The waiter who served us was, apparently, new, so the other guy had to show him what to do. Nevertheless, the service was polite and he anticipated our needs. The only time when it felt a little strange was while we were waiting for our meals, the other guy stood next to us and stared at the table for a bit. He was waiting for our waiter to come back to tell him to remove our glasses! So we were a little creeped out for a minute there. The food itself was beautiful. We started off with the Punjabi chaat- a potato and fried vegetable dish that is coated with a yoghurt dressing. This was a little different from the usual aloo chaat I have in civic, but still beautiful in its taste I often judge an Indian restaurant by the biryani they make. It is one of the Indian dishes I know well enough that people often get wrong. An Indian Affair didn't disappoint. The biryani was beautiful - juicy sweet chicken pieces, rice that is flavoured and not too dry or wet. The spice was perfect (I asked for added spice). My friend ordered the beef dalcha dish, which I tried a little off. Again, beautifully done juicy beef pieces and the gravy goes really well with the cheesie garlic naan we shared. The only gripe that I had was the price. In comparison to some of the Indian places I have been to in civic, this is a few dollars more expensive and I don't see a reason behind the prices. Finally, the decor itself is old fashion, which I really like. It's cosy and a little on the dark side. If you're intending to hold a big function though, I am not sure if it can hold much more than 40 people. But for our 2 people birthday and catch up dinner, it was lovely.

The owner is regularly at the restaurant and will discuss the meal and his culinary philosophy with the patrons, he is an interesting guy so it works out. This restaurant excels across the spectrum of what is often termed "North Indian Affair", with excellent appetizers (Chaat, Samosas, Pakoras, etc) as well as excellent chicken, lamb, beef, and vegetarian dishes. I think they really perfectedl the Eggplant Baingan, which is an eggplant/potato dish, I don't normally order the vegetarian options in Indian restaurants but it's just so good. The portions for all of the food are neither thrifty nor worthy of the Olympic weightlifting team, but regular-sized. Relative to other indian restaurants, there is comparatively less oil at Indian Affair, one does not find an oil soup at the bottom of the plate when the meal is done, though oil is still used but at a more mild level. "Hotness" level is intermediate, there's definitely an effective kick but it is not ridiculous. As an added plus, the Naan bread is not just fresh most of the time, it's been fresh each of the 10 or 15 times I've been there. I first found out about Indian Affair because a friend from India had recommended it to a (Caucasian, American) friend of mine, who in turn recommended it to me. I've since recommended it to ~10 other people, and there's been consistent unanimous agreement that this a really solid Indian restaurant, at a level which is surprising to find in Canberra. I've been going there once or twice a month for a while, and I'll keep going.

I ordered a $15.90 meal of Vegetarian Burger and chips…read more First of all, my host recommended me their vegetarian burger, and I have to say I like it, pretty much. It has different layer. According to the menu, it composes of smokey eggplant, lettuce, tomato, grilled mushroom, warm haloumi topped with herb mayo and mint yogurt. I am very pleased with this burger to be honest with you, and it is very dimensional. When I take a bite of it, all the flavors come together and blend in together, and give flavor to the initially flavorless ingredients. The bun is pretty nice and not over powering, so when you eat it, you taste a lot of the middle main part and not mouthful of bread. When I eat it, the layers also don't slide around and fall off onto the plate, which is a great thing -- but the sauce and juice does slide off and even with my best ability, a half piece of tomato still slide from the bun onto the plate. (The second time I went there, it is not that salty. So it might be an occasional thing. It is good though. Sorry, I mean GREAT.) Down side of the burger is also that towards the end when I eat it, it becomes more and more salty, maybe from the sauce or the tofu. I am not sure what it is, but it just become more salty and the rich flavors start to fade. I really like the burger when it starts off with the blend of salty and sour-y -- just eat the burger with all the layers and don't leave just a few in the end (like gnawing off the eggplant of the mushroom) so you can remain the balance of the flavors and maybe don't get left off with the saltiness. Then let's talk about the chips chips chips. The chips are in a curly ring form and mostly these kinds of chips will retain a lot of the oil and be able to remain its crispiness. In my opinion. Sooooo. These chips are great, not too salty and also crispy, still remaining its slight elasticity from being a potato, and nice, and doesn't kill your throat afterwards. I love them. Conclusion: Lovely burger, but the saltiness in the end is a bit over powering that I cannot give a 5 star, and lovely chips. It is really nice, to be honest with you. Opinions on price: $15.90 is pretty expensive to some degree, but it is worth it. Just don't use all your money on it. That's all. Because you might get addicted. Really.
