day we were going to pick her up. It would have been easier for everyone involved if Debbie had simply told us on Tuesday that she did not think we would be a good fit for Kelly, rather than insulting our intelligence with dishonest stories. This whole situation has been a huge let-down, and I am disappointed at how unprofessionally it was handled. I will not seek to foster or adopt from this organization in the future. Given the number of five-star reviews here, people have obviously had good experiences. So, should you decide to try fostering or adopting with Long Road Home, I would suggest that if Debbie or anyone else with them expresses doubts about your suitability for a particular dog or otherwise appears wishy-washy, cease communication with them to avoid getting the same run-around my family and others have gotten. read more

I found a dog online from this shelter and sent in an application that Tuesday. I got a call later that day from Debbie who interviewed me on the phone and said the dog was in South Carolina and they would be driving him up on Saturday and I could meet him at the transport. Everything sounded great and she called my references. I called her again the next day to confirm the time and location for where I could meet the dog on Saturday. She sounded surprised saying she didn't realize I wanted him...it was VERY bizarre, especially since we spoke the day before and I had told her I would definitely be there on Saturday. She gave me the info and said I'd hear from her on Friday with the final time estimate for when the dogs would arrive. Friday rolled around and when I called her she gave me this round about story about how the transportation had to cancel and she was SO SORRRRRY and that the dog would definitely be coming the next Saturday. She blabbed on and on and I told her I was really disappointed since I had rented a rental car and arranged my entire weekend around adopting the dog but I said, ok, it's just one more week. SO, I waited the week, and kept in touch with her the whole time, confirming every couple of days the dog was coming again that Saturday. All was good to go. I rented another car and planned accordingly. She called me again the day before, to confirm time, however THIS TIME, they had to cancel the transportation AGAIN...due to weather. This to me, was starting to sound fishy and a little ridiculous, but again, I tried to be understanding and she reassured me the dog would just be one day late and be there on Sunday instead. She said she'd call me on Saturday to confirm everything for Sunday and again, was SO SORRY. She called me Saturday confirming everything was ON. The dog would definitely be there on Sunday. Even called twice on Saturday to double check with me. Yes, I would be there. Saturday evening rolled around, again, after I'd rented my 3rd rental car, and she gave me the most bizarre made up story about how the dog couldn't come now because while being groomed it snapped at someone and now the dog was in quarantine. ....... This shelter is a scam and a shame of an organization. If you do anything, do not even bother trying to adopt from this organization. read more

After finding the perfect dog, contacting Debbie, and filling out the application I made the mistake of telling her that I thought a dog, aside from being my best buddy, could help me with depression and a PTSD. her whole demeanor changed and I could tell I was not getting the dog. i felt dehumanized and judged as i had to explain that i am not incapable of caring for a dog. it was just irritating and typical of judgmental, arrogant people with a small amount of power and an ignorance about mental health and dogs. as expected she said she would call me within a few days and she didn't, but i wouldn't want to get a dog from this place anymore. read more

We adopted a beautiful black lab mix from Long Road Home. We named her Sweetie because she is the most loving sweet dogs we've ever seen. Debbie has been extra ordinarily helpful with advice on all sorts of things. We haven't had a dog in a few years and we needed a primer. She always got back to me and was helpful. I'm so impressed with the work that Long Road Home that I have donated several times to them. My entire family loves Sweetie. My 7 year old never had a dog so he was a bit afraid of dogs. But Debbie found the most perfect dog for our family. Sweetie is my sons best friend now. I feel so confident about Long Road Home that when my older son came home with an abandoned dog the first person I called for help was Debbie. And within a week or so Debbie found a foster home and is finding a home for that dog. I highly recommend Long Road Home. And Debbie is of the highest integrity. One of the worst "organizations" I've ever dealt with. Debbie lied to me week after week saying she would be bringing the dog up, that I had been approved for, over and over but then would keep canceling. This happened 4 different times and wasted weeks of my time. I got on Yelp to see if anyone else had had a similar experience and I found numerous complaints from others who had experienced the same thing. I reached out to Debbie to foster a beautiful Shepherd-mix, Roxi, in August 2014. This beautiful pup was being transported from the south after having received life-saving surgery which Long Road Home Rescue funded! Had she not received this surgery, Roxi definitely would not have survived. Debbie arranged for us to pick up a crate, leash, etc. prior to picking up Roxi. Debbie was very responsive to emails, calls, and texts and answered our questions. I had nothing but very POSITIVE experiences with Long Road Home Rescue. All of the dogs I met that were in the care of this rescue were very well-taken care of, healthy, and happy. I have adopted 2 dogs through Long Road Home and would highly recommend this rescue. My first adoption was 'Willy' back in 2013. I adopted him after fostering him for a short time and he is THE PERFECT dog! He actually starts the pet therapy program this sunday. My 2nd adoption was 'Rusty' in Sept 2014. Both of my dogs were completely healthy with paperwork of all their vetting records. I always found Debbie to be very helpful. You can tell she really cares about the dogs and their well being. Their trainer, Ksusha, has also always been there for me with advice and training tips. It's hard to believe that 2 years ago I didn't have any dogs, because I really can't imagine my life without my 2 babies anymore! We were looking for a new dog and had contacted about two rescues but never got a call back. We contacted Long Road Home and after speaking to Debbie we were told she would see I if she had a dog that would be a good fit. Meanwhile we agreed to foster. Needless to say it turned out to be a foster failure. I called her at least ten times in two weeks seeking help from what to feed her to how often should I walk the dog. Debbie always answered immediately and gave us needed advice. We fell in love with the dog and adopted her. The process was fairly easy. We filled out the application and waited for her to check our references. Debbie was anxious about making sure we were a good fit for a young dog that needed exercise and didn't mind living in the city. The process took maybe a week or so. It has turned out to be a wonderful fit for us and we couldn't be happier. Debbie rescued a wonderful dog from a kill shelter and for that we will always be thankful. The impression I had was that Debbie like many rescue groups don't have a lot of help and are constantly juggling multiple calls at one time. The other rescue groups I had contacted eventually returned my calls and basically told me the same thing. So I think with that she's like other rescues. read more

Well we are approaching 1 month since my first conversation with Deb, where she said she would refund us the adoption fee to help with the meds and how she was so sorry that this all happened.. I spoke to her 2 weeks ago and she said she would send me what she can because she doesn't have the money and she was on her way to the bank and will have something in the mail for me that day. Obviously this lady likes giving people the run around and doesn't stick to her word. If she cared about her dogs so much she should have made sure all the kennels they are staying at are getting the dogs "fully vetted" like she claims they all are. Our vet even said "Thank God you adopted him, because without the meds he could have died." And she wanted us to give him back to her?!?! Crazy right? Wish I could adopt all those dogs and get them away from this horrible rescue. She should do whats right, but obviously that's not in her nature. So now I took it to the next step. DO NOT ADOPT FROM HERE! My mom & I adopted Piper (then known as Buttercup) in October 2013 from Debbie. The dog was being fostered in a home in East Norwich with many other dogs. She seemed sweet and loving and we couldn't wait to get her home. We signed the papers and paid the far-greater-than-normal adoption fee. It went downhill after that. The dog had fleas and there were questions about the type of flea & heartworm prevention she had received while in the foster home. We took the dog to a very reputable trainer/behaviorist who said she was an extremely strong-willed dog, but we were willing to work with her. Despite her training and the love and support we were giving her, the dog became more territorial of her space, her bones/toys and even us. On Easter 2014 she bit me and then my mom while she was getting the dog off of my wrist. We were heartbroken and after discussing the situation with our vet and trainer, we gave her up to the town shelter because we knew her issues would not be addressed if she went back to Long Road Home. The town wound up giving her back to Debbie who put the dog back up for adoption with NO MENTION of her bite history. The dog's description even said that she is good with children. I contacted the websites the dog was mentioned on. As of this review she is no longer listed on one site and listed as adopted on another. I never saw a mention of her being adopted on Long Road Home's FB page. I contacted numerous elected officials about the situation with little to no response. I hope anyone looking to adopt will see these reviews and stay away. read more

I am forever grateful to Debbie for helping me find my best friend!! I was searching for a dog for a long time and had many visits to different shelters all over the tri state area. I finally came across Long Road Home and I loved that they transferred dogs from the south up to the north to save them from kill shelters. I made an appointment to visit 3 dogs one day with Debbie all over Long Island. However, Debbie recently transferred a dog from South Carolina and he was on his way to the foster home. Luckily I was able to see him before he went to the foster home. Literally right off the van into Debbie's car he went. I met Debbie and once she opened the door he jumped right on me. It was love at first sight. Debbie not only saved my dog but she changed my life for the better! I have never been happier. I adopted him right on the spot, but I wasn't ready to move him in it, so he spent the first couple of days at his foster moms house. She was amazing as well, even let us keep his favorite bone, which he still chews on today. I've had him for 9 months and they have been the best 9 months ever. Debbie even hooked me up with an amazing trainer who was very fair with his pricing. Thank you Debbie and everyone at Long Road Home. I think it is the best place to adopt a dog. They take such good care of them. We adopted a dog on September she is an angel with my 2 infant grandchildren and the love of our lives. And she loves us also she helped me get over losing my black lab on August. Thanks to long road home. read more

This is the worst place ever the owner Deb Ristau is not a nice person!!! We got a dog from her we have had him for 1 and half years. First off online it says he was a pug beagle mix and he was 3 years old when we resieved him you can see right way he is a pit boxer mix but we fell in love with him and decided to keep him... then after going throw the papers he came with found out he was a year and a half old. after having him for a few months he started eating stuff around my house... it started out small then moved onto bigger things. Right away I reached out for help and was accused of not exercising him enough... lets just say this dog went on walks multiple times a day and was run tired. (Her trainer told me you can never exsost a dog with excersize) I got him cage after cage he busted out of them. Got him a trainer and also hired the trainer she recommended to me (thats 2 trainers) did everything I was told to do. Even put him on meds from tge vet for anxiety. Dog changed for 4 days then went rightback to what he was doing before eating couches windows doors and much more. I called and emailed deb multiple times finally got a call back that she wont take the dog back because her words "we fucked the dog up and refused to have a pack for him"!!!! When I tried to tell her that she dont live in my house so how does she know what we do and that we have done everything both trainers told us to she hung up on me and wont return my calls!!!! What kind of person runs a business like that. She gave me a dog with issues and now wont take him back... they lie about the dogs and then don't stand by the contracts and are all around nasty.... do not deal with these people!!!!! read more

I was so excited when I found the perfect dog at this rescue and was approved for adoption. He was being fostered in Virginia so we had to wait a week for him to arrive. I spoke to the owner Deb and set everything up, all that was left to do was sign the contract. After I e-maled her all week to send it to me she finally did. She never said anything about sending it back ASAP or her giving the dog away. I sent the contract back the NEXT day (less than 24 hours later). The next day I recieved some weird e-mail from her about how she found a new foster for the dog because she thought I wasn't interested. What could have possibly made her think I was uninterested is beyond me!! She gave no warning or even mention of giving the dog to someone else. When I called her to discuss she refused to answer the phone or call me back, so unprofessional! When she finally e-mailed me back she blamed the whole thing on me because I didn't send the contract back right away meanwhile I was never informed that it needed to be sent back the minute I recieved it, in our previous conversation she made it sound like the whole adoption was a done deal. Needless to say we were VERY frustrated and upset. We had spent lots of time and money preparing for a dog that she randomly decided to give to someone else with no explanation given.
