There is a pub in the first floor which is quite nice and the restaurant is in the lowest floor. The bed was very comfortable as was the shower. The room came with a small fan which was nice as it could be a bit loud outside. We slept with the windows open every night which kept the room comfortably cool, albeit it could be loud until about 11pm. Overall, great experience. We would reccomend!

So she came back to the table with my friend's meal a moment later and she asked me what I ordered. I told her the vegan pie. Then they came back a third time with more staff and they told me the bartender said I ordered the burger. Why does this matter? Of course the bartender thinks I ordered what he wrote down. Why would I mistake what I ordered? Did they think I was trying to rip them off because the burger was cheaper or something ( I don't even know if it was), it felt a bit insulting. Then when I finally got my pie, it didn't come with mashed potatoes or fries. I asked the waitresses, isn't this supposed to come with potatoes, and she told me no. On my way out I double checked the menu at the door and indeed it was supposed to come with either mashed potatoes or fires. Made me really angry....oh and how was the pie? It was okay. The crust was slightly undercooked but the inside was decent. Nothing to write home about.

Our Intrepid tour group booked this hotel for us…read more We arrived for our hiking tour group at 1:20pm, and we were told that there would be no rooms until 3pm. Our tour group met at 2pm, so we had to store our luggage in the front. That was fine, until we realized we had to be in our hiking gear at 3pm- my friend and I ended up getting our gear out from the front multiple times, and the lady at the front desk was visibly irritated with us and kept asking us- "are you sure you don't need anything else?" We later found out our friend on the trip DID get her room assigned, and she said she came in at 1:30pm. So why didn't we get a room? Very inconsistent service. After our hike and dinner, we came back and finally checked in (lady at the counter says, something along the lines of "oh yes, the two who needed to get their bags multiple times"). They gave us a room on the first floor... next to the public ladies restroom that only has 1 of 3 working toilets. The room smelled like herbs and damp mold, floors were a sketchy carpet, and the bath had a makeshift window pane to block water. My friend asked them for another room and they stated they were fully booked with absolutely no options in the week. I thought it smelled bad but resolved to stay there rather than try and get another hotel. The reception offered up the only fan in the hotel for us. I woke up in the middle of the night coughing, a minor asthma attack. The next day the front desk asked me how it was...I said I woke up coughing it was so dry. And she said "oh, well I'm glad you found you could stay there." There's a drying room on the first floor but it's very tiny and didn't dry our shoes very well. My friend asked for a hair dryer and the initial response was that they didn't have one in the hotel... but they eventually found and brought one to us. One night we were so exhausted we ate in the hotel... not recommended. Closes at 9, last orders at 845pm. Friends got the pastas and it was.. edible. My cheese sandwich was just standard shredded cheese in bread with lots of uncooked onions. I had to ask them to toast it for me. Another night their chef was out sick so no dinner service. I don't recommend relying on the place to eat. The only redeeming qualities were the open space and views in the back and I really enjoyed the buffet breakfast they served. Recommend getting there at 8am when they put things out, they have hot food (sausage, bacon (ham), fry bread, hash browns, stewed tomatoes, beans, sunny side up eggs, scrambled eggs) and some fruit in water, cereal, yogurt, pastries, and assorted breads with a toaster. Coffee, tea, juices, and water were also available. I have no idea how much this costed extra though. Overall a super mediocre hotel that's about a mile walk from town. And it's not that much cheaper. Recommend elsewhere.

It is a beautiful piece of property in the north Lake District. Driving up, the driveway had lots of awd vehicles with kayaks and dogs. We didn't quite fit that scene but thought it wouldn't matter, ha! I went in while my girls started to roam the property a bit. There was a woman at the desk who started walking away as I approached the check in area, "I'll be with you shortly," Almost immediately, a guy comes out of another door and asks what I needed (pro tip - it's probably a place to stay). I say that the women who went into the other room told me she was going to be right back so I was taken care of. He immediately informed me that she was "on her break" and wouldn't be assisting me (not sure I was supposed to be clairvoyant and know break schedules but OK). I asked him if I could book a room for my family. Without a moments hesitation he told me they were full. I then asked if he could recommend any other places nearby, "no". May I use your WiFi to check (we're only 3000 miles from home and from another country). "You can probably get a signal outside, by your car," in other words, "beat it." Really long story short, we found a lovely place right in downtown Keswick, on the river, an AYA hostel with excellent service and friendly staff!! SO, about staying at Derwentwater, if you're not a kayak paddling dog owner in an AWD vehicle, don't bother.
