Follow the signs and go upstairs for Caribbean Pleasure.  I ordered a passion fruit juice to start.  Sweet with a bold passion fruit flavor.  Very good.  For my entree I ordered oxtail with white rice.  Rice was moist and I loved the mild flavor.  Oxtail was tender and full of rich flavors.  I was sad the oxtails were very small and there were not that many.  Wish they had a double meat option. Owner was very friendly and provided excellent service. 2nd visit I showed up at 11:10am and the door was padlocked.  Nobody answered the phone.  Better call first before driving over as they don't stick with the posted hours. 3rd visit I showed up at 11:20am and the door was padlocked.  It's likely they open at 12pm on weekdays.

Legume (Vegetable stew w/ beef)

I say it again...must try. Food is incredible. They serve oxtail on Sundays which I got to try yesterday and it blew me away. Soooo delicious. The spices, the way it's perfectly cooked & seasoned. Unreal. Loved it so much. We tried the beef patties this time. We both died. If you love buttery flakey pastry....if you love beef or sausage roll pastries or curry puffs, savory pastry or just delicious food in general - must try. My husband said he could eat it everyday lol which I can see. They're that good. Fried plaintains are super delicious. The mixed rice & beans is so good. We've also had the "legume" vegetable stew dish which was amazing. The way the beef was so moist and soft as well as flavorful and seasoned perfectly. The Haitian jerk chicken was also fantastic. The soup joumou says it has beef on the menu but it's actually made vegetarian to suit more dietary preferences and then you can request the beef when ordering if you want it. Diamond in the rough. Food is ridiculously good. The service is so so warm, inviting, kind, friendly. 5 stars all around. Highly highly recommend.

Caribbean Pleasure is located in the Loma Portal neighborhood on a corner opposite a busy automated car wash. I don't believe there was any on-site parking. You have to find a curbside space on a side street if nothing is open on Rosecrans St. Several years ago, there was a Mexican and Pacific Island fusion restaurant that occupied the top floor of this building. Since its departure, there have been several eateries that have attempted to do business here without any sustained success. After walking up the stairs to reach the upper level, I sat at a round table in a booth while there was one other party dining who was family/friends of the owner. It was empty on a weekend afternoon which felt eerie. The one-page menu featured Haitian cuisine in the form of a dozen entrees. Two sandwiches, three sides, and a kids' menu rounded out the food offerings. Some of the entrees were only available on certain days of the week (e.g. Saturday or Sunday). I have eaten this type of food elsewhere in town, but I never encountered the first listed entree which was Haitian Spaghetti served with either sausage or shrimp. The server told me I could adjust the spice level so I asked for the sauce to be mild with sausage as the protein. I also ordered some Plantains as a starter. They came as seven fried pieces along with a mound of spicy slaw. A dipping sauce on the side would have been a nice addition to add more flavor to the starchy fruit. The spaghetti was served on a flat dish with about ten round slices of sausage that was similar to andouille. The sauce was tame as I had asked. If I had to compare this style of spaghetti to what the Filipinos prepare, I would pick the latter because of a sweeter sauce. Maybe sticking with a mainstream item like Jerk Chicken would have been the more prudent choice. The service I received was spotty as the workers would disappear for a while or start chatting with the other seated group. My dining experience at Caribbean Pleasure was between a three and four star level.

My ex is a Jamaican woman. In the divorce settlement, I got to still visit my mom (my ex's mom by birth, but she loves me like her own), and eat from her table whenever I am in Florida....If you ever tasted her cooking you would understand the huge win I walked away with. I have never had Caribbean food that even came close to her cooking.... Until today that is. I had one of my all time favorites... ox tail; and it was spectacular! The rice and peas were spot on .... Took some home in fact. Presentation was simple.... Like my mom's. And just like my mom in Florida, the chef came out and made sure I was happy. I think I now have a mom in San Diego. Taste delivered 5 star! If you want the homemade Caribbean experience... go here! I will be back!

All of the dishes were absolutely delicious. Some of the most flavorful food I've ever had. The people were very nice and very welcoming. I will absolutely be back to try more.

This Haitian restaurant gets 10 stars! I was so happy to find out that San Diego finally has one. Haitian food is the BEST FOOD EVER. And, I'm not just saying this because I'm Haitian American. It's TRUUUE. I've tried other ethnic foods and Haitian food is always on top because of it's authentic epis (spices) that makes the food oh so flavorful coupled with pikliz (cabbage w/ hot peppers) to give you a good kick. If you haven't had Haitian food, this is your opportunity to try it. Trust me...you won't be disappointed. Bon manje!!

What a pleasant surprise. Decided last night to try a new culture food and this place did not disappoint. Presence felt a bit lonely but it was only 5 on Saturday night. We decided to sit down at the bar and they had sports playing and seemed to have a few local and domestic beers on tab. They had one big speaker up front that echoed into the dinning room at a perfect level. To start off I ordered beef Pattie's and I expected mini steaks and they where pastie like stuffed with ground beef. I ordered a second order because they where just too good. Second starter was their plantains they where on the ok level but my partner enjoyed them. For our main dish we ordered Griot witch is fried pork as I know them carnitas with a side of pikliz (rice and beans) it felt more on the dry side but very delicious. I wished it came with some sort of side like tortillas or bread. Second main dish was legume (beef stew) with rice and beans as well. Very flavorful but not enough beef. Portion of the rice and beans where quite big but everything g else was stunning. First time to try Caribbean food and it did not disappoint.

So when I was deciding between my options today, I went with Island Spice because Jamaicans make good rice and peas, y'all got good jerk chicken, and I wanted my money to go toward a Black establishment. I actively chose to support this restaurant. I will not be coming back. Rice is the star of the show in Caribbean cuisine. We literally go to war on social media over who got the best rice. That is how seriously we take it. And what I received today was mushy. The water ratio was completely off. Whoever made this rice knew it, and they served it anyway. There is already a serious lack of Caribbean culture in San Diego. We barely have options out here. So when one of the few spots we have decides to send out food that does not meet the standard, that hits different. You do not get to be mediocre when you are one of the only ones representing. If the decision was made to serve that rice because redoing it wasn't worth the time, you lost a customer permanently. Standards matter. You had mine and you lost them. Not coming back.

My family is Cuban and we have struggled some to find true authentic Cuban Food recently, but we struck absolute gold with this place. Their drinks are so wonderful - the margaritas, the Havana mojitos & the Old Cuban are top contenders. You really can't go wrong with any drink order though. I definitely have my favorites when it comes to their food items - the vaca frita (#1 oh my gosh I could eat it daily) and the fricase de pollo are so wonderful. The baked empanadas along with anything from their bakery section is going to be a win as well. Whatever you order just ask for more mojo! Make sure before you leave you get a Cuban coffee to end the meal paired with a slice of flan!

It took a while to be served the empanadas at the 'bakery' counter and right before we paid, the server went to serve someone at the outside walk-up window. Uh, hello...?! We sat at at the bar where the service as well as the empanadas were luke warm. The bar tender was wearing one earphone and obviously taking a phone call while 'working'. It was difficult to get her attention between her prepping limes, her phone call and her disappearing every so often. We could have easily walked out and not paid for our drink, but we were honest. She didn't get a tip. She also needs to learn to cut limes more efficiently. We wouldn't rush back.

In the past, I've had some really great meals and experiences there, which is why this review is difficult to write. Unfortunately, during my most recent visit to the Clairemont Mesa location, the food quality was noticeably different from what I remembered. Several items tasted stale, cold, and as though they had been reheated. The beans were mushy and lacked flavor, and the plantains seemed old and not freshly prepared. Overall, the meal felt below the standard I had experienced there before. I'm sharing this not to criticize harshly, but because I genuinely remember this restaurant being much better and I hope they can return to the quality and freshness that made the place special in the past. I truly want to see them succeed and improve because there is a lot of potential there.

As a Colombian who has been craving authentic Colombian cuisine since my last visit to New York in…read moreDecember, I can confidently say this restaurant truly satisfied those cravings. Being nearly eight months pregnant, my expectations were especially high, and it is rare to find a place that meets them so well. From the seasoning of the food to the warm and attentive service, everything about this restaurant stands out. Although I don't recall my server's name, he was incredibly kind and provided excellent service throughout. The ambiance is also worth noting--the space is large, offers plenty of seating options, and even features a large TV, making it a great spot to relax or watch sports. To start, I ordered a watered mango juice along with a beef empanada. The empanada exceeded my expectations--despite being on the smaller side, it was packed with flavor. I enjoyed it so much that I ordered five more to go, which speaks for itself. They were served with fresh ají, a traditional sauce that complemented them perfectly. For my main course, I had the carne asada plate, which included steak, rice, beans, sweet plantains, avocado, tomato slices, and a small arepa. Every component of the dish was well-executed--the beans were flavorful, the meat was well-seasoned, and the overall plate felt authentic. It is often difficult to find truly authentic Colombian food, especially in San Diego, where options are limited or not genuinely Colombian. This restaurant, however, delivers on authenticity and flavor. The portion size was generous, and I ended up taking leftovers home to enjoy later. In addition to the empanadas (two chicken and three beef), I also ordered a buñuelo and a cheese arepa to go. Unfortunately, these items did not meet the same standard. The arepa lacked flavor and was overly greasy, and the buñuelo was dry and similarly oily, even after absorbing excess grease from the bag. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for Colombian food, especially given how rare it is to find quality options in this area. Friends of mine visited recently as well and thoroughly enjoyed their bandeja paisa, further confirming the consistency of the food. I will definitely be returning--especially for those empanadas.
