It's one of those places where you don't really notice till you see the signage for it and wonder where it is. One of these places is Loi Kalo mini park. It is close to my work place and a short walk to Kamehameha shopping center.
My experience here at Loi Kalo mini park is basically related to the game Pokémon Go. I would not have come here and look around, if it wasn't for the game. So glad that I did though. Only thing about Loi Kalo mini park is that it can get shady here, even during the day time. There is a small parking lot in back of the Mexico restaurant, however, some of the spaces here are taken from people who just happen to be hanging around. I've been around here for mostly 30 minutes at a time playing the Pokémon Go game. While Loi Kalo mini park is not as bad as i say, just got to be mindful here, since it can get sketchy here, especially late at night. Best bet would be to come here during the day, particularly morning and noon hours to enrich yourself here at Loi Kalo mini park. There is space for your pets and space to run around, but it is not much. I would be concerned about my safety, in case there are shifty people around the park or in the parking lot at any given time. For the most part though, this park is one of those hidden places that seems more of an afterthought than a real park for most people to come here and enjoy. While this place does have a parking lot for patrons, it's sometimes partially filled up with people with cars who usually chill here too.
It's not the type of park that usually helps me to revitalize myself after a long day of work or a really long work week, but it has its uses, especially with my association to Pokémon Go. It's somewhat clean, but could use some tender loving care wherever possible. Still, if you feel the need to come here, do so at your own risk. My experiences here at Loi Kalo was pretty much centered in the parking lot area, but roamed a little bit beyond that to try to enjoy the area before returning to work if it was during lunch or going to work, if it was before 7:30am. It's always nice to make a stop here before heading to work, to be honest. The calm before the storm, if you know what I mean! I do enjoy the outside ambiance that parks bring, even with it raining or windy at times, the park itself is a small respite from the urban rat race we call life. I do enjoy coming here from time to time, even when the game calls to me, but I usually don't let it get to me that much. For the most part though, having this hidden gem of a park is great for the community and those who use it regularly. Just take caution and care, since there can be people and undesirables who lurk there from time to time looking for opportunities. Loi Kalo mini park itself seemed clean enough, but as mentioned before, could use another thorough cleaning.
Loi Kalo mini park is located in Kalihi off North School Street. It's address is on Loi Kalo Place, near Helena's Hawaiian Food and K&K Kitchen. As with all community parks within the city and county of Honolulu, entrance fees are null and admission is free to the public. Don't know if they do lock up the entrance to the park nightly, but it helps to leave the area at a decent time. As mentioned before, there is a parking lot to park in, but not sure if it belongs to the park or the Mexico restaurant. Either way, it's a parking spot for those who want to eat at the Mexican restaurant and hang out at the park afterwards. It's a win win situation there. If you are like me, routes 2, 2L, and 1L come through the area and stops nearby. Best bet would be to stop off at Kokea Street or Houghtailing Street and walk over. If you are in the area and want to come over, it would be a good idea. Just come during daylight hours and you should be okay. Those are the hours that I would recommend coming, since stuff can happen at night when you least expect it. Just keeping it real. Personal safety is important and you just need to remember that at all times. The overall experience here at Loi Kalo mini park each time I visit is as good as it can get. It is positive, low key, and causal at the same time. For me though, it's a place I can go to eat lunch or breakfast before heading back to the office. Whatever your game, consider coming here to Loi Kalo mini park in kalihi for a nice recharge after a long day at the office.
5.0 stars for the overall experience, but as always be mindful of your surroundings.
