The park is clean and set up perfectly (would love septic hookup) but we've always loved staying here but this extreme noise was a bit much. I felt sorry for the people next to us who had small children. We were here to help a family member who was recovering from an hospital stay and we were very tired. We've not encountered this during any other visits at the park.

The sites are slightly close, but with a lot of green space. The people next to us had several tents set up and one was even placed in our site... some people just don't know proper campground manners and this isn't the first time I'd experienced that. I can't speak on the rates or the booking process, it wasn't my turn for that task. I do know that he booked it through the recreation.gov After check in, there is a sharp left turn into the row of sites. If you're rig is big, don't risk it, just go straight and enter into the site area from the back. Several sites are water front, but not really accessible to the water. The body of water isn't the lake though, it's more of the channel from the dam to Barren River Lake. The boat ramp about midway in the campground, is a great fishing spot, if the dam isn't open. Catfish are the scores, but not when we were there, while there was too much water current from the open dam. It's in the western region of Kentucky, about two and a half hours from Lexington, so I don't recommend it for a short trip from here. Glasgow is the closest larger city and that was about twenty minutes away. If you're a BBQ restaurant lover, Glasgow is your place. We passed so many, I lost count.

You could get just that or use it as one (1!) of your sides for entrees. I had the catfish dinner and it was a lot of catfish. They were cut in strips and the cornmeal breading was just right. The "city" of Smithville isn't exactly a booming place to be... Mostly closed or old buildings - very small, and unless you're camping, I wouldn't stay in the immediate area. But once you get to the lake, it's amazing! The campgrounds are well kept and fairly large. The lake itself winds around, snake-like, with cove after cove to play in or soak up the sun in. You want privacy? You got it! You want wakes? You have that too! The fishing must be outstanding considering the many tournaments they have there. My husband and I live closer to two other lakes, but we drive just over an hour to come to this one. We can't say enough great things about it!

We rented kayaks on Saturday and I was a bit worried about the crowds, but the entire process was quick and easy! We were a group of 4, but even the larger groups I noticed had no problem getting on the shuttle together and finding enough boats for their needs. I've always wanted to stay at a Corp of Engineers campground. There aren't many in Virginia but we…read morewere able to get a reservation at Cages Bend. We wanted to get a spot on the water so we had to book exactly 6 months out. That is when the reservations open. The campground is about 35 minutes outside of Nashville. It sits on Old Hickory Lake which is a decent sized lake for watersports and fishing. There is grocery and shopping near by. We were able to take in the sights in Nashville before they closed down. Camping at Cages Bend allows for social distancing. We did not use the facilities, but they are available as is a dump station. All sites are water and electric only.
