Excellent produce, cant say this enough, vatiety and freshness are tops. You will find items here that you won't anywhere in Maplewood or S.O., worth the short trip. Meat dept is great too, prices are fantastic. Really great prices One star off for non essential reasons: not the best variety of some items: namely granola bars and a few odd items I need to go elsewhere for (no Fage yogurt) second reason is I would LOVE to see some actual Korean items, chili pastes and maybe a little Kimchi would be nice. If this place had a little H-Mart style offerrings I'd love it. But to be fair, theyre seated in Irvington and are catering to a diverse population and its reflected in the products but not so diverse that Western tastes are excluded. Fantastic store. Gives the local chain markets a run for the money. Come here, eat better for less money.

However, they do not have a lot organic options. If you're looking or a bathroom, there's one but it's not the cleanest and it's all the way at the back of the store where they stick inventory. The cashiers are sometimes friendly but most don't even greet you. Their carts need to be placed back better. Parking available but gets packed on Fridays and Saturdays.

Extra seems to have a big selection of African, Haitian and Hispanic products. They have a great selection of root vegetables. Prices were low, store neat and stocked, but this is where the good ends. The neighborhood is very questionable. I kept seeing police activity everywhere while trying to find this supermarket. The meat was also questionable. I made the mistake of picking up a pork shoulder that looked better than the rest. Smelled it and it seemed fine. Once I got home and removed the packaging, it smelled funky, as if it was going bad and someone tried cleaning it with a chemical. I threw it out. I never shopped in this type of neighborhood before nor in an Extra supermarket. Next time I'll just travel to ShopRite a half mile away for what I need. I'm new to a neighborhood that borders Orange, East Orange and Irvington. I'm finding that the supermarkets are subpar. I need to travel outside of my area for quality meat. For root vegetables and non perishables, I may make the once a year trip here. Maybe.

Its proximity to some bad areas of Newark/Irvington is possibly why they say that poorer depressed areas have poor nutrition. Walk a few more blocks to City grocery which is also pretty ghetto, but has a lot better products and selection and the produce is decent. Anyone who drives would never make this a justifiable place to shop. Better yet, head over to Stop and Shop in South Orange or to the nearest Shop Rite for way better food.

The employees are great.Last week I went shopping at a time when business was slower ; and a cashier named JuJu helped me , and showed me I had points on the receipt. I told her I didn't know how to use them, and I pointed to the machine for Go Points and said, I didn't understand it at all. Since there were no other customers, she very patiently explained how it worked and how to get the app on my phone. Such a kind young woman!! A real sweetheart That's not all .A couple of weeks ago I had a large order and at the checkout I was exhausted.(old lady, back problems) There was the young man, a Stop and Shop employee, in line behind me in line had just a few items and I asked him to go in front of me. t looked to me as though he was on his lunch break and was buying snacks. He smiled, but refused. The checker packed the bags for me ; and this young man kindly offered to put them in my car. I told him I didn't want him to spend his break working; and he said ; Oh no, I'm done today, I'm off the clock . Well then, no, I said. But he offered a third time, and I said ok, yes, thanks. I almost cried he was so kind. I wish I had gotten his name. Thank you, son.
