I'm just thankful I no longer live on the Island and don't have to deal with the atrocious traffic, especially during rush hour.

For those wanting to know what happens the first day.....JURY DUTY…read more Easy to find. Plenty of free parking on property. Entrance to courthouse on side of building by road. You go through security, make a right and signs on door display "Jury Room". I went from parking lot to filling out the 2 forms in the jury room in a matter of 5 minutes. From this point it's hurry up and wait. You may be there a full day 9:30 til 4:00, or a half day 9:30 til noon. If you are there a full day, chances are you will be picked for duty.....and may be there for days. They selected enough potential jurors before they got to me so I was let go at noon. Lucky. Out of about 60 people, there were only 6 left who were let go, me being one of them. The remaining take lunch, come back at 2:00 and proceed til 4. Not sure what their fate will be, but I really don't care.

I have done Jury Duty many, many times at the Criminal Courts but this was my first time here .On arrival it's the usual, go through the metal detector, get your belongings scanned, fill out some forms and go sit and wait. The employees are very friendly and helpful and they explain to everyone what the day will entail and we all watch an orientation film which helps the time go by a little faster . There is a small cafe where you can grab a bite and a coffee , it's clean and the girl at the counter is very friendly . They do have WIFi so that helps , you can use your phone and I-Pad .I also brought along a book , but for me it was a little difficult to concentrate with the TV on and people talking .By 10:00 Two groups of people were called to be interviewed with the lawyers and the rest of us continued to wait . The time seemed to go by quickly and at around 12:30 we were all told they had selected all the jurors they needed and we were all free to go. I was expecting to have to endure a long boring day but it was a nice surprise for everyone . So , all in all I had a much better experience than I've had in the past. Civic duty done!

I'm wondering how they intend to re-open the Yellow Book Barn "soon" --- without any books! The…read moreexplanations that the Riverhead Library gave me when I contacted them made no sense whatsoever. In my opinion, they very foolishly severed all ties with the Friends of the Library, who were doing a wonderful job . It was neat and clean, beautifully and efficiently run. And the volunteers were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. It was just a pleasure to go there, and I was happy to donate many books. When I contacted the Library, they assured me several times that they will be reopening the Barn soon. But how do they intend to do that... when I understand the Friends have removed the books and are donating them to other groups. BIG MISTAKE ON THE PART OF THE LIBRARY. What is going on there????

Can you imagine not wanting to come back to your home library?…read more We recently moved here in Riverhead from the city. Riverhead Free Library seemed to be the first place to stop for help but our first encountered with the staff was already awkward. We just let it be. But that was not the worst, my wife and I were excited to be part of the Summer Reading Program since moving here in Riverhead. Some librarians were happy to explain to us what to do. It was all fun until one librarian said to us, "You know you need to read the books in order to put it on your list!" Ouch! My wife and I, who are minorities, felt flabbergasted. We hope they were not Implying that we do not know how to read. And even if this was not their intention, do they really think that we do not know how to follow protocols? Or they were just assuming that we really need to be informed that we have to "read" books in order to be part of Summer Reading Program. Either way, whatever their intentions were, we end up not continuing the program. My wife and I felt insulted with his prejudice. After this experience, we wonder if we can move to another library to get a better customer service from the librarians? As a new resident, this feels very personal.I
