We visited Loch Lomond on New Year's Day and can I just say it made for the most magical start to a new year for me. I'm floored by its beauty and tranquility and if its the start of the Highlands, holy cow - or rather coo! My tour group couldn't get over how stunning the light, filtered through clouds touched upon the hillsides. The park was clean and everyone did their part to keep it that way. No one was too noisey either. Would love to come back and explore more!

Loch Lomond Shores is a small shopping complex mainly aimed at tourists so you will find an…read moreoverload of tartan and shortbread on offer here. There's a few stores including; -Jenners -Catherine Kinloch -Misty Glen -Edinburgh Woollen Mill -Thorntons -Julien Graves ...So it's not the kind of place you could go on a shopping spree but it caters for tourists and is a pleasant place to browse. In addition to the shopping centre there's also a Sea Life Centre and if you're looking for some activities then you can hop on the loch for a spot of canoeing or paddle boating. Like Gavin, I find it a little odd that there's a complete lack of place to eat apart from a small cafe attached onto Jenners and a restaurant with the worst looking menu I've ever seen.

Besides restaurants and an aquarium (to which I'll give a pass), they have paddleboats and a "retail crescent." They do offer some legitimate services for exploring the park, such as kayak and mountain-bike rentals. On the upside, the park service has a large visitor center here which serves as a gateway to Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. What I really wanted to do was hike around the vicinity above the lake, since I didn't have time enough in my day to climb Ben Lomond. I got plenty of pamphlets and then got the hell out to drive up the west side of the lake towards Luss.

We opted for a burger for Morgan, and a steak and haggis pie for me, with sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Service was polite, and pretty quick. The only minor complaint we had was when Morgan ordered a whisky that he could clearly see on their bar, they had no clue what he was asking for. The food was phenomenal. The burger was really tasty and cooked well, and the steak and haggis pie...I could eat that every day of my life, it was that good. If you're in the area and looking for a good spot to enjoy some really tasty food, I highly recommend the Loch Lomond Arms. If we find ourselves back in Scotland, I will absolutely eat here again.

There's plenty of tables - but be sure to make a reservation, on weekend it's full. Menu has some really good options on it. And then there are daily specials. Inside it's a nice pub/restaurant. Very comfy and cosy. Our English Bulldog was welcome as well. Then they got a nice selection of drinks at the bar with lots of different and also local whisky. We very much enjoyed the Loch Lomond brand. Here's what we had: Pot of Mussels - very nice and very fresh Cheese plate - nice selection of scottish cheeses Haggis with sides - the BEST haggis I've had so far; fantastic 1/2 dozen Oysters - amazingly great oyster; really a must-order homemade terrine - very enjoyable, but not the best starter on the menu Sunday Roast set menu (once with ham, once with lamb) - quite good, but the meat a bit dry Haggis balls - my favorite starter, could eat these all day every day Cured salmon - sadly not that great Steak Pie - a good choice; hot, crispy and creamy Burger and fries - a very nice, fresh burger; good quality meat Fish'n'Chips - very nicely done, fresh and crispy...and stays crispy to the end All in all they got a really good menu. What's standing out seafood-wise are the amazing oysters and wonderful mussels. Meat-wise it's definitely the delicious Haggis - as a starter or main. Equally great. It may be summer to the Scottish folks, but to this Florida girl, my teeth were chattering. That breeze off the loch was numbingly cold. We walked around for a good bit, reaching the waters edge, to touch the coolness and watch the bots on the waves. It was a peaceful time of day. Not too many folks out yet, but you could tell (it was a holiday weekend) that they'd be out in force soon. Kayaks and boats, water sports equipment is all for hire, this place is absolutely gorgeous.

A lovely place Be…read moreaware: Marker on map is way off (at the time I wrote this at least - Park is at the Balloch Castle in Balloch) We walked around Balloch for a while until we started walking along the Loch. It's a nice, pretty short trail leading along the Loch or through the woods. Shortly after you'll find yourself on a huge lawn in front of the Balloch Castle. There are several trails around this area to choose from. The big lawn is really a paradise for humans and pets as well. Even though it was a lovely summer day it never felt crowded and everybody had enough space to do whatever they liked. A good place to let your doggy run free. It offers lots of nice picnic spots with nice views. The Castle itself was partly under construction at the time. The lakeside right at Balloch feels more crowded, be sure to walk just a wee bit further to this park for more space and more views.

From Greenock Cruise Terminal you only have to take 2 trains: Greenock to Glasgow Central, then transfer to train that goes to Pollokshaws West. Costs about 10 pounds (taxi costs 60). There is a nice, free museum there. Restrooms and cafe are very modern and super clean. There is a tram that takes you around the park, and even stops at the train station. Kids loved this park. Very open and not busy.
