One of the best chicken dishes I've had! Driven twice from LA to TJ just for the chicken.

Little Italy

I never realized this place was here walking around little Italy until I attended a bachelorette…read moreparty here. It's located on the 2nd floor right off the main strip of little Italy. The space isn't huge but it was able to accommodate our group of 6. It has some outdoor patio space as well. We mostly were there for just drinks which were all delicious and pretty reasonably priced around $17 for their specialty options. We also got a couple orders of coconut shrimp. Came with 5 per order. They were large and delicious! Service was fast and friendly. Vibes were great.

Can I give this place 10 stars?!…read more We were a group of six celebrating my bachelorette weekend in San Diego and were heading to brunch across the street from Cocomaya--but we were completely lost. Someone noticed and kindly asked where we were trying to go. He mentioned he was a cook at Coco Maya and suggested we check it out, and although we hesitated at first, we decided why not, even though it looked busy. When we walked over, we figured, why not give it a try? And honestly, we got so lucky--there was a table available for all six of us! But that was just the beginning. The service, the food, the drinks, everything was incredible. The views and ambiance were beautiful, the music was great, and the entire experience exceeded our expectations. Our server was amazing, and everything came together perfectly. We even got the chance to thank the cook who pointed us in the right direction, so grateful he did! I will definitely be back. This place made my bachelorette weekend even more special, and I can't wait to come back again!!

Was in Oceanside for a family wedding and then headed to Chula Vista before flying home to buy some…read moremochi from a little shop I Love. We were trying to figure out where to eat lunch and this place popped up. We got a Cuban sandwich to split and a tamal. There's not really seating inside but there are tables outside. The woman at the front counter is very friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious my friend isn't much of a tamal person so I enjoyed that on my own I loved the lime garlic sauce that came with it so much I was putting it on my half of the delicious sandwich. The sandwich was crispy on the outside everything you expect from a Cuban sandwich and came with a lovely cilantro aioli. The women asked if it was our first time and then gifted us dessert a delicious flakey guava pastry. They have a larger catering menu as well we saw someone picking up a tray to go. Definitely will be back when I'm on a Mochi run when I'm San Diego.

Portos is my Roman Empire and I LOVE potato balls so much, so it was a bummer coming to SD where…read morethere are no Portos. I had been hearing good things about The House of Cuban Flavor for a while, but it was just out of the way for me. I finally got the chance to go recently, and overall had some tasty Cuban food! The House of Cuban Flavor is located in a shopping plaza, so there is plenty of parking, I came in the mid afternoon and there were people eating, but no wait. The shop is simple and nostalgically stuffy, no AC, just two frantically spinning overhead fans. Think your grandmother's house, or your favorite childhood local spot. The walls are colorful, there's a simple menu on the wall, and there's a display case full of pastries. The woman working at the counter was friendly and had my order out in a jiffy. I ordered a spicy chicken empenada ($2.35), a spicy chicken potato ball, and a beef potato ball ($2.35 each). The empanada was chilling in the display case, but the potato ball were freshly fried, and I could feel the heat emanating off of them when I was handed my bag of goodies. The spicy chicken filling was the same between the empanada and the potato ball, and I liked it! It was flavorful and savory. The beef filling was nice too, but a bit too salty for me. The pastry enveloping the empanada was flaky, but definitely needed a reheat. The outsides of the potato balls were perfectly crispy, but the mashed potato layer inside was just a tad too thick and dry, which reminded me a bit of boiled egg yolk. In a direct comparison with Portos, I would say that Portos just edges out House of Cuban Flavor in terms of both price (Portos potato balls are $1.55 each) and flavor. However, these are the best potato balls I have had in San Diego, and they are still really good. Though this restaurant is out of the way, I will be sure to come back to try some of their plates next time I am in Chula Vista.
