It included a t-bone, 2 short ribs, a chicken breast, a couple of sausages, and plenty of intestines and kidneys. By the time Gayle and I arrived in Downtown Salta (via a flight from Iguazu and airport transfer),…read moreit was the middle time between Lunch and Dinner. Since we hadn't eaten anything since breakfast, a late Lunch was just fine with us. We walked to the Main Square (Plaza 9 de Julio) and found the Madero Resto and Bar. It was a quiet respite, except maybe for the commotion on the other side of the Square, related to Boca's recent win over River. Madero Resto Bar were maybe 30 minutes from shutting down for the afternoon, but we managed to order some basic provisions off the menu, along with wine and a big bottle of Salta Negra beer. The food and service were OK (Cash), and it was pleasant to sit in the shade on a nice Spring day and watch like go by. And just in case you're interested, there's an popular ice cream place next door.

Service was attentive and friendly. Very much worth the journey, and the meal added to our vacation to Salta.

Gayle and I had dinner here during our only evening in Salta. Our Hotel had recommended it, which…read morealso provided a nice opportunity to walk and dine our early (8 PM plus change). The Hotel also recommended across the street (Guemes), but we found the Cafe del Tiempo side to be a little quieter for outdoor seating. We were seated quickly enough outdoors, but found the indoor decor to be pretty cool. However, after a decent wait and agreeing on a "we'll leave in 5 minutes unless we get waited on", our server finally arrived with an odd combination of indifference and a smile. We ordered our Argentinian "usual": Steak order to share provoleta and a bottle of Malbec. But to our dismay, they were out of provoleta (this early?). Maybe we should have explored this diverse menu a little more, as I didn't notice Indian and Asian stir fry selections. Maybe our guy (and the kitchen) were having an off night. We also noticed that the next table ordered Pizza and one of the persons there had to walk back inside. Soon after, the waiter collected the partially eaten Pizza and then returned it after heating it up. As for our outdoor seating, the evening and the city energy was pleasant enough. Our experience also included several folks stopping at our table for money and a few dogs positioning themselves for some scraps. I should point out that these dogs seemed to be well taken care of as maybe community dogs, rather than street mutts. We couldn't say the same for the folks who were down on their luck. The steak and wine were good, but the slow service, lack of provoleta, and the street diversity didn't encourage us to linger. This was also probably the only dining experience in Argentina where we felt the waiter didn't earn the tip and where the Hotel recommendation came up a bit short.
